You could add crushed Lava rock or gravel.....adding over a period of a few weeks. Purchase some Sagattaria Subulata or Helanthium bolivianum "quadricostatus"...these are really fast-growing and will help stabilise the substrate. Remove any waste vegetation do regular water changes and clean...

Tropica substrate or plant soil? Which is dark brown spheres?

Tropica Soil or Powder! https://tropica.com/en/plant-care/aquarium-soil/aquarium-soil/ The powder has smaller sized pellets for use in Nano Tanks! Or you can also use it in the foreground to blend in the larger Tropica Soil. hoggie

    Dust - ugh!

Yes, It does seem to be a bit dusty near the substrate! It doesn't look as though its broken down completely though, which would produce a lot more dust. Only things I can suggest is siphon as much out as possible using a tube with a intake strainer as you don't want to disturb the substrate...

    Pebble capped soil substrate

I don't think he used a lot of soil....plus the plants he used involved Epiphytes/Moss! Therefore, not too deep substrate planting. I would use a Seachem gravel...then top with larger sized gravel/pebbles....even this may mix if you start messing about with it after planting! hoggie
  35. G H Nelson

    Pebble capped soil substrate

Should be okay to use the above mesh as a separator! If you want low maintenance and want to use soil this would be my suggestion! I've used ADA topped with Seachem red gravel and it eventually mixed with the ADA! hoggie
  36. G H Nelson

    Pebble capped soil substrate

Hi Andrew Gravel will mix with ADA Amazonia and Tropica aqua soil....as it heavier than soil! You could always purchase a large pond media filter bag and cut it to fit over your Aquatic Soil! Make cuts or holes where you wish to plant....insert the plants. Then top with gravel!.....;)...

Hi HC has short root structure....its prone to lift. Your probably better to try and get the HC to grow emersed first...into a soft sediment...high in nutrients.
