    Most of the media sold as "aquatic soil" consist of baked clay, in some sort. When (naturally) breaking down, clay will likely pack, in more or less compact way, around your gravel. Your regular siphoning have probaply removed a lot of the "decaying" clay..........but this have not happened...

    As I said : - a matter of taste !! Just check whatever you choose is inert. There are products "out there" (ex. from marble-production), that changes chemistry of your water considerably - which may not be desirable.

    Hi Paul I breed Angels too - and there's absolutely no problems with pH. Might be if wild collected, but I've bred wild collected Peruvian Altum (and yes, I know they're not Altum!) without problems. Mick.
