The output of a filter is measured at the max amount with no media at the ideal height. All manufacturers state that. Eheim's website (and apparently JBL stated above) states the normal output they would expect from the filters.
The '10x' volume takes into account that filters in general only...
I like the long aqua rebell intake. Has loads of slits.
My outflows vary but a couple are the Aquatic Magic knock offs that I bought years ago. They work well, are cheap and have lasted 8 years :)
I also have one of the Gush 'O' bubble outlets on my Nano. 10mm.
I know many talk about cheap...
After leaking through the first day and there barely being enough water to cover the bottom of the bucket it has sat in it seems to have stopped leaking totally.
If I can buy a diaphragm then I will but what I would prefer to do is close off and seal that whole area completely and eliminate the...
I think I have sorted out this leaky problem now. Doing Tetratec's investigative work for them.
The back story is I have had this 'orrible' filter in a cupboard for quite a few years now since I replaced it with an Eheim.
This was probably one of the originals and yes Tetratec sent me a new...
I've still got some of the original knock off ones from Aquatic Magic with the glass ball on the end of the intake :) Must've been 2007 and been in continuous use :)
I did it similar to you in that I had the Lily in a front corner and a Koralia diagnoally across still firing straight ahead. I just use it to boost the circle if you like. Seemed to work fine :)
AC
I would position both inlets next to their Lily pipes. Complete the 'circuit' if you like.
So the rear right one I would put front right.
Other than that looks good to me.
Glass spraybars do exist but as far as I know they aren't made anymore. I guess there was a lack of demand.
So you...
With the Boyu filter's O ring stretching I decided to ditch it rather than search the world for a new O ring. I bought a Resun CY-20 for £17 including shipping and so far it is better in both appearance, setup and function than the Boyu EF-05.
The inlet 'crook' was long enough for my 80cm tall...
Lol. Mine is in the bin :) The large sealing O ring (very thin diameter but large length stretched and therefore wouldn't seal anymore.
PTFE tape was wrapped around the groove many times for a week until a Resun replacement arrived.
The Resun was cheaper, looks better and so far is working...
Lol. you would have to ask Eheim. As I said before you shouldn't need to and the manual doesn't say to fill the cannister first.
With mine everything is empty. I put the inlet into the tank and the air will keep the pipe empty. Then I put my big old mouth around the lily and suck for all of...
You shouldn't ned to fill the filter first, in fact the manual will suggest so. However itf it works then go for it.
With my ProII I just fit up the empty cannister with the pipes. then put the inlet (tank to filter) in the tank where it will stay then suck on the lily outlet (filter to tank)...
No. I seem to recall there being a postcount to stop someone from coming on. posting then bumping a couple of times just to sell stuff :) 25 seems to ring a bell. Obvs if someone comes on posts 25 for the sake posts they are going to be banned. lol
AC
Lol. I paid £75 for that 2224 inc shipping. I've just sold the spray bar, outlet, and inlet pipes individually for a fiver each on ebay. lol (buy it now and snapped up.) waiting for the strainer to go now and that'll be a nice round £20 plus pastage in my pocket :)
So now its only cost me...
I had a thick piece of polystyrene under my one. Reduced the noise but still too noisy :)
As for prime buttons working first time. YES mine did for quite a while but it got stiffer and stiffer and eventually was pulling my shoulder out trying to pump whilst feeling it pulling water through...
Can't comment on the Ecco. I've heard bad things about the range for a long time so I went for a ProII
I thought the TT was quiet when I got it. but after switching to an EheimPro2 3 years later after absolute kaboodles of problems I suddenly realised what quiet was.
The TT is reasonably...
Its not so much the lily that is the problem it is the glass. Glass spraybars and lilys etc are much thicker, not in their actual outer diameter but in the thickness of the actual glass. That therefore restricts the flow a little.
So whether it be a spraybar or lily pipe you get a slight...
Lol. Its more a question of money. May look like I do loads of DIY AND PRojects etc but the reason is I think (<---too confident sometimes) I can do better for cheaper. So I build my own this and my own that. More success than failure but some things are failures.
Anyway wanna sneaky peek...
I've got one. Works OK, flow is allright however it is on a 10ltr.
Only downsides IMO:
The hoses are just pushed on as the threaded hose tighteners are nigh on impossible to get past the end of the hose. You tighten it and it pushes thehose off so I don't tighten them. The hoses are a...
