    Littorella uniflora

I've grown Litorella uniflora in every which way now; hard water, soft water, low tech, high tech, low light, high light, blackwater. The one environment where it performed best and actively grew, was the low tech, low light, softwater environment. It did take a while to get going though, like...

    Red tiger lotus not growing

A week is no time at all for a lotus. It can take much longer than that before it springs into action. As long as the bulb still feels firm it's likely just settling into its new environment. Give it more time.

Oh yes, looking at pictures it does grow quite like that emersed. Today I learned!

    Dense carpet maintenance

On the right you can see Helanthium tenellum 'green' (tissue culture from Tropica) grown in low tech. It does just fine in this scenario. I've not trimmed with scissors because I like the grassy look compared to the shorter Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, but I've heard this is possible. I've only ever...

    Moss recommendations.

These are some absolutely shocking pictures but my lights are about to go off. I'm keeping the moss just under the water line, lightly curtained by the floating plants. Some of it is emersed too.

    Moss recommendations.

I recently started keeping Plagiomnium affine AKA 'Pearl Moss' in a low tech tank and it grows quite well. It has a more finer look to it compared to Java moss.

Adding house plants to the aquarium: is it really this easy?

In my experience, if it's naturally a vigorous grower it usually works (there are exceptions!) This is the small list of 'houseplants' I've tried that worked; Tradescantia fluminensis (As Mort said, it was literally snap and dip and the plant handles the rest) Monstera adensonii (Also snapped...

    Plant storage

Hi Phil, when you say horror stories of buying online where are these plants being purchased from? I purchase plants online all the time from the likes of Aquarium Gardens, Horizon Aquatics, Scaped Nature and K2 Aqua and have never had an issue. Also rather than storing the plants, you can...

    Java fern trident question

Hi @.craig. from my experience with trident fern, you can cut it back to the rhizome without much issue. As long as the rhizome is intact it will regrow. Trident fern has a way of being seemingly slow to grow but if you look at progress photos it is actually growing fairly quick. In my...

cryptocoryne spiralis 'tiger' V cryptocoryne spiralis 'red'

Hey Wooki, I don't think it's a fair judgement because one has access to a bit more light than the other but it shouldn't be wildly different. I've had the crypt red a couple of months and it grows large (about 40-50cm) with wide leaves (4-5cm) and quite fast for a crypt. Probably a new leaf...

cryptocoryne spiralis 'tiger' V cryptocoryne spiralis 'red'

Hi Scott, yes they are different. I have both of them and they'll grow differently depending on the environment but my Spiralis red is a light red colour with a green vein, almost looks like a candy. The spiralis red can also display a veined pattern so it's a fair enough confusion. My Spiralis...

Red stem plants that don't require nitrate limitation?

The mini super red does very well to stay red without nitrate limitation but even the mini leaves are too large for the diorama scale. I'm hoping the Rotala pulls through because that type of leaf size and structure is perfect. Thank you though! I appreciate the suggestions.

Red stem plants that don't require nitrate limitation?

Thanks Toby, I've actually got lots of it growing emersed so I've taken 6 stems (as of last night) and submersed them to see if I can get them red. Let's see what happens. Thanks Michael! To be honest I've never actually done nitrate limitation myself (except on a windowsill) and so I don't...

Red stem plants that don't require nitrate limitation?

Hopefully you guys can help me. I'm looking for a stem plant that will be red without nitrate limitation e.g. Ludwigia Super Red. However, the leaf size of ludwigia is too large (it's for a diorama contest tank), so I'm looking for something similar to Rotala if such a thing exists. Any...

    Recommendations for a small leafed lotus/lily . . .

Ok cool, yeah that's what I do. I only asked because I actually keep some red tiger lotus as an 'epiphyte' on some Manzanita wood. If it's any consolation I have Cryptocoryne Balansae in my setup and it's been there since end of February. It did absolutely nothing for weeks except the old melted leaf. It's only now just very very slowly started to elongate. I noticed it melted most if not all of the original wider leaves...

    Need some help !

Hey Jason, Those rounded leaves is Rotala in it's emersed form. It's not unusual for them for melt away as the plant transitions to it's immersed form. You can trim away the dead leaves or just allow them to fall off naturally.

    Plant ID - Thinking Rotala?

Yeah it's true, there's a lot to consider when things like this happen. In terms of the algae, there's a mixture of things that have caused it and therefore the plant is just 'getting by'. I'm doing a rescape today! Fun times. Should do much better in the new setup. Thanks

Love the look! I've got a similar island layout being setup at the moment and I'm planting about 6 different species in the back! I'm a fan of the 'tidy jungle' look. Granted your tank is smaller but I think you could get away with 3 or even 4 if you played your cards right.

    Red tiger lotus, nymphaea,

I could be wrong but I don't think you need to fertilise if the tank is only 1 week old as it's still cycling. Re: the lotus, I've got one and I haven't noticed it being sensitive to temperature change. Ensure that the bulb isn't completely buried. I wouldn't bury it further than 2/3 of the...

Hello, I have this plant in my scape and it used to grow right to the top of the tank (2ft). Now it stops at around 10 inches. I did one big trim a few months ago because it was so large. Apparently these plants can be trained to stay small by regular pruning. Does that mean it's now...

I'll comment on here just in case we are accused of thread hijacking lol. In terms of fertilisers, by far the cheapest, most effective and easiest way is to use dry ferts.
