That kind of lava rock would be fine for plecs and other softbellies. It is the 'honeycomb' sort of Lava rock that is like a ball of razor blades that is more of a problem.
'The range' sell bogwood really cheaply. £1.99 for your usual 10 - 12" pieces. £12.99 for some monster pieces. Then you can find a few pieces that you can use together and mix with cobbles where they join / overlap.
Not trying to be nit picking because the above points from yourself Graeme and Viktor are valid but they to me are from an NA perspective.
I think Aquascaping can encapsulate so much more than 'replicating' or being influenced by nature itself. I think it can be so much more to the point where...
Maybe a 'planted tanks/aquascaping for dummies' style book and a seperate one as Vol2 which moves on a little more advanced.
After all people are more likely to buy the larger book thinking it's better even if the leaflet does have all you need to know :) Just looks more credible even if most...
I agree with Viktor. A contest does not mean Art.
I just wrote not 10 minutes ago on ASW about how if these competitions are Art then they should remove the judging criteria and judge the scape as a whole.
Meaning there could be one scape that everyone agrees is far above the rest however...
I don't think we 'need' or are 'looking' for anything new. I don't try and do new things TBH. I do see new things though.
Like all traditional Artists or music. there doesn't 'need' to be something new. However every now and again something just happens and its a big bang.
There didn't...
I still think the main thing separating Europe scaping from Far East is the use of lighting really. The white look as if it is a misty day beyond the scape etc.
Maybe something they are begiinning to add into their style as I see it more and more these days in the far eastern setups.
Andy
They are old rules Luis however it is NA that pushes them in this hobby.
Dutch tanks don't use rules of thirds or triangles. they can be very symmetrical. Jungles can be whichever way you design them however I would say Most jungles are either enveloped into NA because they are landscape...
I was using Lady Gaga as a way of saying one person's view of 'Art' is different to another's.
Lol. Its a decade (or 2 old already) Al styles can be on the internet and has no rules? Set a scape up not following the 'golden rules of thirds, triangles etc' and see the replies :) Set it up...
I'm not so sure about that. I think you can see things on the internet or in a book and implement something. It takes vision though and also courage.
Whilst people are all quite friendly on the net or face to face it is unlikely that all are so full of praise away from it and for an...
Indeed. I am not knocking Amano at all. I think his work is great however let me use this 'anaolgy to explain what I mean:
I think Lada GaGa's music sounds like the same song over and over again, just with different words. She also makes sure that as soon as one song starts to fall from the...
Lol. I've been slated heavily for describing some aquascapes as looking like model railway scenery. Not naming people but there a couple of aquascapers that everybody seems to think are modern gods where every aquascape looks like it should have 00 gauge running through it.
However another...
TBH I don't hink much is going to change. All of the above are only progressions of the style that has dominated the past decade or more.
This is the style that wins the big competition so everybody sticks with it.
If we are talking what style will become more popular rather than what...
Chintz? Britz? My lounge is very modern, very minimalist but there would be zero chance of me putting that setup in it even if I could afford it.
Looks OK for an ultra modern cold industrial style office but even then I would prefer something much sleeker :)
Of all that lot I would probably...
I'm not so sure they'll take off. Not in a huge way at least. The dimensions remind me of those coffee table tanks that everyone used to slag off!!!
I wonder if the coffee tables will re-appear on mass if these sort of dimensions do become popular?
AC
No 37 was the one I picked out as my favourite. Later found out that Amano also gave it his top marks too :) Maybe I do have an eye for this malarky if not the hands. lol
Look where the main rockwork ends. Looks like it as the very back of the tank. And then look through the arch. Looks as...
I don't mind someone taking my little portion. I can wait for next time. Will free up a little extra for my Portugal flights. Blooming expensive this year!!!
AC
Forget the hardscape additions Mark. Your skills are in the plant choices and positioning. Anyone can buy hardscape, a few can get the hardscape right. Not many can envision the way the plants will fit like you do.
AC
Thats Chinese Whispers I'm afraid. That rule does not exist.
The rule is that unpublished work must be entered. i.e. If you setup the camera on a tripod and take 2 identical pictures then put one on all the forums and the journals then the remaining 'identical' photo remains unpublished...
No but pallet boxes/crates and all other sea freight tends to go into containers for the journey.
Even courier companies that send internationally like Parcel Force will use containers for sea freight and then at the other end it will be seperated again.
Therefore James' supplier's container...
No probs. I didn't notice you had 'corrected' me. Looking back through still can't see it
I used to ship stuff out to africa/asia and we always put crates/pallet boxes into containers. Was expensive even then but still much cheaper than airfreight.
AC
Thomas McMillan: (not sure how many) branchy bits, 20-40cm.
Tonser: lots of bits up to around 70cm (happy to help with shipping if needed).
Steve Smith: tiny to medium 5 - 50cm :)
sam clowsley: 15-30cm straighter pieces :D (about 12-15 if possible)
Glenn Eldridge: 1 big peice up to 70cm (a...
