Brown unhealthy plants in low tech

My low-tech 30l CRS cube has been set-up for about 2 months now and is fully cycled with 20 CRS shrimp. A lot of the leaves are covered in what looks like brown / diatom algae. Seem to be a lot of mixed messages about how to cure (as with all things planted tanks). Could this be from not enough...

Need plant ideas for new 30L tall!

Glad you like the look of it. There are so many plants, as your just starting out you will discover more and more plants available and more are being discovered all the time. Then you have to decide which ones you want to try and grow. That co2 system is an utter waste of money my friend. I...

Need plant ideas for new 30L tall!

Save it for a High-tech. You can do it with almost any moss. I would say Java, Flame or Fissidens Fontanus are the three best mosses to use. Personally I would use Fissidens, I saw it in a scape the other day and its stunning, especially in a nano. It grows really dense as well. Mini Pellia...

Need plant ideas for new 30L tall!

Probably a good idea. Fissidens Fontanus looks amazing as a carpet. It is best to and easiest to attach it to a mesh yes, then it is all attached and you can move it if needs be, pebbles can be awkward to wrap the string around etc. That is true, However it will be considerably slower and will...

Need plant ideas for new 30L tall!

Anubias can look great in a cube. Ferns and crypts. A moss carpet is probably the most realistic with that small amount of light but with light carbon its achievable. dwarf hairgrass would be slow but you could try it. Can always think about upgrading the light in future if you want quicker growth.

    Tips how to attach moss

Fishing line is generally the best thing to use. You could try a mesh to hold it on. You may be using to much fishing line or tying it on too tight. Use as little as possible to secure it and just give it time. Mosses are pretty slow growing.

    Flame Moss Wall

Yeh go for it. Java moss is the easiest to grow of all of them probably. Go with whichever one of the three that you like the look of though. I would seriously consider co2 though.

    Flame Moss Wall

That looks like flame moss to me. Most mosses will grow without co2, just much slower than they would with it. In your tank setup you could probably achieve it, just very very slowly. Here's a link on how to create one. http://www.aquamoss.net/How%20to%20crea ... 20wall.htm

Hairgrass really not doing well. Advise Please?

Thanks. How will flow and movement around the Harigrass help it grow quicker and healthier?

Hairgrass really not doing well. Advise Please?

My Nitrate levels are at roughly 10-15 mg/L and phosphates at roughly 5.0 mg/L. So not that low. All my plants are doing well and so I don't think there is a shortage of those nutrients in the tank. I dose a quarter of a cap of Nitrogen and Phosphorus once a week. I was keeping nitrates...

    Turning my Plants Red?

Mike, Why do you dislike the use of high lighting? All of Amanos tanks use high lighting and most of the pro's as well. why only medium lighting?

    Turning my Plants Red?

Also, on the seachem websites recommended dosing chart it shows not to dose your tank after doing a water change and adding the Adic buffer. Instead it says to dose the following day. Is this a good idea? the thought behind it maybe being time for the tank to settle after doing a water change...

    Turning my Plants Red?

So many mixed opinions on everything its tricky deciding which is the best thing to do. I think I will just go with what I said I will try in my last post. They seem to be the right steps that I need to take to get things back to there redish colour and keep them that way. More and other...

    Turning my Plants Red?

The BGA problem is gone now, so dont think thats a problem as I have a very clean tank and good flow. Surely high light is a good thing, as all pro and high tech tanks have high lighting and it is only just over 1W per litre which is the recommended amount, especially for plants that require...

    Turning my Plants Red?

I think I need to revise my dosing scheme anyway, dont think im dosing enough Iron as I just had a look at the rough guide on the seachem website. I have a lime green drop checker. The BGA has all gone now. You think keeping nitrates at a good highish level keeps BGA down Mike? I may try...

I have some Rotala Indica in my tank + many others and recently added some amazing bright purple Alternanthera reineckii. How to make my hairgrass carpet, spread and grow quicker?

Re: How to make my hairgrass carpet, spread and grow quicker I planted it by taking the main clumps that it came in and separating them into much smaller little clumps then planted about 1 inch apart. Well surely with 63Watts of light in the 60 litre tank that is enough light for it to carpet?

How to make my hairgrass carpet, spread and grow quicker?

Re: How to make my hairgrass carpet, spread and grow quicker It was emersed in the LFS when I bought it then planted it in the tank without water and filled it up along with the other plants. Hi Everyone, I have a heavy planted 60L tank and have mainly hairgrass covering the front. I have recently taken some plants out of one of the corners and want to grow something smaller, I was considering a type of moss on rock but then thought I could have a little patch of Utricularia...
