I sometimes get this on my 2028 as well and happens when there is no water in the impellor housing. Easy to fix by just pouring water down the outlet tube until the water reaches the top. Then reconnect the hoses. Or the self prime should do the job as well.

This is what I use - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Silicone-Grease-for-Scuba-Diving-Suits-35g_W0QQitemZ310109750155QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_Scuba_SnorkellingEquipment_SM?hash=item310109750155&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318 - but there are plenty of others to...
I had the same problem with my ageing Ehein Pro II 2028 in that it weeped slightly when I turned it off at water change time. Cured the problem by removing the seal and giving it a good coating of silicone grease and then replacing it the other way around. Hasn't leaked since.
The silicone...
Not sure as I've never had one. But from memory I think it's the bit that goes over the glass and into the tank. I'll see if I can find out more.

I believe this is a common problem with these Tetratec filters. It's something to do with the intake. Do some googling and you'll find others who have had the same problem. Tetratec seem quite good at sorting it out.

Mechanical filters won't remove chemicals as such, but filters do have a habit of removing iron if it is dosed using iron chelate. Could be because of Fe and PO4 reaction which then precipitates out and collects in the filter. Same reason why iron sometimes collects in the substrate. A good...
Just some quick notes on Eheim vs Rena that I've seen. Rena's flow rates are quite good but get a bit of clogging and they soon reduce quite a lot. Eheim's seem to do better in this respect. I like the build quality and ease of cleaning with the Rena's.
Take a look at some reviews -...
Asking people's opinions on filters is always going to get very mixed replies, often quite heated  .
I wouldn't touch Fluvals or Tetratecs, but others seem quite happy with them. I like Eheim best, closely followed by Rena. Go with what best suits your needs and pocket as most do a pretty...
Never used the XP3 but did use a XP2 for some time and found it a brilliant filter. Very quiet and easy to clean. Build quality I also found very good. I only run an Eheim now because I'm loyal to them after 20+ years of using them without problems. Otherwise I'd be more than happy to run a XP3...
Ed brings up some interesting ideas on the biological side of things which I totally agree with. Going against what is commonly suggested I think that adding 2 large filters on a tank is just a tad overkill. A single good filter will more than adequately deal with the tiny amounts on ammonia...
Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
That sounds like it. Some people have brought them cheap on fleabay and then had problems trying to get them returned. Hence why I don't buy items like this of fleabay as they are often seconds or returns being sold as new.

Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
Did I read somewhere that Tetratec's are having problems with leaking seals and some have needed to be returned for a replacement? Might be worth buying from a reputable source just in case you need to return it, and not a cheapie off...
A lot depends on the room temperature. If your room is always warm then yes otherwise I'm not 100% sure. I run a 300 watt one on my 210 litre with no probs even when the room gets quite cold. Had mine about 3 years now and would highly recommend them.
ETH200 uses 12mm tubing and the ETH300 uses...
