Trying a Caradina CRS tank in a slightly different way

In my experience using an active substrate to breed CRS massively helped. I first started with RO and inert sand and lots of botanicals, and I didn't get any breeding, not even saddled shrimps. Once I switched to aquarium soil, I had hundreds of shrimp. But it's not to say it can't be done...

What unusual shrimp are you keeping?

Wow, they really do look like mini amanos.

    Bloody Mary shrimp

If it's any consolation, I bred a whole colony of Bloody Mary shrimp from 1 female and 1 male. Just after the female got saddled the male died so I was extra worried but they pulled through and I never had to cull any, the colours on them were amazing. As @Wookii said, it's best to diversify...

    Bee Shrimp Challenge

Just throwing in my 2c, I would recommend using RO or very low TDS rainwater for top ups because topping up with water that has mineral content will increase your TDS (and possibly KH/GH depending on the source).

    Hydra strategy advice

It's not something you need to remove. You add the dose of Panacur and you'll notice results within 24 hours. Usually after a couple of days the hydra will be all gone. I have no idea why people are dosing multiple times in a week, unless their tanks are plastered with hydra lol.

    Hydra strategy advice

Anytime I've had hydra I did one dose and that was enough. In fact I just did a dose yesterday on my new tank.

    White stripe of death.

I think I read somewhere this can occur through some kind of osmotic shock if parameters are changing too fast (e.g. water changes). I was facing this issue and started doing my water changes more slowly and never had the problem since. That's the only thing I changed. Give that a go maybe...

    Red cherry shrimp grade?

Hey Nathan, I think you could class those as Sakura. They look similar to mine, although mine don't have the orangey stripe but I know what you mean. But take a look at this image, you can see them better in person so will know more accurately.

Shrimp acting weird in botanical setup

Thank you, I will keep an eye! I won the leaf litter from a competition. I think it was originally from Crowder's Aquatics but other than that I'm not sure if it's origin. I boiled and drained the water and then boiled again until it sunk.

Shrimp acting weird in botanical setup

I just did a 50% water change and they've all started acting normal again almost immediately. I'm wondering if I panicked prematurely. No new plants added.

Shrimp acting weird in botanical setup

I'm wondering if anyone can help me? Yesterday I rescaped my planted nano and turned it into a botanical style. Only epiphytes and leaf litter. This morning I've noticed some strange behaviour from my shrimp. I found loads of them desperately clinging to a piece of floating plant I added, as...

    Cherry shrimp breeding

Apologies Idris, I don't mean to hijack the thread but @jamila169 when roughly do the sexual dimorphisms become apparent? It's been a few years since I've bred cherry shrimp and my recent shrimplets look all male, kept them at 23c almost exactly. They are only 4 weeks old though.

    What's this worm?

I'm glad to hear this, I just spotted one in my tank tonight. I literally swore when I saw it 😅

Beneficial snails for the planted tank

I'm also thinking about ramshorns now after the good reviews from others. I used to have Nerites but I couldn't stand the little white eggs being laid everywher. They're not easy to remove either!
