I do similar, or just waft the hoover above the gravel to suck up detritus. I have one corner where, owing to water circulation, all the muck collects and it’s easy to suck up there.

Alkaline/Hard water used for water change into acidic/soft water aquarium

Alkaline/Hard water used for water change into acidic/soft water aquarium

The other thing is that the impact of the substrate will reduce over time, so eventually you will end up with a hard water tank anyway. If your water source is hard and you want a soft water tank, the only long term way of achieving that is to use RO or, like I do, rainwater.

    15l bowl scape

Difference being that an aquarium (or gold fish bowl) is a closed system, where as the wild isn’t. You’ve also got very small surface area to volume because of the bowl shape. But, chacun à son goût. Personally, I think it’s cruel.
  57. hypnogogia

    Little 20l AIO

So it would be 3.5/60 to get the grams per Liter value = 0.058, or 0.06g/L. Therefore you need to add 0.06*30 for each 2.5dGH you want to achieve. What dGH increase were you looking for?
  58. hypnogogia

    15l bowl scape

According to seriously fish, they need a minium 60*30 tank. Seems a lot of fish for what amounts to little more than a bucket of water.
  59. hypnogogia

    TDS pen recommendations

In the US, we use a 500 PPM scale. That means that 1 µS/cm = 0.5 PPM. Note: µS stands for micro-Siemens. This weird µ is a Greek letter, denoting ‘micro’ or 1 millionth Siemens (10-6 for math-savvy guys). In Europe and internationally, we use a 640 PPM scale. That means that 1 µS/cm = 0.64 PPM...
