TMC Sig 600 Twinstar 600s Sump build

Hi, As a sump user, I can tell you that you want to a) make sure to prevent a break in the siphon tube of your overflow during a power outage, and b) you want to have a quiet overflow/sump. The first issue is managed with an air pump that will turn on and pull the air out of the siphon tube...

What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 - Bacterial imbalance

SF, thanks for reply. How did you arrive at boiling your aquarium from my words?? I didn't say that. My point is simply 1) minimize chances of BBA getting into your aquarium and 2) maintaining your water parameters and golden equilibrium will result in any algae going away. It is true that...

What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 - Bacterial imbalance

Guys, while I appreciate your remarks, I'm scratching my head because it seems to me you have taken my comments out of context in your replies. In fact, I think we are saying the same thing, right? Maintaining good water/fertilizer/light/CO2 parameters is key. My simple point is that...

What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 - Bacterial imbalance

Hi everyone, Interesting read and thought-provoking. Here are my thoughts: The study of symbiosis between algae and bacteria is still evolving. There are about 200 different species of freshwater algae in the division Rhodophyta There may be many species of Black Beard or Brush Algae (BBA)...

Yoghurt/moss dry start - going on vacation - can I leave it without spraying?

In case you face this again, I use a fog maker on a timer sitting in a water bowl. For a two week vacation, I would seal well and then put the mister in a bowl connected to a timer so that it goes off for 2 minutes twice a day. This will keep the humidity up and prevent drying up.

    Aquarium sections (substrate and sand)

Hey Vador, In my experience, the only real way to keep them separated well is to use something that divides the two and is invisible (as much as possible). I use thin plexiglass that you get at your local home store and is easy to shape with heat. I did a pro tip on this in case you're...

    High tech, low tech

Hi all, A little late to the interesting discussion but I thought I would throw in how I view things. To me: Low tech = low levels of technology in the planted aquarium Mid tech = medium levels of technology in the planted aquarium (most hobbyists) High tech = high levels of technology in the...

Going Dutch by the book - tank sponsored by Tropica

Pedro, I'm watching with interest. In my experience, the Dutch style is relatively easy to do conceptually but extremely difficult to do well in practice and long term. Diligent and masterful trimming will make it the Dutch style. Less than that and you end up with what I call a fruit stand...
