Struggling to get riccia to cling to mesh

Mine started like that and has grown really well, but above the mesh it's just becoming detached.

Struggling to get riccia to cling to mesh

Thought I'd get away with mesh :(. Guess I'll have to do the ever popular java Moss then! Or maybe fissidens....

Struggling to get riccia to cling to mesh

I'm maturing a large riccia carpet in a low tech tank. The plant is happy as anything, growing at a rapid rate and showing good colour. I'm struggling though with some bits not staying attached to the mesh. I keep it trimmed weekly, so I wouldn't expect there to be issues with it dying off under...

Fissidens fontanus or is it ?

Fine tweezers are a good way to remove the riccia if you don't want it.

Anubias barteri...good news and bad news?

Good spot Tim, missed that entirely. Your other option would be a piece of plant weight around either the rhizome or the roots.

Anubias barteri...good news and bad news?

Almost certainly diatoms then. Don't worry, then will vanish in time, and are entirely harmless. If you want something that will eat the diatoms, and also (in my and many other members' opinion) is an essential inclusion for any planted tank, get some otocinclus in there. They eat algae and...

Anubias barteri...good news and bad news?

You sod! I can get my anubias to throw up leaves like there's no tomorrow, but I've never yet managed to get them to flower! Difficult to tell from the picture, but almost looks like diatoms - is it a new tank? Cory Sterbai in the foreground?

    Hairgrass and amano shrimp

Despite replanting everything, these amano shrimp are still hellbent on digging up all the hairgrass. It's only in fluval stratum at the moment, which is quite light. I'm wondering whether a gravel cap might stop them as it's a bit heavier. Failing that, I'm going to have to give up on hairgrass...

    Hairgrass and amano shrimp

How deep can I plant it George? Some I've only got a tiny bit of substrate over the "crown" as I wasn't sure how they'd cope with having that buried. I've just tried pushing a few in a fair bit further, so the crown is 1cm or so under the substrate - is that safe for the plants? Love plants...

    Hairgrass and amano shrimp

Any bright ideas to stop the amano's digging up my ele. acic. when foraging? I'm replanting the hairgrass every single day at the moment since I come home to find the shrimp have been digging through the top layer of substrate, and then the water flow has pulled the plants free! They're a bit...

Sagittaria subulata - How keep short?

After several months of apparent dormancy, the sagi. at the front of my Trigon has really taken off, sending out quite a lot of runners and also growing well - great news! I'm keen to keep it relatively short and compact (3-4"), but some of the plants are shooting up to 6-8" already. What's...

    Echinodorus tenellus and acicularis pruning.

Out of interest Tim, how aggressively do you cut back your ele. acic.? I've got a feeling I'm too lenient, as I leave about an inch on mine.

Eleocharis Acicularis - Several months and doesn't appear to have rooted?

So in my Rio 180 I'm having good success with getting my riccia carpet to establish, and over the last few weeks it's steadily growing in - another couple of months and I should have a full carpet (it's low tech). Good news. What isn't quite so good news is the way I'm struggling with the ele...

    Eleocharis Acicularis seems pale?

The Ele. Acic that I've got in my Rio 180 downstairs seems to be quite pale when compared to the plants I've got upstairs in my nano. They don't seem to be dying off, or suffering from any melt, they're just really pale. Any thoughts on the cause? Dose all in one ferts, 2x 30W T8s on for 5...

Elecocharis Acicularis (and mini) - Emersed Start?

Will do, expect to have your name cursed later this month though! (Only verbally, not into voodoo dolls, so don't worry :P).

Elecocharis Acicularis (and mini) - Emersed Start?

I've got to say, I'm not sure I'd do it on anything bigger than a nano. When I look at how much there is in my Rio 180, there must be 200-300 plantlets in there I expect!
  24. LancsRick

Elecocharis Acicularis (and mini) - Emersed Start?

Ok, I can cope with that recommendation for the Ebi. There's no way I'm redoing the Rio though, I'll just replant any escaping plantlets. Damn you for the helpful advice that wasn't what I wanted to hear Nath :p.

Elecocharis Acicularis (and mini) - Emersed Start?

So I'll be setting up a nano this month, and as I made a brew in my kitchen earlier and observed the various bits of Ele. Acic floating around in my Rio 180, I wondered....would an emersed start help avoid this in the nano? My experience with both Ele. Acic and Ele. Acic sp Mini so far has...

    Anubias Leaves Green Spot Algae

Potentially yes, but that might be no bad thing since otherwise hey will breed like crazy and take over your tank! EDIT: As coincidence would have it, I have green spot algae on my anubias too - I presume it's not BBA spores since they've been like that for a LONG time without coming to...

Why is my tiger lotus suddently shooting to the surface?

My tiger lotus has been a long standing member of my tank for a good few months now. In that time it has grown well, with a good red colour, and I haven't changed anything about light intensity, photoperiod, ferts or temperature. In the last week though, it's started to grow rapidly towards the...

    Does riccia become self-anchoring?

Understand that it needs trimming, it was more the fact that in his article, the areas it spreads to it seems to attach itself to? I'm thinking of the "After 3 weeks" photo partway down the page. http://www.ukaps.org/riccia.htm
  31. LancsRick

    Does riccia become self-anchoring?

I'm going to have a bash at a riccia carpet, and have read the article on here about it. I've got one question - the article shows considerable effort in meshing and restraining the original section which is placed in the tank, but no mention after that about restraining it once the riccia has...

    Storing 1-2-Grow Plants?

I decided not to wait and planted it all tonight. Really impressed with both the quality and number of plantlets. Only downside is that the plants are much smaller than you would get from a a normal pot, but as long as you're willing to let them grow in, that's a bit of a non-issue.

    Storing 1-2-Grow Plants?

I've received some plants today but can't plant until Saturday - do I need to do anything with the 1-2-Grow pot of stauro repens or can I just leave it on the windowsill for a couple of days? Cheers!

How to plant trimmings with next to no stem?

Ok, I'll just do some fine lead crafting! Trimming leaves is always an option but I'd rather not, they're lovely plantlets.

How to plant trimmings with next to no stem?

I've just got some lovely looking staurogyne repens trimmings from Logi-cat, and now need to plant them. I've never tried planting trimmings like this before (i.e. no roots, and a few mm of stem below the cut), so I was wondering how best to anchor them in my tank? There isn't enough to get a...

    Swords and Java Problem

That's not a complete fertiliser, which is why you're seeing holes appear (symptom of lack of ferts). Consider TPN+ or James' Planted Tank equivalent. That said, I'm still learning - no doubt one of the more experienced guys will be along soon.

Do some planting - disturb mulm - horrible looking plants

Re: Do some planting - disturb mulm - horrible looking plant I may as well post in here rather than start a new thread - any recommendations for a gravel vac? I see some for under a tenner and some for much more, is there any quality difference or are you just paying for names?

Do some planting - disturb mulm - horrible looking plants

Re: Do some planting - disturb mulm - horrible looking plant I've got 8 juvenile corys in there, which I hoped would form a good cleanup crew - am I mistaken? Since I've got tetras in the tank, and will be adding other fish over the coming weeks, I was thinking that shrimps would just become...

Do some planting - disturb mulm - horrible looking plants

Ok, I wasn't sure whether to put this in Filters or Plants, so hopefully I chose right! Whenever I do any planting adjustment in my tank, I stir up a load of debris/mulm out of the substrate, which is to be expected. The problem though is that as the tank clears, loads of this debris settles on...
