    Fish arriving DOA, freezing cold

Only my personal opinion but given the freezing temperatures I would have cancelled the order and asked for a refund or a credit note. At least until the weather gets warmer.

    Fish arriving DOA, freezing cold

I’ve never liked the idea of buying live animals by post and doing so in this weather is surely going to be a death sentence for many.

    Can air pumps stress fish?

My air pump goes on and off on a timer with the lights. The fish don’t seem to be bothered.

    Can air pumps stress fish?

You could try one of these, the bubbles are much smaller than normal airstones and may help? https://www.aquaristikshop.com/aquaristic/Sander-Lime-wood-diffusor/268300/

    Panda Cory tank size

It depends on what plants you plan to have and how many. I’ve got just sand in both of my tanks by I’ve got mainly Moss and Anubias which are easy to grow.

    Panda Cory tank size

I’ve got some Panda’s in a 60 litre cube and they’re doing fine. I know some disagree but I think substrate is import for them to be at home. I love watching mine rooting about in the silver sand in my tank.

    Fish Hiding

I’ve had Corydoras eggs stuck to the glass again today. This has happened at least 5 or 6 times that I’m aware of.

This is the tank at the moment, I have 4 Sterbai and 1 Panda plus some shrimps.

    Fish Hiding

I have six Corydoras in my 60L and I very rarely see them, they constantly hide. I’ve been thinking of scrapping this tank and getting a larger tank that is landscaped in such a way that they cannot hide. Would this be a bad idea? At the moment it’s pointless having them in my current tank as I...

    Fussy

I bought a few Corydoras a couple of weeks ago so I had to get some supplies. I haven’t seen them eat anything yet but I’m hoping they like at least one of these. Are there any other dried foods folks have found that Cory’s like?

    That was a waste

When I first kept fish in the 1980’s Tetra used to sell a dark brown coloured concave section tablet you could press on the glass. All the fish in my tank used to go mad for them. Tetra do sell “stick on the glass” tablets but they’re not that keen on them.

I have some of those on the way! :)

    That was a waste

I bought a few Corydoras Sterbai last week and in anticipation of this bought some Fish Science Corydoras Tablets. The shrimp in the tank seem to eat virtually anything but even they won’t touch it. Watching the Corys reaction on approaching this food I think they’d be saying “Yuk” if they...

    Corydoras

As I said earlier I’ve ordered a 60 Litre “cube”. https://www.pro-shrimp.co.uk/aquariums/225-dennerle-nano-cube-60l-aquarium-4001615058611.html Which is considerably bigger than a 1 foot cube?!

This tank is far too bare for my liking but I like the look of so many different types of Corydoras all swimming together:

    Corydoras

I’m aware of that so I started this thread first: https://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/open-area.60220/#post-591033 Sadly I’m getting conflicting advice on numbers. On here 6 is bordering on too many and on another catfish site they’re saying I can keep over a dozen. Unfortunately it’s a moot...

    Corydoras

Asking on another forum it seems I may be able to have more than I first expected so I think half a dozen each of a couple of the smaller species may be possible. Yes, I like Panda’s Darrel when available for sensible money! :)

    Corydoras

I was thinking of getting perhaps half a dozen smudge spot Corydoras if they still have them in the LFS but I’ve just seen more than one tank online where folks have had one each of many different species. What do you think, good idea or bad? It’ll be for a 60L cube so I guess I can only have...

    open wound on female discus

I had a fish with an injury on its side. I removed it from the tank and carefully patted the wound dry then applied Aloe Vera gel. The wound healed within a few days.

Can Cory live in my water?

Just as important is the substrate. They ideally need soft sand. Anything too rough and it can damage their barbels leading to possible disease.
  26. Aqua sobriquet

    Bronze cories

I should have added that Corydoras are one of my favourite fish and I was very taken with some “Smudge Spot” Cory’s I saw in my LFS. I’m thinking of setting up a 60L Nano for some.
  27. Aqua sobriquet

    Bronze cories

Ideally you also need a soft sand substrate to prevent damage to their barbels.

    Poorly Cory

It’s worth getting expert advice but for what is worth: I’ve had worse than that heal after treatment. I netted the fish and gently patted the area dry with kitchen towel. I then applied a good coating of Aloe Vera gel as a temporary slime coat. Maybe I was lucky but the fish was fine after a...

    Flatworms

I wonder if Corydoras would make suitable consumers of these pests? :D
  30. Aqua sobriquet

    Flatworms

Are having fish in an aquarium the solution to flat worms like Planaria? I ask because many years ago I had a 50 gallon tank set up for about 10 years and never had any problems with worms. Maybe any that hitched a lift on the plants I bought promptly got eaten by my fish?

Dennerle Scaper's Tank 55L: how many German rams?

A very rough guide I’ve heard many times over the years is 1” of fish per gallon. This is normally for community tanks though with relatively small fish. https://www.firsttankguide.net/capacity.php

I’ve kept several “Sharks” in the same tank and they’ve been fine. They do like to chase other fish but I never had any fatalities due to it. They are very nice looking fish.

    Bettas

I took a trip out to a Fishkeeping shop I haven’t used before a couple of days ago. I was surprised to see over a dozen Bettas each in their own separate cell about 125mm x 100mm x 75mm. Each cell had a small moss ball in it. This seemed to me to be pretty cruel, what do others think? I didn’t...

    Cory Illness

Your substrate looks far from ideal for Corydoras. Soft sand is best but you can get away with fine gravel provided it’s not sharp. https://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/fishkeeping-answers/articles/whats-the-best-substrate-for-corydoras

Oto's, are they eating my Willow Moss?!

The willow Moss in my Nano is not growing as well as some I have in a trug in the garden so I was wondering if my Oto's are munching on it? I'm putting Algae wafers and other green stuff in but perhaps they prefer the moss!

    In praise of Oto's

They've started on the Cucumber now. They seem to like the boundary between the skin and the flesh.

    In praise of Oto's

Bit worried, they don't like Algae wafers or blanched lettuce. Just put some blanched cucumber in, any other suggestions? I suppose I could grow some algae on some stones outside.
  47. Aqua sobriquet

    In praise of Oto's

I've never kept these before but many folks reckon they are really good for keeping tanks clean so I bought 4 for a newly setup Nano and they're doing a really fantastic job! Not sure the exact species, just one of the "stripey" ones! I'd like just a couple more and the Zebra's look nice...

    Which small fish

Wow, they look nice. Thanks very much for the links. :D Sure they're big enough to eat the worms though! I had considered a 35L Nano too small for fish but expect a couple of those would be ok with a few shrimp?

    Middle Swimmers?

Still at planning stage but tank will probably be around 80 x 45 x 45. Black Phantoms sound good, thanks. Not seen any locally but Black Neons could be an option as well.
  55. Aqua sobriquet

    Middle Swimmers?

For a Corydoras aquarium. Any suggestions? I wouldn't want anything too bright or large to detract from the Corys.

Fish - Plant Safe Ground Feeder?

Corydoras are nice fish and real characters just make sure to buy at least three or four, preferably half a dozen if you can. I've seen some lovely Sterba's in the shops recently: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.ph ... terbai#top
  57. Aqua sobriquet

    How well can fish heal?

I've had success a couple of times with fish that had nasty looking wounds on them by drying the damaged area gently then applying pure Aloe Vera gel. At the very least the gel seemed to act as a temporary slime coat. Not sure it would help with fins though!
