Can you post a picture of the tank with the new light please John. You can get adaptors on eBay that turn a Euro into a three pin plug. They’re not much bigger than an ordinary plug and better than using the shaver type adaptor...

I don’t think prices will go down on high end equipment, I think some of them will go out of business when more people realise they don’t actually need to pay so much. Freshwater is most definitely not behind saltwater as far as I’m concerned, we just don’t need the same type of equipment luckily.

If I had deep pockets I could easily have paid £400 for a light for my Nano. I don’t think it would make my plants grow any better. I’ve just bought a £9.99 security type light to try out at some point, until then I’ll continue with the £3.28 lamps.

As I said at the start this is about growing plants, not illuminating reef tanks that can require seemingly very high light levels. I’m guessing reef tank owners have probably fewer options than we do to use cheaper lighting?

It’s more the depth of the water that will determine how bright your lights need to be, at least for small plants near the substrate.

The Warm white ones I've seen didn't look that good to me. I’m running a cool white COB spot on my Nano and it looks good. I have easy plants like Anubias and Moss and they’re growing like mad.

I'm getting a bit of green Algae in one of my tanks but I can’t turn the lamp down. I’ve ordered a dimmable LED COB lamp to replace it but I now need to get a dimmer. Any recommendations for a 220V dimmer? The photo period is normally about 8 hours so I could reduce this as well if needed.

It’s for a low tech tank without CO2 so I guess this type will be ok. I could use the 14W Aluminium one linked with a little modification. It would be for a 35L Nano Cube.

I’m planning on keeping the Eheim on the 10L Nano in the picture, it’s at its lowest height. The 12W lamp will be used on a 35L Nano. It’s just a truck of the lighting, there is no substrate it’s all sand! :)

I’ve yet to get a proper light fitting but I’ve just jury rigged something to see what it looks like. A is an Eheim 7W COB LED and B is a cheap 12W 6000K COB lamp from China. The 12W is not surprisingly brighter but the colour doesn’t look much different to the Eheim. What do you think?

If You’re on a tight budget check out the LED lamps on the auction site, item number 173837703013. They are only a few quid each and available in three different colours, 3000K, 4000K and 6000K. I bought one of the 12W ones and it’s quite bright.

I have one of those IKEA lamps in my workshop and I really like the light they give off. It would be interesting to see the actual spectrum (is that the right word?) they give off as they are good value for money.

I've tried several GU10 fitting LED's in our Kitchen and found the cool white very blue, warm white is yellow but the daylight bulbs tend to be a bit pink which should make plants look nice.

They should be a direct replacement but some suppliers say not to mix them with conventional lamps on the same fitting but I have! Don't think they are dimmable either?

I think plants respond best to the red and blue ends of the spectrum so maybe just swap out some of the blue and whites for some red ones. Should look better to the eye as well.
