    Aquascaping World Magazine November/December Issue

More the most part, I agree. PFK is aimed at the general hobbyist and people new to fishkeeping. But as Andy says, lets not even try to compare it to the likes of ASW magazine or AquaJournals as it makes no sense. iirc, Mr Amano stopped printing his magazines in English because there is not...

So many problems I don't know where to start!

Tbh, that last tank looks under maintained and past the point of saving. Plants aren't healthy, and they wont recover. A thorough clean and new plants would be recommended. A short light period and good maintenance is the key to any tank ime.

    Aquarium Cooling. Fans?

The Dyson fan is amazing... shockingly overpriced atm though  Think about it though, you'd cool down sitting in front of that Dyson fan, wouldn't you? Moving the stale air at the top of the tank (which is also heated by the lights) should give you a drop of a couple of degrees at least...

    Aquarium Cooling. Fans?

PC fans cool a PC when the room is warm, so yes :) As long as its moving the relatively stale air you should notice a small benefit. Years ago I used to drop a frozen 2 litre bottle of water in the tank if it got too warm... these days I'm far too lazy and just leave it... trouble is, the extra...

How to re-scape a hi-tech tank, once it's past its best

Why rinse the old substrate? You'll wash away what good is left in there and potentially end up with a massive ammonia spike after killing off the good bacteria. I'd either disturb it as little as possible, or replace it completely.

Discussion: Are we obsessed with circulation and flow?

Yeah, I think I'd rather an extra inlet and outlet for a second large canister filter over a powerhead though. The added media is a bonus, plus you're adding to the overall water volume.

Welcome to the zoo :) Firstly, 10 hours of light per day is way too much imo. Start off with 6 for a good few months, then increase to 7 for a couple of months, then 8. Plants don't need anymore than this. By far the best way of fertilizing is the EI method. Some find this confusing at first...

    One last try

Not at all Sam, we want you to succeed :) Your light unit looks quite high too - can you lower it closer to the water a bit? Move your DC around a bit too - and use the fish for signs of co2 being too high. If the fish are ok, you CAN go a little higher :D
  38. J

    One last try

The rocks could be upsetting a balance within the tank, but I think you are light limited. Add the third tube and more if you can - hc simply adores high light and co2, and struggles without it. Maybe a switch to dry powders is in order too?

ada gallery tanks - low flow, co2 bubbles stright to surface

I think most of the scapes are by Amano, with some done by Amano's Grasshoppers. I've always suspected they use alternative filtration to their stock ADA filters, which are then used for show during gallery open hours. I'm guessing co2 is also added by other means, with diffusers for show...

Oh there a shame :( Cat litter and playsand will be fine imo, but personally, I don't like the look of playsand in a tank - its too smooth and consistent in grain size and colour. You may also need more lighting as the wpg rule is different on small tanks. I have the same size tank and run...

    Substrate didnt fix it.

  64. J

    Substrate didnt fix it.

Patience Sam :) My hc takes a good few weeks to reall get going, even with high co2 and liquid carbon. What lighting levels do you have mate?
  65. J

    Substrate didnt fix it.

My hc always starts off like that mate... liquid carbon helps a great deal to get it up and running... make sure your flow of co2 and ferts to the plant is good. I found an increase in light helps a lot too, even with a short 6 hour photoperiod.
