It doesn't feel like they're in competition with each other. The Kickstarter one looks beautiful, but they look like they're from a garden (not in a bad way). The ADA Terra Base looks (and is meant to look) like a tree trunk from a rainforest.
Thomas that looks amazing. How frequently do you have to empty the water that pools at the bottom of the aquarium?
What are the little ferns towards the top of your terra?
I'm considering getting one of these for the office.
I bought the ADA wood cabinet and tank for 45x45x45 cube 4-5 years ago. At the time I thought it would be difficult to scape, but I really wanted the ADA wood cabinet + tank and it's all they had in store. It turns out it was hard to scape, especially for a beginner.
A few years later I sold it...
Hi rebel,
Does it lower it by that much ? I thought Malaya was the one that lowered ph significantly. I’ll have to do the maths on Africana and see where it will put me. My tap water is about 7ph.
Hi soggy,
I’m in no rush but I’ve only got one tank as it’s a small apartment. The fish will be in a big bucket during rescaping (with heater and filter), so the sooner they can be reintroduced the better.
I am using co2 but as it’s already tuned in for this aquarium I’d only be adjusting it...
If I’m using Africana with root tabs and I have an established filter is cycling required ? Or can I add fish immediately after scaping the tank ? It’s my understand Africana doesn’t leech ammonia like Amazonia does.
Holy crap you’re right. This thing acts like algae. How can it possibly be growing this fast ? I can’t keep on top of it and it gets tangled deep within all my plants. I’ve had loose Christmas moss and fissidens blow around my tank and grow in odd places but nothing like this!
At least that...
I’ve had BGA in my tank for a year now. I don’t know why but it never takes off. It’s always growing along the soil line on the glass, or around my diffuser. But if I blast it with excel using a syringe it dies off.
When I was dosing EI method in my last tank the BGA took over the entire tank...
Sorry got busy with work and forgot to report back. There were no effects from the added Epsom salts. I’ve increased iron to 3x the standard ADA recommended dose and seeing if there’s any change.
All other plants in the tank other than the Buce and Anubias are very healthy (well other than the...
When did you readd livestock and were they okay ?
I could always keep the fish in the bucket for a week but it would mean running a second filter which I’d need to cycle first (and buy...).
What about if I put the new Amazonia in the bucket for a few weeks with it’s own seeded filter to cycle...
Oase 350. I was planning on having the lily pipe just above the water surface as that seems to lower the flow. Otherwise I can just wraps the outlet with some sponge.
Hello,
I only run a single aquarium. I want to do a rescape soon (tank been running for over a year).
I plan to keep the fish in a 70 litre bucket with the filter running on it while I rescape the tank (so just a day or so).
My question is if I rescape with fresh ADA Amazonia aquasoil, am I...
If you're forgetting to dose, maybe buy an autodoser? I bought the JEBAO autodoser with 3 outputs and use it with ADA ferts. Once calibrated it's extremely accurate, and it's really cheap too. I couldn't go back to dosing manually everyday. Even though now and again I miss pumping the ferts in...
my buce is yellowing. Is this lack of iron ? Also my Anubias nana is melting on the tips and has some holes. I use Ada lean dosing. Currently dosing about 20% more than the standard ADA daily dose.
Biomaster 350. Rated at 1100 l/hr compared to the 600s 1250 l/hr so I assumed it wouldn’t be far off. It’s on a 60*45*45 so it should be sufficient. I replaced all media with bio rio (just the main chambers). Running ada standard lily pipes. I’m now running one small mesh bag of bio rio per...
I’m quite upset at how bad my oase biomaster is. The flow is like a trickle. It’s great having the heater in the cannister but the flow rate is so bad I’m thinking of giving it away. I now have a eheim Pro 4 and oase biomaster I don’t want and don’t know what to buy next. The eheim is good but...
Another question , could this device be detrimental to ottoconclis ? Seeing as it kills the algae they feed off and leaves the algae they don’t ? I used this for the last month and my ottos have become skinny (they had previously been thriving ). I add blanched veggies but they never seem to eat...
I’m already running with one filter basket empty but today I’m going to swap out the 45ppi intake for 30ppi intake. I’ll update with the results. I’m not sure if it’s flow or just that these heaters can’t push more than 8 degrees from room temp at this tank size, but we’ll find out!
I have the 350 on a 60*45*45 and I had to remove some filter Media to get acceptable flow rates (removed one of the sponges from the intake pre filter and also left a whole filter media chamber empty ).
Mine was a killer of small fish. I watched fish being sucked into it as I was standing there. I switched to the ocean free skimmer which was totally fish and shrimp Safe. Then I switched to the new ada vuppa which is noisy but works well and looks good.
hi, my 200w in filter heater is struggling to keep my 120 litre tank at 24 when what I need is 27-28. Room temp is 16. Does this sound right ? Do I need a second heater for the winter ? Or should a 200w heater be able to handle this demand ? Are the oase in filter heaters less efficient ?
The...
It appears after using the ice method and also comparing to indoor digital thermostat that the large ada thermometer reading 24 is actually the correct reading, while 21 and 22 are way off.