I think the whole plan may have people backing out if we are just dividing the costs. Better to do it proportionally to how much each person wants but that may mean 1 person has to make the initial outlay
When I started Celestial Glade I used some large limestone rocks from the Garden to hold the redmoor down in the first 5 weeks. I didn't have fish or inhabitants for those 5 weeks so I didn't test but I did notice that there were a lot of small 3-4mm 'chips' that had come off it as weak seams...
OK the latest version. I have added some of the rocks that I collected today. I have used some of these rocks in 'Nursery Island' so this is more of a tester to see the effect with real rocks rather than grey shapes
My first impression is that they look good BUT...
... I need to...
Lol. Mine is really starting to bulk out at the moment. I'm aiming to have a little more open room in the water column of the new scape. Try to restrict the needle ferns a little etc.
I'm actually anticipating a lot of mine being moved on. especially a lot of the needles.
Thanks for the...
I think there are 2 ways of doing Crypts really. If you can afford it to densely plant and then it almost instantly fills in after the new growth comes in. If you can't afford it then the patience game is best.
I think getting the Anubias/Crypts on/within the rocks is going to be quite...
What about this. Still want to do similar to the previous scapes but using lots of smaller round cobbles to blend into the wood. I can then plant Crypts in/through the gaps and Anubias on the rocks. I want to give the Anubias a chance in the setup whereas before they hit the glass quite early...
You'll have to get your Mum to drive you over here when you're ready for fish. I'm getting a spawn weekly from the Black Corys now!!! Will be going cheaply compared to the LFS (If you ever see them in an LFS ;)). lol
AC
Different Tetras like different things. Neons and Cardinals need cover. They will swim about in the open water but is better for them to have somewhere to 'hide'.
Generally most fish will swim quite happily in the open water but IMO it is often the knowledge that they have some cover to get...
Thats one reason why many tanks in this style use fish like Harlequins, Killies etc. They are top dwellers and are used to 'open water'.
Maybe also a reason for the new rule added to the ADA comps on scape suitability for inhabitants.
AC
Garuf. Look forward to seeing your ideas. No moss though please  Rock is the only addition really as I am using all the plants and wood from the current scape with a light coloured fine gravel on top of the existing Tropica once I've syphoned a load of sand off of it. Pleanty of time to...
I'm thinking of February/March for the change. I want to get the 'right' rocks so I will get a selection each time I am at my Mums and can walk around the nature reserve. I also want to get 'Nursery Island' up and running first too :)
This will of course still be a jungle scape and pretty...
The problem is that the needle fern is doing so well that as it runs almost the length of the long piece and is also on the left bit towards the rear that it blocks out so much of the light to the bottom!!!
I am trying to keep the look but turn the tank on its end if you like so that the bottom...
I don't mind putting stone in there as long as it fits in. The only thing I don't really like about Nature scapes is th monotony of looking at 20 similar tanks. lol I quite like the current Saintly, GF style where it doesn't look like they are try to recreate landscapes underwater and look...
After I have got my nursery tank scaped I am thinking of rescaping my 125Ltr which is currently 'Celestial Glade'.
Not a costly change as I will use virtually everything (plants, wood, substrate etc) but quite a different look hopefully.
Here is how 'Celestial Glade looks at the moment to...
I am quite aggressive when seperating all my glassware so must be quite lucky in not breaking any
It's more the disconnecting pipes, etc that does my head in. I try to leave it longer these days but sometimes it just catches your eye every time you look in the tank (which for a bored...
It does look good Dave. Quite liking it's 'wild' feel.
I also like the dirty lily bend :) I get carried away every time I see more than a 'little' dirt in mine and of course that means a full on hour or more cleaning session which I always wish I had waited longer to do
AC
That last one reminds me of 2 things...........the second thing is the dodgy graphic display that comes on windows media player if you turn it on!!!!!!!!!
AC
I see what you mean with the first one. That does look good and clever thinking too.
To me the second just looks like a reet mess and the third very false, meaning looks handmade and not natural. I don't like that triangle at the front. It seems to be an attempt to do what the first scape...
When I wanted mounds in my last scape I used the Tropica to make the mounds and then the sand on top of that. Worked fine until the fish levelled it out a bit. However with rocks on top of the mounds the fish can't level them
AC
George has said exactly what I was thinking albeit in a very 'well spoken' way ;)
The first thing I noticed when I saw your pic was the rocks. Not the type of rock etc but that they all have exactly the same gap between them, almost mosaic!!!
I have to bow down to the others on the rest...
Original Tropical are as nasty pink as pink gets and thats from someone who has a pink light on all the time mostly on its own!!!
This is what I call a pink light (Realux T5HO 30W 4500K):
This is an original Tropical (T8 4000K)
You can see in the second pic that although there is a daylight...
It's a bit harder than you imagine. In nature the plants that will grow emerged don't have a hot light directly above every day like with aquaria. They do of course have the sun in nature but its not every day and not 6 inches or so above the plant.
things like moss will more than likely dry...
A lot of plants will do this given the chance. Trick will be to get plants that don't overwhelm the underwater section whilst getting to the surface like Nymphea.
Bacopa Caroliniana is a good one as it will maintain it singular stem.
