Any Betta breeders in the UK?

Hi all, Does anyone know of any reputable Betta breeders/stockists in the UK (preferably near Wales)? I'm looking for a plakat male Betta for my 10gallon but dont fancy buying from a LFS or online tbh. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Soft water is not required. Only a handful of plants “need it”.
  3. Fred Dulley

    Algae on Christmas Moss

I completely understand. After all, the fish are the main reason we are in this hobby. Perhaps increase the CO2 but raise your outlet to promote good gas/oxygen exchange. The plants will also photosynthesise more with an increase in CO2 and therefore produce more oxygen.

    Algae on Christmas Moss

The drop checker offers a guide but really the limitation is dictated by the tank inhabitants. If the plants and algae indicate you need more CO2 then you either need to add more CO2 or decrease light intensity. A lot of folk will adjust their injection rate to the point where the CO2 is at a...

    EasyCarbo max dose

Personally its not something I would want to overdose. Even at the normal rate I'm convinced it melted my Cryptocoryne Usteriana whereas every other plant seemed fine. I'd rather look at other alternatives, another water change in the week, clean out any mulm in the tank or filter, ensure flow...

50% weekly water change is killing my shrimp?

You could keep doing the 50% water changes per week but pump/siphon the new water into the tank over a few hours rather than dumping in. I know that a few shrimp “experts” do this.

It was going so well.... Cherry Shrimp die off

I've heard of ottos eating baby shirmp and also Dean from Aquarium coop has talked about a method of his where he gives ottos some baby brineshrimp to encourage them to breed.

It was going so well.... Cherry Shrimp die off

Very rarely is it anything in the tap water unless its from a bore hole or something. That product provides trace elements (micro nutrients) to the plants. As long as its not overdosed itll be fine. It contains nutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper (very small amounts so dont...

Sorry to hear that. If they're still dieing I'd be doing water changes every few days just in case it is water quality.

Unopened old bottle of trace elements

Hi folks, I've just found and opened up an old tub of TNC trace elements. Whats the chances it is EDTA Chelated and can be used in a DIY all in one fert? I'll be buying the necessary Ascorbic acid. Thanks.
  13. Fred Dulley

    RO or not to RO?

Totally up to you. Not that it matters but your tap looks moderately soft, similar to mine. RO will be more costly and wasteful. I'd personally stick to the tap water. Many folks do. The idea of using perfectly clean water via RO and controlling what hardness you want is an attractive thought...

It was going so well.... Cherry Shrimp die off

If water quality is fine (ammonia, nitrite, copper etc) then it leaves chemical contamination (as suggested above with sprays etc), predation or disease. I'm not sure how disease could be identified or treated but I was surprised how many different types of disease shrimp can get after listening...

4 year old tank with low PH no KH

Test kits do have an expiry date I believe. A new pH liquid test kit could give alternative results. As you said, the fish seem fine so I wouldn't change anything for them. If you do however want snails and shrimps then increasing both the kH and GH isnt a bad shout. As with all things, little...

Can you have too much flow?

Ah yes I see. See if you can scrape off as much as you can and remove any infected leaves.
  26. Fred Dulley

Can you have too much flow?

Your frustration is perfectly natural. If you didnt have BBA before, but you do now, it sounds like the BBA is a result of fluctuating levels of CO2. The plants struggle to adapt to the changing levels. If you dont have one already, try get hold of a drop checker, 4dkh solution and bromo blue...
  27. Fred Dulley

Can you have too much flow?

The only reason Id reduce flow is if the fish were struggling or pinned to the glass. Other than that...the more flow/distribution the better. Make sure your CO2 is high enough and that it reaches approx 30ppm before the lights go on. Best to manually remove as much BBA as you can. I agree with...

Hi everyone, Does anyone know of a powerhead pump that is somewhat safe for shrimps (cherry)? Ive noticed thread algae always crops up in the same place and it must be due to low flow. I have a Koralia1 somewhere from back in the day but I never used it for a tank with cherry shrimp. Thanks!

I don't understand. You're adding Mono potassium phosphate and then wondering why you are getting a phosphate reading of 5mgl or more? Exactly. Every once in a while some new story will crop up about the dangers of aquariums but comparatively to other areas in life, they are safe. I saw one episode on "How clean is your house", and they reccomended wearing rubber gloves when cleaning the tank. Go figure!

But that's not neccasarily because its too hot but rather the nutrients and CO2 werent enough to cope with the increased plant metabolism.

    Witnessing a Natural Death???

No it doesn't. It doesn't prove that nitrate was the problem at all. I agree that at some point a toxicity level will be reached and studies have been done before. Fish (dont remember the species) showed ill signs at 400ppm or near about. Shrimp 120ppm. 1. Nitrate test kits are utter rubbish...

    Temperature

Generally warmer waters will have a positive effect on the metabollic rate of the plants. I think someone once said on here that a plant in 28degC will grow 10x as quick as a plant in 18degC (assuming CO2, nutrients etc are equal). Higher metabolism demands more CO2 and nutrients. Colder water...

    BBA and liquid carbon

Still havn't addressed the underlying issue. BBA tells us that we need to pay more attention to our CO2 levels/distribution. You may put SAEs in to mop up the BBA but the plants are still potentially suffering from carbon deficiency. Beautiful tank btw. Reminds me of a terrestrial garden.

    Pond Protein Skimmer?

No it wont work. Protein skimmers only work in tanks with a specific gravity of 1.006 and above. Saltwater "froths" up easier than freshwater. The pollutants in the water need to adhere to the bubbles in order to be taken out.
  82. Fred Dulley

Aye, very annoying. Tell them/the manager that it's good to see some staff caring but they are going over the top and should do some of their own reading on the web. Having a good plant biomass and large filtration will certainly allow you to keep more fish than perhaps a normal tank. The inch per gallon rule is a little tight though in my opinion. I mean come on, 8 Neons in a 72litre, that's too too cautious. I think it's good for beginners because it...

I'm sure it wont beat Apogee but a fairly reasonable indication on PAR would be awesome. I wonder what the pH range is for the Reef version because our planted tanks wont be anywhere near 8.2, so we might not get decent results. Not that pH matters in the scheme of things.

  92. Fred Dulley

Growing HC in Volcanit by Aqua Medic

Well, something is telling you it needs more of something. Structural failure points toward not enough carbon (40% of dry weight is carbon). Lack of colour and stunted growth can be lack of nutrients. HC is very nitrate hungry.
