Hi Bert, when I first started in this hobby 3 years ago and adding co2 I used exactly the same JBL bubble counter - all was well for a while, but i soon discovered the rubber O ring soon looses it's seal, I replaced the unit with a second one after the first failed and this was ok for a few...
If it's the type that Foxfish has kindly shown you then the normal installation of one would be on your outlet and mounted about 5" from the filter itself - having said that some people mount it on the inlet side of the hose so that is dissolves the gas and churns up the micro bubbles even...
You will normally know when it's due a clean as what tiny bubbles you can see in the display will get larger and hence go straight to to surface quicker and not time to dissolve.... Meaning lost co2 - I normally clean mine every 3-4 weeks.
Yes this how mines running, much better for viewing and co2 dissolved a little more :) the only thing I do is just clean it a bit more often, but that's a good thing.
Going on my readings which are co2 on at 2pm and off at 8pm (lights on at 3pm and off at 10pm) my pH readings start at 6.8 the drop to 6.2 by 8pm - it really depends on how much plant mass you have in the tank that will use up the co2 injected in - on mine at say 8am the following morning my pH...
My needle fluctuates if I sit and watch it.... I put it down too that its doing it job, basically controlling all that pressure behind it - if I sit and watch the bubble rate that is very constant though. If you are using the correct co2 piping and have put half an inch or so in boiling water...
Yes it sounds to me like your pressure is to low, I've ran mine before at almost 4 bar to get a nice constant bubble rate... Up the pressure and see what happens... At worst if there is a leak it will find it quicker, but I'm sure it's just low pressure related.
Gurgling from a filter can be a number of things - trapped co2 gas or if your plants are pearling like mad then extra oxygen bubbles... it will work its way out eventually though... but can be a little annoying.
What I normally do if I have this is after opening up the filter for maintenance...
Yes that's what I meant - if you have changed it then, should be ok. Try putting your co2 on and then with it on place your bubble counter in a bowl of water so it is totally covered, it could be the seal gone... If so you will see it leaking.
If you have any inline valves (which you should) and if they are the cheaper plastic type, then they can be prone to causing problems - I was using the very cheap clear plastic type last year and they caused my co2 to stop getting through, I looked like the co2 had melted the valve! I swapped...
I was using the up atomizer for over a year and found it OK, I have just switched over to the Easy Aqua Super Mist Atomiser which I've located right under the inlet basket - I have found it sucks in at least 95% of the CO2 mist given off by this diffuser and by the time its been sucked in...
Maidenhead Aquatics do some smokey/clear.... Same quality as the Ehiem stuff really... Depends what your preference is...? Well that's what I use anyway.
Yes, I bought one of these from AE last week - a fantastic bit of kit and seems very well made and great features, ive just set mine and let it get on with the job... also more great service from Richard @ AE
Is it the timer though? I have what sounds like the same unit, a D-D regulator and solenoid and sometimes mine will fail to go off with the timer. At first I thought it was my timer playing up so I invested in some good quality ones, this was a year ago and I still have the same problem?
When...
I am not sure then mate, but if you are getting change of color in the DC it sounds like the solution is working OK and I'd say you have nothing to worry about.
What a fantastic and very interesting read! I have to ask where did you learn all about this? I have read many of your threads now and they are always full of great information and VERY in depth
Can anyone advise me if it is OK to fit the up atomiser on the outlet tube before an external heater? I'm struggling to fit it all in my cabinet if it has to fit on after the heater :(
I removed the bio balls from mine and filled it with 'sera siporax' I have noticed only a tiny amount of loss on the flow... I don't get any co2 bubbles at all in the display now - I have noticed you have to pump more co2 in the reactor though and I'm running at 4BPS now on my 180l
I fitted an AM1000 a few weeks back and I use 16/22mm hose - all you have to do is hacksaw the 12/16mm hose tails off, I then secured my hose with 2 jubilee clips - works perfect
Try 'The Green Machine' they have some and in every color under the sun - I had some last week and its tough stuff!

I am also just about to start using a AM1000 Co2 Reactor, I have opted to use 'Sera Siporax 15mm' how much would you fill the unit up with this though? about 75% or right to the top?
Hi Tom,
I don't think that will last very long at all on a 260l tank - you maybe better using a 2kg FE. I was using a Dupla 1000g on my 180l and I was lucky if I was getting 3wks! I guess it depends on how your tank will be planted though.
I switched over to a 2Kg FE and I got two and a half...
Yes corner tanks are a little difficult to get right and I know just how you feel!
The way I have mine at the moment and it seems to be working is spray bar left side with the addition of a koralia pump just below it and pointing downwards to help push the flow along, very similar to ‘Ian’s...
Hi,
Can any of you advise me on how long you would expect a 2kg to last on a 180litre tank?
I am running 3 x 24w T5's on 7hrs per day - co2 comes on one hour before lights and goes off one hour before lights out.
Cheers, Gary
Do any of you think that if I could mount my spraybar at the back of the tank so that its firing straight forward, towards the front of the glass that it would work allot better than the spraybar mounted on the side.
Thanks for the info Steve, So is it best to leave the spray bar spraying out horizontal, or do any of you point the spray bar to fire down into the planted area?
Hello everyone,
I wondered if some of you might be able to help a newbe out here.
I have a 180 litre corner tank, which is almost 700mm deep. I am running an external filter (Eheim 2075) with a inline atomizer from eBay. I am using the eheim spray bar mounted at the top left of the tank...
