I wash my balls daily. Media on the other hand is a different story. Sintered glass I rinse about every 6 months, and sponges get a squeeze every month or so. No need for sponges Bob!
I don't see a reason why not... but you could also simply pick up some mature media from your local Maidenhead Aquatics or Pets@Home who are usually happy to share :)
You can check the flow rate by using the filter to fill a measuring jug up. Time how long it takes, then work it out from there. Most filters are way overrated anyway as they are tested without media or hoses attached. You can expect a drop off of up to 40% when running it with media and hoses.
You don't say what type of algae it is...
Lowering your nitrate levels wont help as excess nutrients don't cause algae, and if your plants starve you'll just be adding to the problem.
You'll probably find its caused by inconsistent co2 levels due to your DIY co2. On larger tanks you'd be far...
If you're going fully planted (which I guess you are as this is a plant forum lol), then aim for 10 times the volume at least.
This will be reduced when you add media and the hoses, so don't be afraid to aim for 15 times turnover or more.
Sorry Simon, I missed this...
I didn't have different grades of sponge with either of my 1200's or 700's :?
One 1200 has 3 trays full of sintered glass, 1 tray of sponge (top tray). The other 1200 has two trays of sintered glass (bottom tray empty) and top tray is sponge.
Nah, I got mine from the lighting guys on eBay... EQJ is it? EJQ? Anywho, they messed me about a bit with my luminaire, so they offered me some free media. I took it and bought more at the same time, avoiding the silly postage fees
I filled mine with sintered glass media, using just two sponges in the top tray. The sintered glass is much better than the bio balls and ceramic hoops that are usually supplied.
I've got a mignon 360 and I really dislike it for several reasons - its rattly so I've had to add some foam tape to the lid. Its made from cheap plastic. It isn't great for getting co2 around the tank. And its ugly.
I'll second this... although I have to say the boxy input and output design is horrible. I swapped mine for some eheim curved hooks/crooks.
I own two ex1200's and two ex700's and I'm happy with them overall.
No, just where the top meets the filter casing.

Foam tape, single sided. I originally bought it because my little boy would accidentally slam the fish tank cupboard doors, making all fish and shrimp jump a mile  Works great :)
Mine was silent... once I took the top off. Putting it on caused a rattle which I hated. In the end I wrapped some padded tape around the outside edge, which seems to have solved the problem.
In both my EX700's and my EX1200 I've removed the crappy plastic bio balls and replaced them with sintered glass. I've also removed most of the coarse foam sponges as 6 in each is far too much  1 is plenty.
No, 2000 lph :)
This will probably be around 40% less when filled with media and hoses are attached, etc.
Consider two EX1200's or an FX5.
[edit to add] Filtration will be fine with one EX1200, but flow will be an issue, so you could just use an additional powerhead somewhere :)
The filter is capable of pumping 700lph though, so its doing what it says... it doesn't say anything about filtering the water... Just like mpg figures - the car may be capable of doing it, but it doesn't mean it will when your driving, as demonstrated on Top Gear and by Auto Express.
Planted...
Too true. I feel guilty every time I spend a few minutes in my lfs, having to hear them sell the most unsuitable stuff to people for silly prices. One day I'll say something
Exactly. Less than 10x actually - the tank is 71 litres.
Although I've removed most of the media and shortened the hoses, so its probably a bit more. I'll test 'em one day
About the spray bar - AE state its 21 inches, so it *should* be fine in a 60cm tank.
Email Richard at AE to see if thats the overall length or just the spray section. Should be ok either way though :)
Good call Ed, my 700's were like planes taking off at first  I gave 'em both a good shake and all was fine.. the 1200 I didn't use foam in, so it wasn't as bad.
Cool :D
The intake and spraybar pipes are different to the EX700 and EX1200 too... And yes, they're a pain in the ass to set up right because of the boxy design.
Looking forward to a loaded and unloaded flow test... and let us know how loud she is too :D
I wonder how much of a beast this thing is going to be?

Google Shopping has them priced around £189.
Re: Eheim Classics
Again, thanks for this mate :)
I explained I'd cut the pipe to fit the height of the tank, but they're sending a replacement anyway. Top bombing.
Re: Eheim Classics
First problem found! :o
I found this pic on another forum which should explain... Obviously someone else is having the same problem.
The connection on the intake pipe sits just above the water, and isn't sealed tight, so it sucks lots of air. I've changed the O ring, but...
Re: Eheim Classics
Wow, they arrived today, first thing. Wasn't expecting them until Monday tbh.
Very impressed so far... 1 unit up and running in less than ten minutes, and very quiet indeed.
Will let you know how it goes... Cheers! :D
Re: Eheim Classics
Bought 2 EX700's along with some spare media pads. Less than £100 including delivery :D
The second unit is going on my living room tank as soon as I get around to redoing it in the summer.
Thanks for your help and advice Steve. If I get problems, I'll come looking for...
Re: Eheim Classics
Under the tank it shall go then :)
Thanks for the tap info... My shrimp are a bit fussy when it comes to flow
I'm gonna put my order in later tonight or first thing for a EX700... might even get two :D
Re: Eheim Classics
Nice :)
I do prefer the Eheim intake/spraybar, but if the Tetratec is that good I might pick one up... I could always buy an Eheim kit at a later date :D
What about flow adjust though, Steve?
Thanks mate :)
Re: Eheim Classics
Thanks Steve.
That Tetratec does look good... saw a vid of the 1200 on the PFK site. Do you know if the spray bar and intake are the same on the 600 or 700 as the 1200? Can't find pics on google so far...
[edit] I take that back, it is the 700 they are showing on PFK >_<...
Are these any good?
I'm looking at getting the Eheim 2213 or 2214 for my 24x12x15" 18gal.
Or can you recommend another external filter? Something cheap that isn't going to leak over my new floor
Thanks
