I am just playing with the settings of the AI Prime LED to get a suitable spectrum..

Changing over from marine to FW planted

My initial plan was to have 2 diffusers, one under each outlet from the return, it would be quite easy to place one in the return chamber though so I will keep that in mind as well, thanks.

Changing over from marine to FW planted

    Substrate amount

How much substrate would you recommend for a footprint of 3'x2' and what depth would you say if I wanted it to slope towards the rear. Cheers Tim

    "Perfect" water

Ok that is good information thanks. Have there been any studies into the use of individual elements being dosed into planted tanks?
  9. tgc

    "Perfect" water

This is what I am getting at, in the SW world the nutrients are taken up by the macro algae and the animals by making sure they have what they need to thrive in a controlled manner, so why can't that be done in FW? I will come back to other accumulations later, one thing at a time :D Dont get...
  10. tgc

    "Perfect" water

Yes that I get as it is the same reason most people say for the SW side, but what are the natural ways of dealing with nutrients?

    "Perfect" water

How do you measure fish hormones in your water?
  12. tgc

    "Perfect" water

The expense of Triton depends on what you are comparing it to. It is basically the same as baling but with the added knowledge gained from accurate water testing, so you are dosing accurately and not guessing, like you do with most other methods, including EI for FW I guess. If you just do it...

Changing over from marine to FW planted

Yep thanks Martin I understand that. I will look at upgrading the return.
  14. tgc

Changing over from marine to FW planted

Thanks for the reply Martin. The plumbing on the sump is silent so noise is not an issue at all. The first chamber I will try to reuse the Siporax for bio media and will also run fine filter socks. Turn over speed I will look at, currently probably around 5-6x

Changing over from marine to FW planted

Hi Guys I have an opportunity to change one of my tanks over from a marine macro algae seahorse tank to a freshwater planted. I would obviously like to re-use as much of the equipment as possible to keep to changeover costs to a minimum. The tank itself is a sumped 3ft optiwhite rimless...

    "Perfect" water

Hi there. I've been away from planted tanks for a good few years and I'm looking forward to see how things have progressed in the industry. While I've been away I've been heavily involved in the Reef Keeping industry and I also run at home a high tech SPS reef. This reef is run on a method...

    nano sump, co2 diffusor

If you can put up with the gurgling noise they are fine, when i had the overflow on my marine tank i used to spend hours fiddling with a bit of air line trying to stop the dreaded gurgle. If you can, get the tank drilled for a sump much better, if you cant then there is nothing wrong with these. :)

any one know about planning laws?

Depends what you want to build it out of, if you get one of those pre-fab concrete garages like the one i'm getting  as long as its over five metres away from your house you don't need planning permision because it's classed as a temporary building. Anything else I'm not sure. Cheers Tim

    Tetratec 1200 problem

If you look where the hoses attach to the taps and to the inflow and outflows, where the screw tightners screw down sometimes (on mine anyway) the hose comes away from the tapered bit, the solution i use is to cut an inch off the hose to make a better seal. Know what i mean??

    Alternatives for dosing

The MV lamp height above the water as well as the depth of the tank works out about 30" above substrate. So if i look to get about 15ppm C02 and just keep the fish well fed, swop the bag for the tropica plant nutrition and increase the amount of water changes we should be ok??
