    HC root depth

Just remember that aquatic plants don't need to feed from their roots 100% of the time. HC is a stem so it needs root nutients not so much either. Some of the best HC I've seen has been grown in normal sand. The root ime normally gets around 1-2 cm. Give it plenty of c02 of feed the water column.

    Eleocharis sp red

I'm afraid it's not as easy as that...it needs to be profitable. It needs to be a quick grower preferably out of water. It will probably have different requirements to the normal eliocharis. This might be one reason we are yet to see bucephalandra on the tropica menu, as it's just too slow...

    microsorum problems

I have very healthy ferns that start with new translucent growth, which eventually turn bright green. IMO it's just new leaves taking their transformation into new life. I've never had a problem.

    What am I doing wrong?

Looks pretty healthy to me! Here's a pic of the e red devil I had in a tank. Echinodorus Red devil by Ian Holdich, on Flickr As it took it's submersed form the leaves curled and twisted.

    What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure upping the c02 will do anything for this plant. What are the other plants looking like in the tank?
  20. Ian Holdich

    What am I doing wrong?

It was how the plant was supposed to grow.
  21. Ian Holdich

    What am I doing wrong?

    Crypt holes

. Clive is correct really, holes do mean lack of c02, however, I'm yet to meet a crypt leave, sword leaf etc etc, that are grown emmersed, that actually adapt under water. They almost always end up having to be removed. Whether that be in a week or 3 months. They never survive. Once it's...

    Help- planting Staurogyne Repens

    Just push it in...
  26. Ian Holdich

    Staurogyne Repens care?

The reason you'd normally do this is that you actually get propagation quicker, see diagram... This way, you develop two stems from the original plant, and you have the top from the other plant ready to go for the next propagation.
  27. Ian Holdich

    Staurogyne Repens care?

I've used the 1-2 grow stuff on many occasions, the hardest thing is actually planting. As the root structure isn't great, you have to push it quite far into the substrate. What I normally do is split it in 8-10 bits and plant that way. You will get some floaters, but just re plant. IMO this is...

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

It is difficult to ensure that c02 actually gets to substrate level, and that's why I like atomisers as you can observe the c02 bubbles going along the substrate. A lot of these plants in the wild don't get 'highlight' when submerged. A lot stay in shaded areas, and in deeper water that we have...

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

This is why I put 'Ime', as you'll read dated stuff all over the net. There are plenty of people here who have grown it under lowish light. I grew a lovely tight carpet under two t8s, I just hammered it with c02. And Sacha, It would take a while for it to actually carpet. It's actually a stem...
  33. Ian Holdich

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Why not give glosso a go? Ime glosso isn't light demanding, it's more c02 demanding. Stau doesn't carpet as well either.

    Hygrophila guianensis

It'll be fine. Just watch for the melt on the old growth.
  35. Ian Holdich

    Hygrophila guianensis

Hey Rob, I've used this before, it did ok for me in a low light set up. It can melt when you introduce it to your tank, so, just nip the tops and replant if it does melt. Ime most hygro's do well in a low tech tank.

    help! with glossotigma

  42. Ian Holdich

    help! with glossotigma

Again, this is a lack of c02 at substrate level. You need more at substrate level. The reason plants get leggy is due to a hormone called ethylene that builds up with lack of flow and c02. This is a classic sign.

Twisted leaf Growth on Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini pics & VDO !! HELP

I'd also say that c02 isn't reaching these plants. I'm not sure how long they've been planted, but the bottom of the stem either looks like emersed growth or it's not getting c02, this is the biggest giveaway.

    1-2 Grow Storage?

Have a read of this thread, Clive's input is great. Spectrum...doesn't matter...does it? | UK Aquatic Plant Society In a marine tank it's a little different. Plants are way more opportunistic, and will use any light given to them.

    help! with glossotigma

The colour temp doesn't really matter, just make sure you hit that glosso with co2, also remember that a drop checker is just another piece of test equipment, so monitor your plants they're a better way of knowing whether you have enough c02.
  47. Ian Holdich

    help! with glossotigma

Glosso doesn't need high light. It needs ime, very good flow around the substrate. With a decent amount of c02 in that flow. It doesn't need nutrient rich substrate either. Don't trim it yet as you'll have none left! Ime it's always gets to leave plants for a good few week 'to settle' before you...

Correct planting (and propagation) of Bucephalandra sp. 'Kedagang'

I found it grew better in aquasoil (any soil will do). I also had some on a rock and it survived. It didn't grow much, probs 2 leaves in 2 months. It may take a fair while for you to propagate it, it for me was the slowest growing species of plant I have owned.

Moss question - Tropica Fontinalis Sp. Willow

Yes, it looks nice once it gets going, as you get a really light green constrats from the new growth. I have have to secure mine down since the scape has been going...that difficult to do underwater, so my only advice would be to ensure you have it well secured from the beginning.

Glossostigma growing up despite over 1.5 watts per liter?!

Hey ed, that pic above screams to me "more co2/better distribution". There's some gda and leggy glosso, both would indicate lack of co2 in these regions. As good as a drop checker is, there's nothing like looking around the tank to see what's going on. Good luck with it mate?

Glossostigma growing up despite over 1.5 watts per liter?!

Just to back up the light theory... There is a hormone released by plants called ethylene, which can cause leggyness if not released properly.
