boiling water is probably the safest option, just need to have a pan big enough to leave the rocks in.

yeah i agree with mark, get some otto's and shrimp in asap, they do amazing amount of work in the tanks.

so its working ok then? is it producing tiny little bubbles now? good thing about doing like this is that the powerhead also blows the bubbles around the tank instead of them just floating upwards to the water surface.

a way i found to creat tiny tiny bubbles was to put my diffuser under a small power head, so the bubbles get sucked into the power head and then gets chopped up even smaller. its working a treat for me at the moment.

quick question for you lot... my misses has gave me permission to get another tank to go in the living room, so the space i have is... 33 inches in length 16inches deep heights not a problem but not to tall. so.... where would be the best place to get a quote for a tank that size? or anyone...

anyone on here every go to cruise hill for their plants? when i used to do marine tanks, i used to be up there all the time and i've just remembered from a few years back that there was a few plant shops up there. so... anyone on here go up there and whats it like these days?

its not harmful at all, as long as its washed well before going into tank. giving it a good wash also removes the dusty parts of it which is a good thing. but once the smell has gone, your good to go.

I had the same problem with my newish setup, what type of algea is it your getting? a thin browny colour? and has your blyxa drooped and gone brownish with fuzzy algea on the leaves?

moss you'll be fine, but riccia might struggle abit. either way you'll have slowish growth under a T8.

What are these HOT5 865 tubes i keep hearing about now? i cant seem to find any info on them.

im currently using a fluval 205 in my 2ft x 1ft x 1ft 60 litre tank, but i dont think the flow is enough, so im going to buy a powerhead, would 6000 l/h be to much in a tank that size? do i need to go smaller?

even hold luggage gets checked mate, im assuming when you say hold luggage you mean hand luggage? the smaller bag which you can keep with you on the plane? that gets checked and put through the scanner as well.

Last time i went on a plane (4 months back) my hand luggage was put through a scanner like everyone else, and im 99% sure your not allowed liquids in your bag which have been opened. so depending on what kind of tub your using with water inside i'd be careful as they may take it out to look. and...

I hear what your saying Spyder about the order to import stuff not being so good, BUT after looking at their feedback i was really impressed, nearly everyone on there says very quick delivery and plants in great condition.

It can be abit tricky to get hold of, but alot of garden centres or bonsai shops still sell it. its even for sale on ebay, but not sure how much you'd be after.

currently without spray bar, i would use a spray bar but cant find any for the fluval 205. i see loads of d.i.y spray bars but they look nasty.

Sand alone CAN work, but i believe alot of plants prefer to feed through their roots, if you look at the example of using aquatic soil, no dosing ferts or any root tabs, and the plants thrive due to the goodness inside the soil. as Alastair said, keep dosing correctly and running c02 and see...

What plants are you trying to grow? and when you say your using sand as substrate, is it simply just sand alone? sand has no CEC so your plants will struggle to feed through their roots.

chilled, i've just noticed your attempting to grow HC in a non c02 tank, all i can say is good luck and if you pull it off you can come round mine and attempt mine. honestly though, its almost impossible to grow HC without c02, unless of course your growing it out of water.

using glycerine your not going to slow down the c02 going into the tank, you'll just get a wrong reading to how many bubbles your producing. plain old tap water is your friend when it comes to bubble counters. and as the previous said, if it was producing to many bubbles with water, you need to...

the easiest way to work it out is just run water through it, you'll soon see which way it goes.

Re: The journey begins... All depends on what your budget is. as Callum said, if you can afford the ada soil then go for it, if not, then akadama is also very good. there is loads of chose from, its just what you prefer.

just plain old water from the tap. its only to count your bubbles per second, none of it goes into the tank. so water is fine.

what external will you be using? my sister has a rio 180 and struggled to get water movement around the whole tank so she got herself a small powerhead, and it done the trick.

Is there a certain reason why your only using cold water and then warming it up? as the others said, just mix hot and cold from the tap. unless of course your using your own R.O water.

I cant answer that because im not an expert on lighting, but can i ask why you'd use a desk lap over a tank when your using things like amazonia soil, pressurised c02 and ferts? i know you can get decent clip on lights but not sure about a bog standard 40w bulb.

I've never fed my otto's and never had any problems with them. i was told before i got them that if you feed them, they can become abit lazy, so i never bothered. and my tank dont produce much algae either. but their doing fine so far.

as lemsip said, it depends on your lighting and c02 but there are lots to chose from once you confirm your lighting and co2

i went past my local plant shop today and noticed they had for sale, big bunches of hemianthus, i didnt have time to go in and ask about them, BUT... is this the same stuff lots of use as carpets in are tank? if so, could i buy a few of these bunches and put them under water? they look exactly...

its not the sinking i cant deal with, its the dirty brown colouring that it leeches for weeks on end, it drives me mad. the sinking part is easy to get around.

im assuming there would be no leeching either, and would it be ok to attach moss etc to the branches?

ADA amazonia is really good stuff, i cant tell you to much about it as i dont use it myself, wish i did now though, but last night i was at aquatic design in london and the amano team was there setting up a show tank. and they used the ADA amazonia and the bloke said you can add extra ferts etc...

i've just washed a whole bag worth of thomas cat litter and yes its small greyish looking coloured, but i bought a 8litre bag and im so surprised at how much im left with after giving it a good wash. after soaking it for 4 hours, i then mixed it all up and continued to rinse it with my hands...
