    RE: My association with PlantedBox.com

On Sunday November 14, 2010, Mark and I decided together that to better the future of PlantedBox.com and Mark Evans as an Aquascaper, PlantedBox.com needed to close its online shop. I've been involved in PlantedBox.com since day 1 when I first approached Mark with an idea and concept to...

How long would a 500g or a 2kg cylinder last?

I've run at least 6bps on a 60 litre before. Use a drop checker to measure co2, never trust BPS as it can vary from bottle to bottle.

    Aquascaping World Magazine November/December Issue

More the most part, I agree. PFK is aimed at the general hobbyist and people new to fishkeeping. But as Andy says, lets not even try to compare it to the likes of ASW magazine or AquaJournals as it makes no sense. iirc, Mr Amano stopped printing his magazines in English because there is not...

    Brown algae

I agree with Paul, but I would also remove at least one bulb from the light unit and shorten the lighting period until you get on top of things. Only then should you think about increasing the light again. Get some Ottos in there to feast on the brown algae too :)

So many problems I don't know where to start!

Tbh, that last tank looks under maintained and past the point of saving. Plants aren't healthy, and they wont recover. A thorough clean and new plants would be recommended. A short light period and good maintenance is the key to any tank ime.

Inline diffuser VS In tank diffuser

The problem with this is, it doesn't work on all filters. Many filters tend to trap the tiny co2 bubbles until they form one or two very large bubbles, which then gets released in one go causing a co2 imbalance and/or waste of co2. Filter media may be mostly to blame, especially when using...
  30. J

Inline diffuser VS In tank diffuser

Too much surface movement will gas off co2 quicker, but as long as its not causing a slash I think you'll be ok. I'd imagine you'll be able to watch the co2 flow pattern when setup and tweak from there :)
  31. J

Inline diffuser VS In tank diffuser

Its not that they are bad, but they aren't as efficient as inline. Most of the co2 from a glass diffuser will head straight for the surface and gas off. When its inline, the micro bubbles follow the flow from the external, so they tend to loop around the tank, remaining underwater for longer...
  32. J

Inline diffuser VS In tank diffuser

Inline will always be better than an in-tank glass diffuser imo. Many people like to show the glassware off a little, but otherwise I'd avoid them. An inline reactor would be even better as it dissolves most of the co2 before it reaches the tank.

    Aquarium Cooling. Fans?

The Dyson fan is amazing... shockingly overpriced atm though  Think about it though, you'd cool down sitting in front of that Dyson fan, wouldn't you? Moving the stale air at the top of the tank (which is also heated by the lights) should give you a drop of a couple of degrees at least...

    Aquarium Cooling. Fans?

PC fans cool a PC when the room is warm, so yes :) As long as its moving the relatively stale air you should notice a small benefit. Where did all my co2 go

You also can't measure co2 usage by 'bubbles per second' as every regulator is different to some degree and will release co2 at slightly different rates. Then you have variations in the co2 line, etc. making bubbles different sizes.

Good EI discussion (split from Paul's 200L journal)

Just to correct myself about the 'balance' - its more about the balance of light and co2. Ferts make no difference. I've double dosed EI from day 1 and not had issues. The problems arise when nutrients are simply too low.
  51. J

Good EI discussion (split from Paul's 200L journal)

I fail to see the point though G... AFAIK, no one has ever said anything different :eh:
  52. J

Good EI discussion (split from Paul's 200L journal)

How to re-scape a hi-tech tank, once it's past its best

Why rinse the old substrate? You'll wash away what good is left in there and potentially end up with a massive ammonia spike after killing off the good bacteria. I'd either disturb it as little as possible, or replace it completely.
