If you're only changing 4l in a 30l tank I can't see any problem going with 50/50 straight away, You're only replacing 2l of tap for RO, it will take quite a while to reach equilibrium but that's OK.

Good advice above and I also think that it is beneficial to take some time acclimating these initially fragile fish, your LFS may be using the same tapwater but I can well imagine it containing a lot of other compounds that are raising the TDS. A man of my own heart. I enjoy trimming an odd spent/unwanted leaf off of an odd Crypt now and again but two hours of trimming, removing trimmings and replanting per week is a thing of the past for me, that is after initial start-up and the gradual replacement of most of the stem plants.

I think there is a general lack of Magnesium in tap water across most of the UK. If your aquarium is only 27l you would probably only need to add about half of a gram or so to your change water.

Hi, Sorry to hear of your fish deaths. You might just want to add a small amount of Magnesium via Epsom Salts to try and achieve an approximate 3 - 1 Calcium - Magnesium ratio. It all looks pretty good to me. Cheers!

If they are being forced underwater then that's probably not a good thing. I would plant a good few clumps of Limnophila Sessiflora (or similar fast growing plant) along the back your tank to help kickstart the ecosystem, they will also help to protect your floating plants once they have grown...

I believe all of the soil based products will eventually break down some quicker than others and all will start to lose their benefits (nourishment, KH buffering) after 6 months to a year. If it's low maintenance and longevity you're after I would go with Eco Complete or the like or just plain...