Not recently so I can’t return them. I might contact ADA directly for response. And yes I do hate that. For instance I bought the most expensive co2art regulator and it’s currently sitting in a box in the cupboard because the solenoid keeps not turning off and the pressure isn’t consistent. I’m...
I can only assume they are genuine. They’re all bought from proper Retailers. The one on the right does look slightly off centre but that could just be a normal variation. None of ADAs glassware is identical from what I can tell once you look closely enough.
I have Arlo cameras all over my house and I have one pointed right at my tank. That way I can log in anywhere anytime and see what’s going on. It’s been extremely useful as I’ve seen the tubing had popped off the diffuser and I can quickly turn off the lighting remotely so I don’t get an algae...
One reads 24 one reads 22 and one reads 21. I left them in there for half an hour, gave them all a gentle tap with finger etc but their readings are steady. I even held the two smaller ones lower in the tank to see if that accounted for the difference but it didn’t. Isn’t this a lot of variation...
All of my anubias (except new growth) and most of my other plants such as s repens have this brown stuff all over the leaves. If I rub the leaves with my fingers it does come off but not easily, which makes me think it's not just aquascaping dust but an algae. What is it?
Did first trim a few days ago. It's going to take a few more months before this grows into what I was picturing. And the plant I forgot the name of is Lobelia cardinals.
Aren’t they just melting ? I planted a bunch of them in my last tank , they all melted like that for no reason while everything else was healthy and then grew back new leaves and we’re very healthy too. I didnt understand why.
This is a loverly little tank, I really like it. I'd buy an ADA thermometer as in a small tank like this it will make a world of difference and is quite affordable for the impact it will have visually. I couldn't go without a thermometer as I've had heaters fail and only knew because I glance at...
I ordered a 60P with ADA stand, but there was a mix up and they delivered a 60H with matching stand (60x45x45cm) so I decided I'd just roll with it. Hard scape pickings were slim with a very small selection of wood for my size tank, so I ended up breaking up some larger pieces and tying them...
So that's the 60*45*45 cade ? What do you think of the dimensions? I'm interested in one but I'm not sure about it being that deep and high. It's almost a cube. Love your work by the way.
I have had the same fish for a year and a half, some golden tetras and some dwarf chain loaches. Looking into lifespans the golden tetras are about 5 years and the loaches 10-15 years.
I love my fish and will care for them for their full lifespan, whatever that may be. But because of that I...
The room is 17 degrees at the moment (winter) so to get the tank temperature to 26 it would be raising it 9 degrees above room temperature. The manual does state that eheim recommend the 100w heater for tanks up to 150liters based off ambient room temperature of 22degrees. But as my tank is half...
My eheim heater has been struggling to keep the tank at even 24 degrees (I'm aiming for 26). Currently having to run it at 32 degrees just to keep the tank at 24 (calibration dial wouldn't go any further ). Is my eheim faulty or what?
My 100w hydor kept the tank at 26 easy... And if I adjusted...
What I don't get is, if it's similar to Ada without the negatives of Ada why isn't it more widely used? I probably will give it a shot but I do wonder ...
I'm deeply impressed by the quality of cal aqua lily pipes that have outshined and outlasted even my Ada lily pipes. The value is astounding and I'm surprised these aren't the default recommendation when it comes to glassware.
Now I'm tempted to get their black earth soil which looks...
Could the MC be melting because of too many nutrients? Because I dose EI dry ferts and have really deep Ada AS so the plants would be swimming in nutrients.
The tetras have remained the same size but have become even golder than before. Whether that's down to food or just the light I don't...
I'm surprised you found prices to be similar to Canada. Prices were much cheaper compared to Australia. For example the ADA diffuser I bought there was $60 and it's $85 in Australia. Did you check out Aqua Forest shop near skytree ?
Monte Carlo still melting, but I haven't had the new light long enough to know if it will solve the issue. I will update once it's been another week or two.
I stood in the middle too.
I'm jealous you got to go to Niigata, it was just too awkward for me. Only being open on Sunday and being in the middle of nowhere made it hard.
Did you buy any tank equipment in Japan ?
Switched to the kessil a160 tuna sun. I wanted easier access to the tank and found the aquasky a bit too much light. I was growing an algae farm. Love the kessil, controller great too.
It will be interesting to see how it grows plants, I mostly see the 360 used in high-tech.
Zues can I ask what the main reason for moving to the seimans was ? You mentioned a few things but just wondering what made you decide to switch in the first place.
I have the spectral controller for the kessil 160 tuna sun. Anyone else using this ? What's a good daily program? Can you share yours ?
I heard that 0 on the Colour modifier is 6500k so I guess you wouldn't need to go much above 10% on the colour. So maybe
Time / Intensity / colour
10am / 10...
Another fish is sick. I'm getting really worried this is fish tb. The fish lose appetite, lose weight, have protruding scales and eyes pop out more than usual. I've dosed an anti parasite medication and done a dose of antibiotics. (I thought maybe it was a parasite).
Now I don't know what to...
I had to euthanize my Otto. It had become so weak it was stuck on the intake filter. It was also very thin with a curvature of the spine. I had also noticed the tetra was thin too (compared to the others). There are 8 golden tetras and 4 ( now three) Otto's in a 20 gallon tank.
