Mmmmmm, not really sure about the plastic clips - might be excess parts, don't recall them in my tank package. That little wire tool thing, think you might be right re: impeller tool. The filter size sounds like a great Xmas bonus :) I have the 106 on my tank. 206 is going to be great with all...

Yes, the little LED provides a good amount of light. You might want to experiment with the height to find a sweet spot for your tank. Another optio and something I did was to put frosted vinyl over the light to reduce the intensity - this worked well too. No problems with cable lengths of the...

Your amount of substrate sounds pretty good and should work well - I have somewhat of a rock wall that separates the top level and the front areas of the tank, can remember exactly how much substrate I used but your figures sound right. In terms of the pipes, I've never had to access them so...

Hi, not actively around the scene - but the tank is still going strong. Running complete low tech now with weekly 50% water changes. Tank is really good straight out of the box to be honest. Really simple and straight forward. The tank as it is right now (needs a water change...)

    New 'silicone less' tanks?

Just got some more info: "These are paned glass construction not single piece and so won't be costing £2K as ADA do. The construction is under testing and does use a very thin bead of silicone, but not as a bonding necessity and so the use of silicone can be minimised so much so, that the bead...

    New 'silicone less' tanks?

As far as I know the ADA is a single sheet of glass molded into a tank - this new zero bead style is still a tank with 5 panes of glass joined but not using any silicone - but I could be wrong.

    New 'silicone less' tanks?

Oh really? Where did you see this? Only thing I've seen that is similar is the "ADA Cube Garden Superior - No Silicone" range.

  28. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Not much to report on this. Just being doing large daily water changes, 50-60% at the moment. Problem is my first water change created a slight 'mud' situation. Last night saw me do a 80% water change to help clear things up. With the back chambers I'm looking at using this area to grow some...

Circulation pumps: shape of the flow

Just re-read this - if you simply increase the diameter of your plumbing you will decease the velocity of the flow but not the amount of water you're moving. Eg, pump as 25mm output, connect this to 32mm or even 40mm output plumbing. But this is talking in terms of closed loops, sump returns etc...

Circulation pumps: shape of the flow

The Vortech MP range by EcoTecarine would have the widest flow path. Other pumps to consider include Tunze (their wavebox provides big water movement instead of direct flow). You could like at the Jebae range of MP pumps for a cheaper alternative and of course there is the koralia brand too...

    Hi no Yama

Happy to report that Hi no Yama is now flooded, filters running, co2 checked and now I just need to set the timers. Going to blast the tank with large amounts of co2 for the next few days to give the Monte Carlo the best possible transition to immersed life. I only had a few floaters when...

    Eleocharis sp red

Interesting. Surely to ensure its survival a company like tropica can acquire some for propagation?
  50. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

I didn't heat the tank initially, heat was provided by the internal sump which ran at 30c - humidity was too much, lack of air flow resulted in mould. Think I'm going to skip the DSM with the Monte Carlo and go flooded as soon as I've planted and pump in a ton of co2 ;)
  51. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Thanks, the lack of air inside the setup well may have been the reasons for the mould.

  55. Curvball

    Which Stem Plant?

Generally no, pressurised co2 is the best way to get co2 into an aquarium.
  56. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Thanks. DSM was stopped due to mould, lost all the HC. Jumping in with the HC was probably my own fault, a little too ambitious too soon into my planted tank career. Tomorrow the tank will see some Monte Carlo - might suit my needs (and lack of experience with plants) better. Will post some...

    Hi no Yama

    Hi no Yama

Thanks Ali. How many pots of 1-2 Grow would you recommend?
  67. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

DSM failure. Going to order more pots, plant and flood. I tweaked the lighting set too... So the question is, do I spend money on the same pots I got from Aquariumgardens - good price although the plants weren't as substantial as depicted on their site or do I opt for the more expensive 1-2...
  68. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Thanks - yes, read those threads, think I've read just about anything and everything DSM related now :) The EC solution is extremely weak - but here is hoping it will have a positive effect... Will update this thread when I have more to report.
  69. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

This morning I've removed the cling film, drained the rear sump chamber, cleaned panes and drained some of the water from the display. From a bit more reading, I've misted the remaining plants with a dilute solution of liquid CO2 to see if I can kill off the mould spores. Going to leave it...
  70. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Thanks for that. Think I've just over complicated things.
  71. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Haha, no problems. In terms of flooding this... Well I need to see if I can get the HC to really settle in first. If everything succumbs to mould - will get new pots and skip the DSM route.

    Hi no Yama

Thanks guys - have switched tactics on the DSM, need to see how it goes for the next few days. Must say, this growing plants malarkey is slow going - I was growing corals faster than this ;)
  76. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Further reading and researching is leading me to believe I'm over doing the humidity within the tank. I've now ensured there is a decent vent in the clingfilm. Will monitor the situation for the next few days and see if the HC bounces back. If not, going to have to get a few more pots and go...

Overview of the system showing the sump area and the condensation.
  78. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

The tank inside is probably around 22-23c - a touch warmer than the house. But it is a complete guess. As mentioned previously the sump area of the sump is circulating water and this is heated to 30c to provide the humid environment.
  79. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

DSM day #9 and mould has crept in. Have lost about 1/3 of the HC. Anybody able to offer any input/advice at this stage?
  80. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

Slow going... Nothing new to report
  81. Curvball

    Hi no Yama

The rear sump area is circulating water set at 30c - this is providing the humid environment. From what I can see the substrate is constantly damp and the rocks themselves show no signs of drying out - with that being said it appears as if everything is going ahead as planned. HC looks good too...
