    Angelfish and discus together

Gouramis could be an option but definitely not rainbows. I’d say you’d need a minimum four foot tank for rainbows, they get pretty big and are very active.

They’d probably want something a bit larger. Medaka would be your best bet and you won’t need a heater. I’ve had them swimming under a thin layer of ice before.

    Stocking levels

I wouldn’t get them, it’s not even a standard sized 60l but a 60l cube so you have even less space for the fish. Cardinals can get pretty large and some of my older ones are pushing the 2inch mark. Gold tetras are far more active than cardinals, I wouldn’t put them in anything less than a 60cm...

Only dwarf species for a tank that size unfortunately. The bronzes would need 60cm minimum.

    Nano blackwater recommendations

The open top will put a stop to wild Betta unless you’re willing to drop the water level by at least 4 inches for small species like channoides. They would be the perfect fit otherwise. Any of the boraras would be a good choice, Tucano tetras, ruby tetras, African butterfly barbs (Enteromius...

    Anyone had problems introducing otocinclus

If I’m honest some of those fish shown look too far gone and I’ll be surprised if they make it. They look to be in very poor condition.

    Anyone had problems introducing otocinclus

Dwarf loricariids (otos, parotocinclus etc) struggle when newly imported but you have a shop or wholesaler who knows what they’re doing and get them feeding before they go on sale they normally do ok. You’ll see shops like pier aquatics that add branches covered in bark and lichen to their...

    Anyone had problems introducing otocinclus

Always a good idea to add some botanicals like catappa leaves when introducing ottos and similar dwarf loricariids. They’ll feed off the bio film that is produced. The issue is with these fish is that if they haven’t fed in the shop for some time then they’re too far gone by the time you get...

    Tucano tetra !!!

Soft water and a bit of tlc when new. Baby brine shrimp is great to get them back in shape. After the initial settling in period I’ve found them to be as hardy as any other small characin.

    Quality of fish food ingredients

Fauna for a black water tank

Mine have eaten dry food from the beginning. I haven’t noted them to be that territorial either, the males display to each other but that’s it really. I think they’re very delicate on import but once settled they’re quite hardy.
  21. Conort2

Fauna for a black water tank

This is true, you’d want some that have been quarantined and that you have seen feeding.
  22. Conort2

Fauna for a black water tank

I don’t think they’re anywhere near large enough for that. Is he confusing them with crenichus spilurus? The only thing remotely similar to them which gets much larger and can eat small fish. Adult dominant male morphos can’t be much bigger than a green neon.
  23. Conort2

    Oriole

    You’re tempting me now too!
  24. Conort2

    Oriole

They’ll be tank bred, no danger of them being wild caught.
  25. Conort2

Fauna for a black water tank

They like cooler water so wouldn’t be a good fit. I’d give those a miss. Ideally you’d want one of the rio negro species like nijseni, tukano, adolfoi, duplicareus etc. I recon something like sterbai or gossei would also be ok with the warmer temperatures.
  26. Conort2

Fauna for a black water tank

I thought greens were found in even warmer water than cardinals? Or maybe I’m getting them mixed up?
  27. Conort2

Fauna for a black water tank

I wouldn’t go with dwarf cichlids with the morpho tetras. Even though they’re characins they behave like dwarf cichlids. They’re an amazing species but they will feel intimidated by the cichlids in a tank that size and hide.
  28. Conort2

Corydoras Nijsseni would be a good fit.

    Any ideas on the cause?

I can’t imagine cherry barbs doing that. So we can rule the fish out then. If it was ottos it would look like a fish has gone at the leaves with sand paper. Plecs do not cause damage like that. More than likely crypt melt. You seem to have some healthy new growth coming through already so I...

More Betta Rubra fry keep popping up. I appear to have had at least two successful spawns as there is quite a size difference between the two sets of fry. The male had some orange on him. The female was a dull brown colour who would turn bright yellow as most apistos do when spawning. I’m not sure if they were wild caught or captive bred, they were full grown when I purchased them so I would guess that they were wild caught.

I unfortunately ended up losing the pair of them. Not sure what it was, they both passed at separate times. I was absolutely gutted, the male has to be one of the most stunning fish I’ve kept. Never seen any for sale since. They seemed to be pretty hardy and didn’t need either super soft or...

Sand substrate looks after itself really if you have decent flow and especially if you have some catfish to stir it up. It’s far too fine for waste to get trapped in it. All depends if you opt for courier delivery (which is usually quicker) or if you want A4L to deliver your tank. I opted for courier and it was one bloke who dropped it kerb side. He struggled getting it off the lorry, I had to help him. There was no chance he was managing it by himself.

Something’s wrong with my clown loach

Strange that it’s so small for that age, they’re not the fastest growing fish but I’d expect it to be a fair bit bigger. If it is internal nematodes ndx will be very effective and you should start to see the fish put on weight pretty quickly.
  59. Conort2

Something’s wrong with my clown loach

Give esha ndx a go, it’s very effective against nematodes. Wasting is common in newly imported loaches but surprised to see you have had this fish for a long time. How big is the fish? It seems to be very small for a 7 year old clown loach.
  60. Conort2

    Fish size and compatablility

I would’ve said you would have been better off with a 120cm tank for the fish you already had. I’m not sure what a black spotted eel is without seeing the scientific name. I’m guessing some kind of spiny eel? some of these stay quite small, others can end up giants.
  61. Conort2

What kind of eggs are these?

Sorry I forgot to add, I’ll change most of the water in the tub daily and always have a few small Malaysian trumpet snails in there too.

Lighting options for 5x2x2 low tech setup

You don’t need to go mad and over do it with the lighting if you only have easy plants and the tanks low tech. Lost my pygmy corydoras after a water change

that’s interesting, it doesn’t seem to be the case in my tanks. However, every tank has corydoras in it and also Malaysian trumpet snails so I’m sure they both do a good job of shifting the detritus up into the water column to be removed by mechanical filtration.
  81. Conort2

Lost my pygmy corydoras after a water change

I’d personally use sand. Corydoras ideally need sand to exhibit natural behaviour of digging and sand sifting. Gravel doesn’t allow this and I wouldn’t keep corydoras on anything other than sand, it’s not fair on the fish in my opinion. Gravel also traps a massive amount of detritus and waste...

    Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesi)

This definitely helps, more males than females is always a good idea with corydoras. Adding more males to my duplicareus group helped them spawn more consistently. I can’t get these to spawn no matter what I try.