Tetra were pretty good with me too sending out a new assembly which stopped the leak (first year). Then last year (third year) the impellor was rattling and they sent me a new one. No change. I didn't bother hassling them again. Learnt a lesson about skimping and bought an Eheim. Wish I had...
I thought I posted earlier but it seems to have disappeared!!! Aherm.
I was thinking the other day over a recent articles' claims that the small slits reduce flow.
I got to thinking why? If the area of the openings are equal to or greater than the area of the inside diameter of the tube...
1. Blue Algae issues - Would suggest low nitrates or poor maintenance although sometimes it can be for reasons unknown :) Someone else can advise on this one ;)
2. PH fluctuation - Perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
3. Aeration - There are 'trade offs' with aeration.
1 - It will...
I think they were right first time with the hose ends. That drip looks similar to one I have experienced previously and in the end all it was was the actual clear hose. Wasn't holding it's position within the tightener. Therefore I cut the final half inch off and then all was OK.
While this...
I have the Eheim bendy one (I just bought the 12mm one as it was cheaper than buying the set) and also have the Hagen Marina set which has 1 long brush in it.
Previously (until I snapped it by accident) I used the Hagen Marina coiled wire bendy one which worked better than the Eheim and Marina...
I think the EX400 is after the design flaw was discovered.
I use one a Boyu (Eden 501 copy) style filters. 200lph on my 10Ltr Nano. Then I use a Newattino 10W heater (smaller than a chocolate bar.) Easycarbo for CO2. Can't see the point in pressurised on such a small tank :)
AC
In order from the input which is usually the bottom tray I think it is the large things going to the small things.
i.e. ceramic rings/bio balls at the bottom to trap the big stuff, then sponges to catch the little stuff and the cotton/floss last to trap the minute stuff.
Do it the other way...
I have both those pipesets not being used at the moment BUT they are for the EX700 so are 12mm not 16mm.
You can have them for a tenner if you want them but I think you are after the 16mm based on your filter.
AC
I e-mailed direct from the site to the UK rep and told him the problem. He replied to check the O rings and vaseline etc. to which I replied 'done that'.
He sent me the big O ring and the removeable in out part for free within days. Not had a problem since :)
AC
I didn't see a huge difference in clarity but then my water has been super since I got an external filter 2 years ago. The water I thought was crystal clear obviously was obviously a 'smidgeon' away from crystal clear ;)
I use it mainly for it's ability to remove organic wastes. That way...
When it is brown after rinsing in tank water then it's time to recharge. I do mine about every month and a half :)
I think Dave Spencer said that his lasts about 3 months
AC
I only have Sainsbury's basics malt vinegar to hand :) Not spending money to save money. lol
Not worried about the smell either. Will go out in the shed like it does when it is bleach soaking.

The all new Seachem Milano Italian Chianti red wine vinegar available for £14.99 per 250ml sponsored by Anthony Worral Thompson.
Instructions:
Soak the Seachem bag in 500ml of vinegar for 8 hours, rinse and soak in another 500ml of vinegar for 8 hours.
Alternatively use Seachem acid buffer...
The question asked is can household vinegar be used instead of buffers after regnerating Purigen.
The answer from the Seachem's forum is:

Money saved again. lol

I don't think it's adjustable flow as in that each unit can be adjusted lph wise.
The flow direction is obviously adjustable by being able to point it in any direction from the pivot.
These units were designed with 'wavemaking' principle behind them for marine. Then you attach several to the...
I have the 1 in my 125Ltr and run it 24/7. Stops the detritus from 'resting' on the substrate so along with giving a good flow, blowing at the diffuser making the bubbles divert all over the place and rippling the surface it is doing multiple jobs really.
I have mine about an inch below the...
Established plants' roots put enough oxygen into the substrate for this to happen. Not sure on how effective the substrate is compared to filters though. Thinking more of removing particles from the water etc.
AC
I would suggest it is the other way around in that Crypts probably block the flow more than stems do. My tank is full of crypts. I have my Koralia1 near the surface though and pointing straight across the tank. I have no problems with fish being blown about nor plants being bent over.
AC
the external will more likely be much better at filtering but with you will need a much higher lph than your internal.
For example a Fluval3+ is rated at 700lph and due to it being internal then as long it is cleaned weekly then it will be closer to it stated than as external as the flow...
