Any types of nylon fishing line to avoid?

I've got both bait elastic and the nylon I linked in the first post coming, so I'll see how I get on. Cotton thread (which I use at the moment) would be great if it just rotted away a bit more slowly!

    Cheers, ordered!

Any types of nylon fishing line to avoid?

Cotton thread is rotting away too quickly in my tank to let the moss graft onto the mesh properly. I'm therefore going to redo things with nylon fishing line so it isn't an issue. Before I get some el cheapo from eBay (link below), are there any things to be wary of around cheap manufacture and...

    Another DIY cabinet!

I've got a history spanning both roses, so you can imagine the internal conflict that rages there :P.

    Another DIY cabinet!

Where are you based Oldbloke? Maybe I can indulge my MTS by stealth - small tank on a big stand, let the missus get used to the stand, and then let the tank magically grow to fit...

I'm in a long term relationship with a Dewalt Radial that I think is older than me.....

    Another DIY cabinet!

Nicely done, biscuit jointers are handy bits of kit! The track saws are great if you need the portability, but I find radial arm saws so much more versatile, although needing to use a rollerstand for longer work can be a pain.

    New stand question

You don't mention what tank is going on this! If using interior MDF, then make sure you seal it well, or it will blow as soon as it gets wet.

Moss trimming, no mess - now with video

I expect some shrimp get a free rollercoaster ride too!

Has anyone ever done a fully automated tank?

Sure I mentioned trimming up there! (Yes, I'm an engineer, there's a certain element of "because I can" to the rationale of this thread!)
  13. LancsRick

Has anyone ever done a fully automated tank?

Emphasis on "fully" here. The reason for my thinking here is that I love the idea of a high tech tank. The colour of the plants, the rate of growth, breadth of plant selection. All of these things are great. Unfortunately none of these things cope well with not having regular maintenance...

    Idea for Fluval Ebi stand

Thanks Mark, interesting to see the result of your old thread, looks really good. I'll wait and see what feedback I get in here. More than happy to share my final design when I've built something.

    Idea for Fluval Ebi stand

Well having completed a full rebuild of my bathroom, I'm going to tidy up my bedroom as a lighter project. Part of this is going to be sorting out a proper stand for the 30l Fluval Ebi that currently sits on an old chest of drawers with my Sakura shrimp and Galaxy Rasboras in. From my other...

Projects people want to see, but don't have time for?

I'll admit it, this is one of my favourite sections of the forums. Fish are pretty, plants are lush, but at the end of the day it's fixing things and making things that I love. Here we reach the crux of the problem - I'm a DIY'er/engineer/hobbyist/madman without a particular urge for a...

    Seneye Water Monitoring System

Well WINE has been running to a limited extent on the Pi, so testing whether this software works would be possible, albeit not a definite answer!

    Seneye Water Monitoring System

I've often wondered about doing something similar with an Arduino or similar. Main thing will be the cost of any sensors, which I haven't looked into. Certainly pH would be a doddle, I'm not sure about the others. Never followed up the thought since I run only low tech, specifically to keep...

    My acrylic tube bending solution

Not from the spring, it's the actual acrylic. I'll try heating for a bit longer and trying again, cheers. I'm probably going to do at least 2 of my tanks, so it'll work out cheaper in the long run. There's no denying that my first couple of metres aren't likely to yield anything useful though!

    My acrylic tube bending solution

Hoping for a bit of help. I'm trying to bend some tube (16/20), and I'm using a spring and heat gun, but I keep getting "wrinkles" on the inner curve of the bend. What's the cause of this? Cheers!

Any difference between all the silicones out there?

I need to get my grubby paws on some clear colourless silicone for my tank for bits and bits, and was wondering whether there was any difference between all the brands knocking around at all?

    Cutting acrylic

As a general rule, acrylic won't shatter, it has quite a degree of flex to it. Be aware of heat when you're doing it, as you can easily generate a high enough temperature to melt it. the main piece of advice I can give is to keep the protective film on until the last possible moment, as...

The Reason I always try to go for dual filters...

Just came back from a few days away to find that the little internal on my shrimp tank (holding tank whilst I complete my Ebi build) had packed up, and ammonia had spiked. I've lost about 30% of my red cherries, and have given them an emergency home in my Rio 180. Mixture of sadness and anger...

