    Emo

I like post-punk, punk rock, ska ect. Some of my favourite bands at the moment are the Lawrence Arms, Cobra Skulls, Against Me!, Hot Water Music, the Bronx and Ska-P, LaGrecia, Bayside and Jets to Brazil. I don't know what grind is (feeling silly, should I?) I don't know any UK bands really as I...

    Jobs; What do you do?

BigTom: 3 year or 4 year PhD? Have you got 'the fear' yet? I have but it is sadly manifesting itself through displacement activities such as coming on here in the middle of the day (don't tell the boss!) Are those the mice that eat the seabird chicks alive? Or is that somewhere else?

We have a lab saying, "Once you go mac, you don't go back." Sadly my home computer is a PC, maybe if I didn't spend so much on 'scaping I'd have money for a macbook pro *dreams of shiny happy future*. To answer the initial question, I'm a posgrad researcher in X-ray crystallography which is...

    Help too much BioLoad

Get a gravel cleaner. I never realised how much rubbish was in the gravel until I bought one. I always thought they were a bit of a gimmick and was happy with the wafting/syphoning technique until I got one to see what they were like. The difference is amazing.

Reaction to the Fire Extinguisher Thread

I have also been on a gas safety workshop and don't see the problem. The only thing that worried me is that the age of the regulators people use tend to be older. At my work we have to chuck them every five years- even if they have been unused. And this is a problem not specific for FEs. I...

Ready To Throw In the Towel

Here's a cleaning tip: Use a razor on the glass (unless its acrylic), it's so much easier than scrubbing and it'll get the GSA off easily. Its strangely satisfying scraping it all off! I break the safety plastic of cheap orange bic razors although plain blades are better for corners.

I've just finished a gas safety course at my work and another reason given for not using PTFE tape was that it can be used as a bit of a fudge, letting people use something that really isn't fit for purpose anymore. As soon as you start messing around with a regulator and modifying it in any...

I worked out 6.25g for 1ppm and 18.75 for 3ppm. My working went as follows: Molecular weight of KH2PO4 = 136.08, MW of PO4 is 95 therefore the free phospahte would be 136.09/95 = 1.432 Therefore 1.432 in 1L would result in 1000ppm PO4 stock solution However you need a different stock that...

I completely agree, everything has risks and I find that msds are usually worst case senarios of the 100% chemical. Does anybody here use glutaraldehyde?

    Does anybody here use glutaraldehyde?

I planned to do an aldol reaction using acid not alkali because it will be easier to make an acid at home that will not take part in a competing reaction. What's in AE excel/easycarbo

Assuming it only contains glutaraldehyde and water the effective dose for algicidal properties is 0.1 to 0.5 ppm. Assuming the highest effective ppm dose (0.5) is used and the liquid is diluted 5ml per 100 000ml as stated on the bottle. This results in a dilution factor of 20000. So 20000 x 0.5...