The flow reductions were 'factored' in when the 10x 'suggestion' first started. We estimate each filter is around 50% actual of the stated lph so in theory the need here is 5x.
However since then we have moved further on and many of us are using much much more.
Saying that for a small 60l tank...
My filter is there purely to filter now and the Koralia1 for the flow. When you think that a powerhead is internal with virtually no flow reduction (mine is 1500lph) compared to the filter with its limitations and restriction (mine is 700lph x 50% average = 350lph) then the filter is providing...
Its 300lph I think. Thats a strange tank size 2ft long but 8 inches depth and height. I didn't look properly I guess just saw 2ft and thought it was a 60/70 litre :)
AC
My Koralia1 is only just under the surface and silent.
However for the first week or so it would start to click and humm. Each time it started to make the noise I turned it off and then on again and it stopped. Doesn't do it at all now.
Probably just something needing to get bedded in. Give...
There are so many variables on this that it could cause a few problems with conflicting info.
There are the variables of
cannister position. Not just the height but the position can mean more bends, etc.
Length of hose
Media used
etc.
For example yours on the other thread seems very low. If...
I've not even thought about changing my sponges/ceramics/bio balls and they are nearing 2 years old.. They are a little stained but I can't see that they would become less effective due to staining so I don't worry. Water is nice and clear and fish nice and healthy so it must be doing OK
AC
I don't mean the manufacturers are lying about the lph on their boxes. More like whoever said (even it was the manufacturers) that they test with media and hose attached etc must have been lying.
I found the thread on here and Zig tested the EX1200 at 42% and Ceg tested the Eheim 2080 at 47%...
What I mean is when the test was done on here wasn't the Eheim something like 54% of flow rate compared to 51% of the Tetratec or something similar? If Eheim were doing as said on the other forum this would imply that with Eheim underplaying their lph then this 54% is effectively much less...
I noticed this statement on another forum and wondered what people's thoughts on it were. I remember we came to the conclusion that the manufacturer's gave a maximum lph based on what the powerhead on it's own could achieve but these statements contradict this.
The poster was suggesting that...
The Koralia/Tunze are basically the same as a powerhead for the purpose we are using them for here. Just a case of getting water moving.
On the marine forums the Tunze gets much more good reviews than the Koralia but it is also a little more expensive.
Shows how well something sells when the...
Eheims don't break, ask the Eheim fanclub who belittle every other brand ;)
Hope you get it sorted t4u. Not nice when that sort of thing happens.
I remember when my Tetratec was leaking all the time it was really frustrating but then Tetratec just sent me the large O ring and the hose...
I wouldn't say I'm clumsy but I'm not patient nor careful and am fairly careless when cleaning mine yet they are still in tact.
In fact the only time I broke one (I had 2 sets seing as they were so cheap) was when I was lazy as usual and while it was in situ was trying to get hold of a trumpet...
Also inferring a product is inferior can in some cases be a sweeping generalisation and may also be due to the user.
1 person may be disappointed whilst others are very happy even though the product is the same. Opinions are good but they need views from both sides to give a balanced view and...
I'll beat you by a pound. lol

I know this is the filter forum but should add that AE's 40% is only off ADA glas filter in and outs!! I just went looking at the glass diffusers after reading your post :( ;)
AC
I think we need to give these fish shops a break really. They are fish shops not aquatic plant specialists and at the end of the day they can only say what they have been told / experienced themselves. A bit like a tennis player trying to teach you squash!!!
I would definately get 2 filters...
I think most just use an airline connector and fit it into the hose somehow. I would wait for answers from people who use this method. Other way is to feed the airline straight into the tank and into the filter intake that way but may be a little different for a plumbed setup.
AC
I wouldn't have thought it would have any problem other than the usual problems with CO2 in the filter being trapped air / premature ageing of rubber seals etc. Saying that lots of people plumb their reactors directly into the filter.
My own thought would be that if you are putting the CO2 in...
Always saying it but if I ever need to remove some cloudy water due to disrupting the substrate a little then Wilko Supawool for 79p is what I use. No cutting into shape, I just stuff it in, spread it and then cover with one of the foam pads.
AC
I use all the media at the mo that was originally supplied except for the carbon and the filter floss sheet. the former for obvious reasons and the latter because it got clotted and I couldn't be bothered to replace it. No problems with water clarity though. When I do disturb the substrate...
