    Cryptocoryne ciliata

Cheers zozo, I don't really mind if it grows out of the tank, but if it gets too wild I can always remove it and give it to someone with a Paludarium/Riparium setup.

    Cryptocoryne ciliata

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells Cryptocoryne ciliata? I've read it's great for brackish aquaria and i'm looking for some for an upcoming tank. I have seen it on a wholesalers import list when I searched, so I think it is traded, but I've never actually seen it for sale anywhere.

    Lighting advice 80x40x40

Hi Iain, I was sure I remembered reading about these lights when I was researching leds, so I searched and found this post - growbeam tiles. Are these the lights you have? If so I think they'll be fine :).

    Acrylic Tank Dilemma

I don't have any experience with them, but looking around Acrylic Aquariums seem like they do consumer sized tanks. As for the weight of the tank I use this weight calculator to give me a rough idea. According to the calculator a 4'x2'x2' 1/2 inch thick acrylic aquarium full of freshwater would...

    Odd cory behaviour

Hi, I took a look at your journal, lovely tank. In my experience it take around 4-6 weeks for Corydoras to settle in and stop 'glass surfing'. It's a fairly common occurence for Cories as far as I know and mine still do it occasionally. I wouldn't be particulary worried about it, but if it...

    Soil substrate in brackish tank?

Great, thanks for the help. My plan is to let the plants settle in and adapt to submerged growth in hard fresh water, then after a couple of weeks gradually raise the salinity during each water-change up to around 1.003. The low salinity and slow increase will hopefully help the plants and limit...

    Easy/hardy low tech floating plants

I've had great success with 'Amazon Frogbit' - Limnobium laevigatum, I believe other good options are 'water lettuce' - Pistia stratiotes and 'Floating Fern' - Salvina Natans. 'Water Sprite' - Ceratopteris thalictroides can also grow as a floating plant.

    Soil substrate in brackish tank?

I have read mentions of soil/fertile substrates under sand for planted brackish aquariums, but not an awful lot of detail I'm afraid. Interesting, did you try any other plants? Also roughly what specific gravity was your tank at? There isn't a lot of information on planted brackish aquariums...

    Soft alkaline water?

Had a chat with Colin, he said kept them in soft water with just enough coral sand to buffer the PH above neutral, so same idea really. I think i'll probably keep it simple and do the same. I have some aragonite sand for another tank, I presume since its CaCO3 it will be ok to use? If not I'll...

    Soft alkaline water?

Yeah I've read that breeding report, it was what got me interested in Dario dario when I was looking at small fish for a nano tank. It's a shame it's so difficult to find females, which is partly why I am leaning towards Dario hysiginon because I believe females are more common. I'm not sure...

    Soft alkaline water?

Thanks for the explanation Darrel. My tapwater is around 75 - 100 microS and I've got some MgSO4.7H2O and KHCO3, so I'll experiment with adding different ratios in a bucket and see what parameters I end up with.

    Soft alkaline water?

By CO3 do you mean Carbonate? In what form? Would small amounts of Potassium Carbonate (K2CO3) result in an alkaline PH with a minimal increase in hardness?

    Low tech stem plants

I think zozo's post is highlighted by the other responses in this thread. Some plants work for some, but not others; especially in low-tech setups. Probably your best bet is to try as many different 'easy' stem plants as you can and find out which thrive in your particular conditions.

    Low tech stem plants

I don't have a wide experience with stem plants, however I've always had the best luck with Hygrophilia, (especially H. polysperma). It grows very well for me with low light and ferts. Others that do ok are Rotala rotundafolia, Limnophilia aromatica and Bacopa caroliniana, but they don't truly...

    Soft alkaline water?

While researching Dario hysginon I found that, according to SeriouslyFish, the water of their habitat in northern Myanmar is quite soft. However it is also neutral to alkaline in PH. I'm not particulary knowledgeable about water chemistry, but am I correct in thinking that this is due to a low...

My Dario sp. Scarlet & 'Melon/Flame red' badis

No worries, I was just curious because I've read that most Dario sp. (especially from Myanmar) come from water that is soft but neutral to alkaline. I'm trying to establish if they would be ok in my soft acidic water.

My Dario sp. Scarlet & 'Melon/Flame red' badis

Lovely fish, I'm hoping to get a pair or trio of Dario sp. myself. Out of interest what water conditions are you keeping these in? I remember reading somewhere on the forum that Kesgrave Tropicals an Ebay seller sometimes has female Dario dario. Looking forward to the updates.

Low tech first past advice welcome

The Chihiros Aquasky is similar in style to the ADA Aquasky but I believe it comes with a built in dimmer. If you not bothered about aesthetics the A-Series is cheaper and also comes with a dimmer. I've never used the Aquasky but I use the A-Series on my own low-techs.

    Soil substrate in brackish tank?

I'm wasn't sure which sub-forum to post this, so apologies if I should have asked somewhere else. Anyway I'm in the early planning stages of a low-end brackish (below 1.005) planted tank that will house a Figure Eight Puffer. My question is whether there would any reason not to use a soil...

    Ideas...

It depends on whether you want plants attached at the base of the wood, or in the substrate around the base. Attached to wood: Anubias, Bucephalandra and Java Fern do well in low light levels. In the substrate most Cryptocorynes will do well with low lighting. These are just a few examples from...

Where to buy standard glass tank?

I had similar issues when I was looking for just a bare tank. If you're set on a rimless tank your best bet would be a custom tank from one of these suppliers, ND Aquatics seems to be the most popular. I recently ordered the tanks I was after from DC Aquariums, service was excellent but I...

    Chohiros Aquasky low tech

I'm not an expert on lighting, but I think you're pretty much right with experimenting by gradually raising light levels. It's the same method I used for my Chihiros A-Series on a low tech. Unless you use a PAR meter, or data from someone with a similar setup I would think it's the best way.

calling on chihiros series a users

It's the A601 model. I have it mounted a couple of inches above a 15inch high tank in an old metal hood. The light is very bright on the highest intensity, since my tank is low-tech I use it on a low setting. I don't know the PAR readings but I recall people having great success with using them...

    Cories and aquasoil

I haven't used aquasoil, but I believe it mostly retains it shape unless deliberately crushed. However i'm not sure if foraging Corydoras are enough to disturb that particular soil. If you are concerned you could consider some of the less bottom oriented dwarf Corydoras: Corydoras pygmaeus or...

    Hello from the Highlands

Hi all, I have been browsing the forums for quite a while and thought it's about time I said hello. I had an aquarium when I was a child, but only seriously entered the hobby about a year ago. I'm primarily interested in the fishkeeping side of things and keep low-tech, slow growth and low...
