Look on eBay at Fennstones. I’ve had large slate pieces from them, they are very helpful.

    EI DOSING USING DRY SALTS

Your article is very helpful, thank you. Still panic about my nitrates being high on water change day. Been dosing EI for about a three week, plants look much better, less algae, more green.

    Strange Little Plant

I think it looks most like one of the lilaeopsis, the leaves have the same rounded look. How splendid, I wonder where it came from, but I’m pleased to have it!

    Strange Little Plant

I don’t think it’s Val, those roots were delayed in the Christmas post and I found the little green plant in another tank and transferred it. They are definitely not related and I have never had any Val until I received the damaged plants at Christmas.

    Strange Little Plant

This strange, wiry, grassy plant has appeared in my tank. Anyone know what it is? Behind it is a dead looking root of Val, which I was hoping would revive, so the straw-coloured stuff is not part of the grass.

    Tropic Marin Remineral

Can anyone advise whether I can use this product to remineralise RO water for my Yellow Sakura Shrimp. I have just moved them into a larger tank so I need to increase the volume of their environment. This is the only remineraliser my LFS stocks, and as the move was an emergency one (due to an...

Long brown algae on a new setup.

Hi, I have this algae too. I have a 35 gallon with 4 Dwarf Puffers, 4 Khuli Loaches and 3 Amano Shrimp. My house is cold so I recently turned up the heater to 80 F. It’s planted with lots of low tech plants, I recently put some plant tabs in with a few new plants. No other fertilisation. No...

    IKEA Hydroponics setup

My husband recently visited IKEA alone (unsupervised) and, knowing my desire to keep tropical Drosera (I keep lots of hardier carnivores) purchased a plant set up as a gift for me. On looking at it it’s obviously a tiny hydroponics system. Has anyone used one of these for growing aquarium...

    Water Change Advice

Thanks Konsa, I originally got the shrimp to see if I could use them for the puffs. I really like them but a few losses won’t upset me too much. Lol!

    Water Change Advice

I might worried I’ll kill them, they like stability, my waters very hard, they have no problem with that. Maybe I should have gone down the RO water route, it’s not expensive. I’m thinking of introducing some chill rasboras in there, they prefer softer water.

    Microsorum/java fern brown spots

Hi, I don’t know if this is hijacking your thread, but I have similar problems in my shrimp tank, the java fern in there is spotty and has poor growth, there is subwassertang, java moss and water wisteria there but they are ok and growing well. I was looking for advice on a fertiliser but came...

    Water Change Advice

To be fair no one seems to know, I think you are probably right in the sense that using tap water will increase the TDS, using RO will result in a change in TDS/osmotic pressure and subsequent deaths. A mix of both is an educated way to proceed. I’ll post the results, watch this space!

    Water Change Advice

Thank you for your response. It’s kind of you to be so speedy, I still am unsure about whether to use RO water or treated tap water for actual water changes as opposed to top ups.

    Water Change Advice

Hi, I have a 10 gallon with Yellow Sakura, and lots of MTS. They are in prime-d tapwater. I’ve been replacing evaporated fluids with tap water but my TDS is rising, of course. Now got some RO water to use, but confused about which to use for a water change, the parameters otherwise are...

    Is this an aquatic plant?

I’ve submerged it in my snail tank, I can’t plant it because it has no roots, I could put it in with my shrimp (their tank has a hood), let it float at the surface, then lift it out slowly. It’s such a beautiful plant, and looked stunning waving gently in the flow in my Puffer tank. It’s far too...

    Is this an aquatic plant?

Interestingly removed this plant from my aquarium, and put it into the top of the trickle filter. It has proceeded to wilt miserably. I may put it into my snail tank, and just keep an eye on it. No idea how to proceed now, but I can’t just throw it away until it’s completely and irretrievably dead.

    Is this an aquatic plant?

Not Bolbitis. I agree it is the same, or extremely similar to post 497910. That leaves me with what to do with it. It has no roots at all, it’s just a collection of stems. Perhaps I could put it in the top of my trickle filter, see how it does. If anyone has a better idea left me know.

    Is this an aquatic plant?

i was sold this as African Water Fern and being obsessional about knowing what plants are and how to care for them, I looked it up on the Internet, the upshot of which is I don’t think it is. It could be Malaysian Water Fern (?) , but I’m not convinced. Any suggestions? it’s very attractive...

    Choice of floating water plant.

Thanks for the reply, I have some hornwort in an outdoor snail tub so I could move some of that, it would need significant cleaning though. I will try to get some frog-bit or water lettuce. I think water sprite might be a little vigorous forth the ten gallon, but may do ok in the 35 gallon. I’ll...

    Choice of floating water plant.

Hi, I have some Salvinia Auriculata floating on two of my tanks, I’m using it to help reduce nitrates, but both tanks have hoods. I’ve noticed it’s not thriving and as time goes on looks less green and looks sickly, although the roots are growing. I understand this plant dislikes humidity. Both...

    Using two different substrates.

I’m planning a tank for dwarf puffers, and reusing gravel substrate from a previous, cycled, tank. I need an area of softer substrate to accommodate some loaches I’m going to use as clean-up crew, and having seen people use plastic containers for substrate when breeding shrimp, wondered if this...

    Malaysian Trumpet Snails

I've got MTS, 5 of which I added to my tank as bioload during cycling. The cycling isn't yet finished and ive not fed them, but today, back from holiday, I noticed that the little snails are now adult and there is one tiny baby snail. I feel inordinately pleased.

    Java Fern

During planting my Java Fern broke up and two leaves without roots became detached. One has a thickened brown base, the other does also but has an old break on the mid stem further up with some brown decay around it. It it worth sticking these to a stone or should I just add them to my compost...

Cycling a new tank for shrimps.

Hi I've been cycling a tank now for about 2 weeks using the fishless cycle. I do have 5 tiny MTS, java moss, a merimo moss ball and a bunch of subwassertang in as well. I've fed the tank with ammonia up to 2, and checked the ammonia levels each day, and they have dropped down to 0.5 after 24...

It's very hard, 14 from the tap. I'm cutting it with 20% clean rainwater which takes it down to 10. I keep closed rainwater tanks for my carnivorous plants, its all from my greenhouse roof, so not too bad. I stand for 24 hours then treat it with Stresscoat. I've made a drip acclimator so I'm...

Just saying hi. New to all this, just cycling my first shrimp tank, hoping to get a few cherries to see if I've got the basics ok.