A lot of the fish we keep are not from turbulent rivers though. Many are from almost still waters or stagnant pools in which case the more flow the more they are stressed. I do find however that most fish I get love to play in the output flow for a while before resting in the quieter areas.
AC
Several hours after writing the last post I thought for a second and then set about returning the original spraybar and inlet that came with the tank with dramatic effect.
Although not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as the glassware, the Tetratec's 'stock' pipes are quite nice and...
If your filter and the powerheads get you close to 10x then that should be OK. Wouldn't hurt getting a larger filter eventually and always worth having 2 on a large tank so that the ammonia doesn't have to travel the length of the tank all the time before reaching the filter return.
AC
Another thought. theoretically when we add any non standard pipes where the hose fits over it we are reducing flow as the pipe is much thinner inside diameter than the hose and pipe it replaced is?
Thinking particularly on glass pipes again where the internal diameter of the pipe is 8mm...
Powerhead
Advantages
It wil be much cheaper than a filter.
At equal lph it will be much smaller.
There will be almost zero flow reduction.
It will be easy to clean.
Disadvantage
It will be inside the tank.
External Filter
Advantages
It will be outside the tank.
It will provide increased media...
The original pipe had the usual 'cup' style fitment at the end with slits around its circumference. This is much much more than the slit along the bottom of the glass one:
The Glass one just has the slit along the bottom and then a single 3mm hole just above the ball either side left and...
Thinking out aloud (or in typeface. lol)
I was wondering if when we change the in/out pipes from our filter's supplied ones if it could mean a reduced lph.
I am specifically thinking of my Tetratec where I replaced the pipes with glass ones. The Lily outflow shouldn't make a difference but...
The reason for inlet and outlet at the same end (normally in one corner) is that the inlet is pulling water in from the bottom and the outlet is pushing water out from the top. The outlet is also pushing the water away whilst the inlet is pulling water in.
Therefore assuming you had the outlet...
Just spotted in Cegs 'quote' that its a 125 gallon!!!!I misread it and thought you had 125ltr. Ignore what I said before. You are way way below the 10x and you are right about the 1x. You need 2 big big filters on that tank ideally to get you up to anywhere near the 10x mark. Maybe if you...
The 2217 does 600lph max (with no media, no inline equip and minimal hosing) so if you add a small powerhead of approx 4-600lph then you should be OK.
I have a 125 with a 700lph filter and a 400lph powerhead.
If you dont want a powerhead then look for a filter in the 1200-1400lph range...
Exactly what I did when my Tetratec started leaking. Good job I didn't get rid of the fluval3+ when I bought the external.
Back on with the Tetratec now though.
AC
There is an eheim brush that is on a flexible nylon cord which you can pull through.
With regard the sealed end, I use 100% bleach solution and then leave the sealed end sitting in it for half an hour, then rinse thoroughly and sit it in some dechlor for half an hour. Another rinse and then...
This is deja vu for me. I contacted Tetra and they sent me a replacement O ring and a replacement tap fitting for the top and not had a problem since.
I was cleaning the lot fitting it and fine. after a few hours it was starting to leak.
It maybe that if you remove the large O ring that you...
Is it not also a case of rather than the plant pearling the bubbles can be trapped underneath the leaves?
My ideaof pearling is similar to a diffusor in that small bubbles rise from the leaf. What I can often see in my own tank are large bubbles underneath Anubias etc which are just like the...
I would be surprised if it was supposed to be noisy. My EX700 was pretty quiet when I originally had all the media in it.
I have mine in a cupboard under the tank with no padding under it and it only gives out a slight hum. It is in fact quieter than the MP400 pwerhead!!!
Andy
The ones you received are not the ones pictured in the ebay advert. Although they are advertising as Large the picture is of the Nano version hence only 1 sucker point on each pipe in their pic. Yours are larger and therefore have 2 sucker points.
As for the angle. The current Cal 'efflex'...
What we are saying is that if your tank was 100litres then you should aim at a filter that says on the box that it's max throughput is 1000litres per hour (10x)
This 1000lph is what the filter is capable of pumping when it is empty and the hoses are non existent.
Then once you allow for the...
Although wew are all quite surprised at the actual lph of these filters being around the 50-60% of advertised lph, it seems to be most externals (including Eheims) and not just the Tetratecs.
The 10x lph is supposed to allow for this reduction in flow anyway (as far as I know)