Secure 22mm to 16mm tubing connection

Trick question! I'd get a hose adaptor and do a proper job... Failing that, I'd coat the outside of the smaller tube in sealant, heat the larger tube, and push a good inch or two of the smaller hose inside the larger one

Best Way to modify a glass lid?

Cheers, just rung my local place and they'll do it for a few quid (Would have cost me £7 for the acrylic anyways). Going to drop it in on Saturday so they can do it. Thank guys.

Best Way to modify a glass lid?

Due to the fact that I'm using external filters on my Fluval Ebi, the supplied glass lid doesn't fit. What's the best way to modify it? I need to recess two of the corners by about 1 inch. My fallback option would be to buy a sheet of acrylic and make my own lid by hand, but that seems a bit...

    400lph in a Fluval Ebi?

I can get my hands on a brand new JBL e700 for £63, cheaper than an Eheim 2213. As a result, I'm considering going with this for my tank, as the JBL's I've got on my big tanks seem better than the Eheims. Even if I throttle this back to half strength though, I'm going to be putting 350-400lph...

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

Nah, I'm not worried for a small one, hence why I'm sticking with smaller ones. The Ebi seems perfect, so I've got my name down on that now. Just the tank and heater to sort! Also considering the cunning application of transparent silcone to create some floating rocks, a la Avatar...

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

Going to go for the Ebi (effectively the same as the Flora), and look to source a ETH200 and Eheim 2213+ second hand. Once I've got those, so I'll be certain of pipe sizes, I'll order the acrylic bits from eBay. Hopefully this might be my first journal that's actually worth reading!

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

My local LFS has offered me an Ebi for £60, plus £30 credit against my Edge if I turn it in, so £30 effectively for an Ebi - think it's a no brainer! Just need to sort filter, heater and tubing now and this project could be getting off the ground!

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

Thanks for l the comments guys. I didn't realise that the Hydors are discontinued - if that's the case then I'll look to pick up a second hand one since they're such a neat solution. Partly my concern on volume is the weight, he other part is the amount of water to come through the ceiling if...

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

I'd probably consider that, I'll just try not to think about it too much :P.

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

My house often gets quite cold (12C), so I prefer to keep heaters in place to ensure that none of the livestock suffers as a result.

Equipment thoughts for an "elegant" nano?

Some of you will have seen that I'm looking to sell off my Fluval Edge (23l) due to the access restrictions that come with the tank structure. That said, it has at least made me appreciate the importance of the tank aesthetics as well as the aquascaping part of things - my Rio 180 and Trigon 190...

The ultimate DIY spray bar, your opinion please

That will be a disaster I'm afraid. Stick with a single full length spraybar. Clive has previously posted up a narrative comparing flow to vortices off the tip of an aircraft wing which is a very intuitive way of visualising what you are trying to create.

    Project/Bargain Undertaking!

I was going to see what it would be like by just removed the beads and leaving the thin layer sticking the panes together intact - not as good an idea as I'd thought? Already got testing ideas thanks, don't want to get anything wrong with large volumes of water!

    Project/Bargain Undertaking!

What does £25 get you these days? Half a tank of fuel (if that). A handful of recent DVDs. A small restaurant meal. Oh, and also, a 4ft x 2ft x 1ft fish tank with very nice clarity glass.... So I liberated this from someone's garage today in exchange for what I view as a miniscule amount of...

    diying a super canister fillter

Mechnically you're going to need to check that all the couplings will take the additional pressure generated by the increased pump output, and you'll probably need to rethink the pipework in your tank. Biologically, I have no idea, I'll leave it to smarter guys to comment on that!

Hagen Elite Mini Heater - Should there be cloth in it?!

I've just taken delivery of a Hagen Elite Mini Heater (25w), and there appears to be a piece of fiberglass cloth over the heater element within the glass tube. Is this meant to be there? Never seen it before, and just wanted to check before I plugged in it, in case it was a manufacturing fault...

    Trigon 190 - Removing Background?

I'm planning my tank evolution at the moment, and on the list is going to be the removal of the padded background which comes with it as standard. I'm leaving it be for the time being since there's a nice bit of algae there in places, and I'm introducing some Cory's in the next day or so, which...
