My moss project is currently 'enjoying' a period of zero human interference! I've been so busy with work etc that it's been massively neglected. Just having a tidy up today and some of the mosses are looking very healthy and growing well, others a little sorry for themselves. I've had to trim...
Thanks Hoggie, that's pretty similar to what I have already (although mine is a windowsill version). Thought I'd take a step up to something a bit more fancy. Plus the controllable versions can crank the temp up to 25+.
Equipment aside, was wondering about the science behind warmer air for...
I've been tinkering with a small moss project for a few months.
Growing Moss Emersed 6 Months In | UK Aquatic Plant Society
I'm seeing increased growth recently after months in the cold on a windowsill in an unheated/neglected building.
Before it 'warmed up' I placed a few mosses that had...
I'll get some pics, although it's just a windowsill and a variety of jars, tubs and propogators scattered around the place.
I've now ditched all the jars with moss in water as I'm away for extended periods and I'm struggling with algae.
Back to just emersed.
My emersed set-up continues with various arrangements (different/no substrate etc) and a few of the types I've struggled with now in a small heated propogator.
The jam-jars *were* getting daily water changes, but the job can interfere somewhat with that plan. Just back after being away for 10...
again, with some allowance for my lack of technical-talk.....
Anchor moss. One of the fastest growers, a lovely dark green
Willow moss. Slow growing, but a very vibrant light green
Mini Java. Good growth and again with a nice dark green
Peacock Moss. Excellent growth, somewhere between my...
A new job has resulted in me scaling back my fish-keeping to almost non-existent levels, but about 6 months ago I started trying to grow different mosses emersed.
Plastic plant trays with lids, sitting on a windowsill, just plain old tap water added (never more than a centimetre on the bottom)...
Not sure if links are allowed, but you can get wild caught Brevis for about £12.50 each from Mike's Rifts. They have normally paired off already (even if not spawned yet). Brevis are probably the best bet if you want plants of any description, multies will dig down to the base of the tank no...
I have pairs of Brevis in 30 litre cubes. You can have plants as well as they're not prolific diggers like some shellies. The only thing is once they are ready to breed they clear the tank of existing fry (whereas others might raise generations of fry together). I have 2 cubes for my pairs -...
I have big groups of Ember Tetra and Emerald Eye Rasboro in with what should be a pleco tank. A few shrimp managed to somehow get moved across when the tank was set-up and now there's loads so a good % must survive as shrimplets.
Had a day pottering about today. Firstly delivered a tank to Katfish, then homeward via Weald Aquatics, a concession at a very swanky garden centre (coolings green & pleasant). Shop was tidy and clean, but nothing spectacular. Could have been a small MA but for the branding.
Then off to Living...
I've been told one was "Spicy Moss" (I presume he meant Spiky). Think he said the other was willow, but I was in a rush as my shrimp had been in a cooled plant van all day, so wanted to get them home, warmed up and acclimatised.
Saw a group on ebay and thought I'd keep an eye on the auction (was 99p starting bid or £400 buy it now).
Being a cynical old bugger as well, I had a nose around who is bidding (although much of it is hidden these days). A couple of the bidders have only bid on that item - suppose that's...
Truth is you can breed and sell 'regular' bristlenoses easy enough - might only get £1 or so from the local shop, but go in there with 50 or more and you've got the same proceeds an an L046 which might never happen (and will have cost a whole lot more money & time to get that far).
I still...
Pesky thread!
Was in the fish-room thinking about what I could shuffle to make space for a group! Trouble is, I have the attention span of a gnat so watching them grow over several years from juvies might be a bit of an ask. Having said that, the years seem to be going passed much...
I'm trying to grow mosses so when I want some for shrimp tanks I don't have to buy more.
In a moment of boredom today, I popped into my local MA branch as not been there for years (Chipperfield). It's an absolute joke, the place is crying out for modernisation. Anyway, the branch is part of a...
I've seen juveniles at a "very reasonable" sub-£80 - as many as I want!
I asked why you don't see more breeding groups (as presume people buy in numbers for just that) and he said it's a time-thing, they take a while to grow and settle. Think he said something about 3 years from...
I have an account with one of the food manufacturers (for own use), and enquired about perhaps buying a bit to re-sell, but I wasn't allowed to sell cheaper than RRP as it "devalues the brand" (or something like that).
Anyone? If you need better pics/submerged or whatever let me know - I can try. Suppose it doesn't matter in the bigger scheme of things, but interested to know.
I cleared one of those Garra Rufa spa shops for the official receiver and they had 6 of the inline heaters running horizontally. Had been that way for 7 months without problem (other than no one using the spa  )
I asked a friend (who has a shop) to order me "a mix of mosses" with his next plant order, and today I picked up the whopping THREE items that arrived  Only he's gone on holiday and they weren't marked so I have no idea what they are.
First one was a nice 20cm piece of slate with a thick...