AC
Whereabouts is the Undulata? I can't see it although maybe it is still quite small. Mine are approx 12inches tall nowadays.
If you don't like things close to the glass (oh dear) you wait till Crypts start appearing at the very front miles away from where the 'mother' plant is. lol
The 2ft...
Sorry Zig, I have a few more questions matey. lol . Hope you don't mind.
Theres no mention of heating in this tank. Did you use any heating? (Trying to gauge how much equipment you had inline really)
Also with the old '10x' filtering that is usually used I notice that you used a filter with...
Zig - Congrats on the scape and the result. Not often anyone from this side of europe gets anywhere near as close as you did there. All the pics in this thread are great seeing it in action so to speak and also to show others not to despair when things go bad etc.
That inline diffusor looks...
I am in agreement on Syrah. I loved that scape.
I also like Planters lusty Glaze. Maybe the photography but superb scape IMO.
I like all of George's so no point listing them all. I have said before that George has such a crisp, fresh and unique style and is undoubtedly an awesome grower of...
I think everyone knows my opinion on the far east stye. Its been done, and done again, and done yet againetc. lol
The first link is just far too gimmcky with the house and figurine for me to like. nuff said there.
Surprise for you:
I like a lot of the scapes in the second link apart from a...
With tanks that small I would ditch CO2 injection and just add the excel as the CO2 source. If you want a cheaper version then aquaessentials.co.uk sell a product called EasyCarbo which is half the price for the same product.
I think the little mountain scape is made up of "mini landscape...
redmoor shouldnt have any tannins. are you sure it is redmoor? Soaking redmoor is to remove its bouyancy rather than to get rid of tannins.
I would think the scum is just from the surface of the wood. Change the water weekly. Redmoor can take 2 weeks or 2 months to sink properly dependant...
It means he does like myself, George and many others do. He unsticks the suckers and raises some of the Lily pipe above water level for non photoperiod (one third above and 2 thirds below) which brings in loads of O. He leaves the filter on.
I actually leave it like this permanently, the fish...
I suppose the moaning about TA will be me. lol sorry but each to their own etc, he he.
Mine are basically all long term. First was 7 months and was me learning what to grow and how to grow etc. Then rehashed it and tried a proper scape which lasted 8 months (was cut short by a 3year old and...
Yippe - no heating cables. Now you can look forward to exactly the same amount of growth as you had before. lol
Good luck. I think the hardscape looks good (from what we can see ;))
Andy
After much reading about redmoor (first time I've had some) I weighted it down in my fishless tank with a view to leaving the rocks sitting on it for 4 weeks and then stocking.
Of course I am itching to stock and was wondering if 4 weeks was right.
It has been in the tank now for 18 days.
Andy
Saintly that makes me 2 months 'wiser' than you . lol
Bought my first ever aquarium in November 2006 and started with plants in January 2007.
Worth a go especially if it is free. I'm off to buy some childproof padlocks.
Andy
No-one answered the 'how much does it cost' question. lol Can someone please? Then I can start saving up for it next year (if I don't suffer any more disasters between now and then)
Andy
A bit of a camp name but I'll go with it for now. lol
This will be the 35Ltr Nano I have been planning since October last year.
I was trying to do the whole project for under £150 including tank, all equipment, plant and livestock! but am finding it quite hard so I am revising my budget to...
Clever tanks and skilfull scaping there but a little pointless IMO. Most likely I would knock it down the back of a table or stand on it bu accident or something.
Plus I like tanks to have a nice stocking in them.
Incidentally what would these sizer tanks be called? They are not even big...
I prefer the second one. A tree growing out of a mountain looks strange to my unartistic eyes (that got a B in Art GCSE and C in Graphic Design GCSE!!)
(Not that GCSEs mean anything. lol)
Andy
I think the english style is green glass and black furry leaves judging by the number of posts on it. lol
As in football we seem to have fallen behind and now we need the foreigners to take us back to the top.
Although I see some of you have already caught up with the rest, as always the rest...
If youre going to use the bath then make sure the plug is properly sealed and put some dechlor in it well before the fish go in.
Would be better really to take your water from the tank and transfer it to the bath so that the parameters arent such a fluctuation to the fish and then once you have...
Looking at the first pic in this thread I thought to myself 'That filter looks massive. lol)
As for the tank you seem to have turned it around. The plants look a beautiful green now.
I think too many people complain about TetraComplete and say its rubbish. I used it in my last setup and it...
I know you only posted it on APC earlier today but very good comments so far (speaking too soon probably. lol) I'm soo surprised. Normally I think that looks good then scroll down to see many posts of aquascaping snobbery. lol
Maybe my eyes are working properly and I am right for a change in...
Its the scenery for the next Lord of the Rings movie......What do you mean they've done all three....Wake JRT up and get him to write the 4th.
I love it.
There are so many tanks using this style with the rocks and the HC and the path but yours looks superb. very realistic whereas others seem...
This isn't a disagreement. you are insisting you are right when you know nothing about the other tanks in question and you call into question the ability of the tank owners to assess their own tanks.
I for one may not be highly experienced in planted tanks but Zig is and I would take his word...
