Something with copper in would kill them, Panacur did a pretty good job on some MTS I had when I was trying to treat planaria and didn't check what would happen to the snails.

That's a great post and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am interested in these as they seem a good combination between a self sustaining population that can breed in fresh water and being slow breeding enough that you don't get plagues of them like with ramshorns or pond snails.

Brilliant, thanks! My desk tank is a 25l cube I got from Aquarium Gardens and I am thinking of upgrading to a larger size. It's refreshing to see a tank available in the UK!

I use that plastic egg crate diffuser, I am not sure that this would spread the load very much at all so I would be worried about point loading 6mm glass like that.

I am probably going to get shot down in flames for this but I don't worry too much about feeding. I have two colonies of red neos and one of PRL Caridina and, when the tanks were quite new (
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
No, sorry. I installed a small RO system when I started keeping caridina and it was neither expensive nor difficult to install.

Other people will have other opinions, that's just what I do, but I can't see the harm if you regularly monitor parameters.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I don't. After the tanks are properly established I just top up with RO water as and when. Obviously I still monitor parameters but they stay very stable, Shrimp produce very little waste.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
Absolutely. I have three tanks and maintenance is really only tidying up the plants and keeping on top of the water. Between the shrimps and a few nerites I have barely any algae so there is very little to do.

I really like the look of this. Personally I would stick to rock and plants for something like this but that's just me.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I must admit that I don't fully understand the implications or ramifications of this but it certainly sounds exciting.
Well done Simon!
Could you please explain this to me like I am a small child?

I use dark brown linen thread. It is very strong and the muted colour blends in really well with lots of colours of wood and stone, then it rots away after several months.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
If the stone bubbles or fizzes when you put vinegar on it then it will dissolve slowly in water and raise your pH and hardness
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
As I understand it you should thoroughly boil found items to avoid transferring any parasites to your tank, and that wood should have the bark removed. There is probably more advice than that but those two stuck in my memory
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I cut mine just above the lowest leaf node so that they bush out low down, then strip the lowest pair of leaves off the"top" bit that I cut off and replant it.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
Thank God for that! I had one tank get completely overrun by them at one point, I want to avoid that if at all possible.

I just finished setting this up, ultimately to house some Caridina Cantonensis once it has cycled. It's a Fluval Flex 57 litre
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I am setting up a new tank to house some Crystal Red Caridina shrimps and am wondering about snails to control algae. The shrimps need soft water at a lowish pH, are there any snails who would do ok in the same conditions? I have nerites and ramshorns in with my Neos but they have much harder...
It is pretty heavily planted with Java Fern, red root floaters and dwarf hair grass, plus a good population of neocaridinas.

Hi,
Congratulations on being a shrimp grandma! I have only been keeping a couple of years but can tell you what I know:
1. No need to worry about inbreeding, I had the same question but was told that some people have had whole colonies lasting for a decade or more from a few initial individuals...
From a brief stint in another life bashing wooden pegs into the ground in a ragstone quarry it is more like a sandstone so should be ok. Get a bit, leave it to dry and then pour some vinegar or Viakal on it. If it fizzes then it will dissolve, harden your water (if it is possible to make Kent...
It has worked fine, sits perfectly between 26 and 24 centigrade based on my little stick on thermometer. It's a great set. My only concern was that the sponge on the filter seemed a little coarse for shrimplets but you can get a finer one.

Excuse the algae, it needs a clean! This is the pump, it's rated up to 400l p/h but you can adjust the flow.

I have an Aquael Shrimp Set Smart and have found it to be excellent. It comes with pump (Aquael Pat Mini) and a very good LED light, I can't remember if my heater was included or not.

As I understand it crushed coral, or other carbonate containing substances like limestone, can be used to bump up the hardness of your water if needed.

Good call. My first tank was the Aquael shrimp set and it has been great. I did replace the filter with a sponge filter because I was scared about shrimplets getting sucked in. The sponge that comes with it is quite coarse but could easily be replaced.

Mine have daily Bacter AE supplemented with a few Hikari Crab Cuisine every couple of days or so, which they love. Blanched broccoli is a big favourite as well.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
That's looking really good, nice work. Funny you mention boatmen as I had a few in my pond this summer, fascinating creatures.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I must be doing something right as my shrimps won't stop breeding! The initial six have multiplied to too many to count in the last few months. Please excuse the grainyness, I just fed them their BacterAE and then realised how many were visible so decided to take a photo. The moss at the back is...
Yes, I should have mentioned that. I only give them a small portion of the spoon and have a lot of aeration going on.
Sent from my [null] using Tapatalk
I have had a good four or five generations of babies so far in my little tank and did nothing apart from moving to a sponge filter and airstone and adding some Moss for them to graze on. I keep them temperature around 25 Celsius and feed Bacter AE daily with occasional Hikari crab cuisine or...
Tagged as I am interested to follow the development of this idea. I am also toying with the idea of a rock-heavy scape next so I am hoping to pick up some tips and inspiration.

I have a 30l cube tank with about a dozen RCS and a few Ramshorn snails, quite heavily planted. It has a Pat mini filter and Leddy lights. One of my RCS is berried so, in a panic, I put the foot of a 40 denier tights over the sponge of my filter as I was concerned about the shrimplets being...
Thanks guys. The shrimp have only been in a couple of weeks so it's too early to expect babies yet I guess. I was worried that some had died as I had only seen one or two but I saw five grazing on algae earlier so I guess all the plants must be hiding them.
Thanks for the Photoshop work too...
Hi, I am new here so thought I would introduce myself. I have just got a little 20l cube as a bit of interest on my desk in my office at home. Current residents are 3 ramshorns and 6 cherry shrimp, I put a photo up in the gallery of it.
Hi, I am new here but wanted to get some feedback on my first tank. It's a 20l cube that's been running for about 6 weeks or so now. I have three Ramshorn snails and a few cherry shrimp, although the shrimp are keeping a low profile at the moment. Have I let it get too overgrown?
Please excuse...