Congrats to you both. I took my GCSEs in the first year they existed. With the exception of this year, grades have risen every year so I'd be a straight-A student if marked now - sadly I wasn't at the time
I asked a friend if I could piggy-back his plant order from the Netherlands and asked to get small portions of different mosses. Saw him yesterday and asked if my moss arrived "nope, but you can have this"
I'm trying (without much success) to grow some mosses, so that each time I set up a...
It's a white & blue LED, for some reason everything looks blue in the pics (taken on a ropey smartphone)
This seems the fastest growing - another angle
Another tank with a plant just coming through
Then this one with reddy/browny kind of leaves, some appear to be struggling a bit
I have some very basic shrimp tanks. Substrate: Akadama on some, Fluval shrimp Stratum on others, bit of moss and a few plants (no idea what they are but picked from a 'shrimp friendly' list), no co2, no ferts (other than bit of shrimp food/waste), and several tanks under a cheapy Hong Kong...
They look excellent. I had some of the stackable terracotta wine racks in with some fish before, and used to email the manufacturers asking for 2nds (as they are pretty expensive). Now they do a small range of fish caves etc.
You could offer to pay into his bank account and then even pay for postage direct (with collectplus or similar). He'll just need to drop it into a local shop which uses the service.
Not gonna help Johnski get his parcel, but Royal Mail are rolling out the 'leave with a neighbour' idea nationwide after a 'successful' trial - altho you can opt out if you wish.
Hope your parcel eventually arrives safe
I thought they only delivered up to midday on Saturdays. I've had a few deliveries come after 5 in the week (normally when I'm on the phone barking at someone), but don't think so at the weekends.
Not sure if there's one on the forum, if not it would help noobs like me!
If that's ok, please add to the thread and I'll edit the post to list them all at the top.
DI - De-Ionised
FE - Fire Extinguisher
GH - General Hardness
KH - Carbonate Hardness
pH - Percent of Hydrogen ion (H+)
RO -...
Pretty sure I had the same tank (it's probably in the shed, I'll dig it out) and one of the braces was wobbly (I guess from being picked up by it). I cut it off with a razor blade and hung net fry traps over the back. Simple tank with water and a sponge filter, but no problems. I've also got a...
You're allowed to travel over borders within the EU to buy fish as 'pets' without restriction (for the most-part), so I imagine you must be able to move what you already have within the same.
I looked in there a couple of times after I joined (but before I'd posted) and never saw anyone.
What about having a set time, ie Thursdays 8.30pm when folk can log on and try and get some momentum to the feature.
So... I can add 'growing moss' to my list of plant-life failures
I drained the tank leaving a few cm of water, sprayed and covered. It looked pretty humid and moist, but came home and the moss had been frazzled by the sun. I'm glad I can keep fish alive as appear to be hopeless with...
Thanks for that, I'd like to get some different mosses growing as currently enjoying a shrimp-keeping phase of the hobby. I already have a few (no idea what) but they've not grown much beyond the original 5cm pads they arrived on!
The alternative would be to have it on my water-prep container. The same container but re-filled several times a week with tap water. I guess no nutrients other than what's in it already, but I've seen some people with plants in water-prep so must be something in there to find.
I emailed to ask if he was listing more and he has another ebay ID  Here's a link to one of the other auctions http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180931003783 I think there's also another ID selling moss balls and plants, so looks like ebay closed down number 3
I have some floor-standing plastic fish tanks (670 litre tubs used for importing fruit juices etc), and was wondering if this would work.... (there are fish in the water)
A small hydroponics tray sitting on top of the container (at a slight angle). Fed by an airpump (or maybe small...
I have some very basic shrimp tanks (sponge filter, mosses, LEDs, akadama/fluval shrimp stratum) and one of the tanks appears to have some hair algae. There's been a little bit on top of the sponge a while, but today I spotted it growing around one of my moss patches. I have other tanks under...
Good shout - do they come individually labelled? I bought a load of different mosses from ebay (not same seller) and launched them in my shrimp tanks - but no idea what's what! Would like to know so can see which ones (appear to) do best.
well, the wife's away for a few days (visiting MY parents  ) but I did notice a bit of algae already on the wood today.
If I go emmersed, does the wood just sit on a bare-bottomed tank or should I provide a substrate for bugs and stuff? The lid currently has holes drilled, should I cover...
I think if I go emmerse, it'll be a covered tank with a shallow water level to keep the humidity up. If they stay interested in the submerged project for a while (managed about 3 days so far!) then we'll think about project #2
I nearly fell out with my good lady a few years ago as had 2 outbuildings as fish-rooms. The rooms are now a utility room and a kids playroom - and not a fish-tank to be seen anywhere at home. I have a little unit on a friend's farm with my fish, but earlier this week I got one of 'those looks'...
Hi guys, I'm Nick, been a member a little while, but thought I'd post and say hello.
Fishkeeper all my life, bounce around different niches in the hobby, but always been wary of bouncing into the planted tanks niche! I'm currently enjoying some very basic shrimp and moss tanks (in a very...