The remaining...
I've had the same stock in the tank for 6-7 months and there's been no visible aggression, I don't think that there's any bullying or anything. They're all peaceful species.
What's really strange is the golden tetras has made a full recovery, but now one of my Otto's is showing the exact...
I have 8 active healthy golden tetras. I come home from work one day and one of them is flat on his back breathing like crazy. It's laying there for hours. Water parameters are fine as always. Nothing is out of the ordinary. All other fish look happy. I raise the temp from 24 to 26 over a few...
Does anyone know why my Monte Carlo is always melting? Ive had a healthy carpet for 5 months but the last few months the carpet is always translucent in areas.
Can a nutrient imbalance cause this? I'm a bit confused as everything seems fine. My ambulia is growing like a weed and my fissiden is...
Argh. The only way I can remove the restriction is by, at a minimum, buying a new inline heater. I could use the supplied eheim inflow and outflow at 16/22mm ( though I already cut the tubing so maybe not). I was hoping someone had already been through this, using a reducer to go from 16/22 to...
Perhaps that's why I'm not impressed. I've never had an issue with green water. I have bba (which I already knew it did nothing about ) , hair algae and green spot algae. It doesn't seem to have any affect on these. I remove all signs of these during maintenance and they come right back.
I also...
I've had the chihiros doctor for many months now and I'm convinced it does nothing to combat algae. I have all types of algae growing. There's been no difference in algae growth.
It could be Placebo but the water appears very clear with the good doctor running. That appears to be the only...
I would have thought this would be a lot of flow for my sized aquarium, but it's still very low flow. Plants don't move and CO2 bubbles show very little flow in the tank.
This filter uses 16/22 mm tubing and I'm using a reducer for my 12/16mm lily pipes. How much would this reduce the flow ...
I performed water changes as suggested but the rocks are unable to be removed. But I have got the bba under control using flourish excel. Haven't lost a soul since. Back to normal :)
Still not sure what caused the multiple deaths, maybe the CO2, maybe the metabolites, maybe the heat (Australia...
After six months of no fatalities, in just two days three shrimp have died and an Otto jumped out of the tank and died. Water test kit says everything is fine. Everything else looks happy in the tank. Could this be a coincidence? My gut says something went wrong but I don't know what it could...
Hi everyone. Just an update. Not much changed. New job is keeping me busy so haven't had the chance to make all the changes I wanted to.
I'm getting heaps of bba. I've been getting this for ages. But only on the stones. I'm getting zero algae of any kind on the plants.
Seems this is usually...
When do you guys recommend trimming the Monte Carlo? When do the bottom layers start to rot? Or is that dependant on lighting? I'm thinking at 2.5-3cm trim it?
Micranthemum micranthemoides will definitely work. I saw some cool shots of hygro araguaia mixed into carpets and bushy plants, but I'm worried the leaves are too big for my tank. I might try some riccardia too, even though I already have fissiden, doesn't hurt to try both.
Thank you so much...
Does anyone have any recommendations for plants I can squeeze in here ? I have Ambulia, HC, MC, hair grass and fissiden Moss. I'm using this tank as a learning experience so I want to try and grow as many different plants as I can.
These ones are wild caught. I think they need the presence of a parasite to have their skin turn gold.
They were less shy when the ambulia was tall and bushy, but i had to cut it back when I had BGA. I'm sure once it grows back they will be happier. It's not floaters and tinted water, but I'm...
Maybe, when the hair grass finally fills out haha. It's shaded by the rock and is taking forever to fill in. I trim it down almost weekly and it grows back but doesn't carpet.
I remember a story I heard about a university professor who had been researching and teaching a theory for over a decade. One day one of his students proved the entire theory to be incorrect. The professor walked down to the student, with tears in his eyes, hugged him and said "thank you".
This...
People recommend dry salts because they cost a fraction of what the commercial liquid fertilisers do. Are there any reasons to use commercial liquid ferts over dry ferts?
You may have received criticism, but it was probably just people trying to help. If it was zealots, that's unfortunate.
I...
I fought a 6 week fight with BGA, my plants suffered terribly. They're finally bouncing back.
Some of my Australian Glass shrimp have had babies. Only a handful survived, but I heard that they don't breed in freshwater?
Added Gear:
Chihiros Aquasky 452
Chihiros Doctor 2
Bazooka Atomiser
Eheim...
Blue Exit did nothing for me. The BGA actually got worse while using it.
I tried everything and finally resorted to antibiotics, which I didn't want to use. It was that or restart the tank. The growth of the BGA was so rapid that I couldn't keep on top of it and my plants were dying. That...
These days you can still make a simple low tech tank. There is a wealth of information and beginners can make anything they want.
How can more options, more info, more layers of optional complexity and more ranges of tank styles possibly be a bad thing ? If beginners are overwhelmed, rush or...
That's true. But the problem with toys in the tank is the focus is no longer about nature. If a child asks you why you have a diffuser in the tank, you have to explain to them how plants grow. If they ask you why you have a plastic toy in the tank, the answer will have nothing to do with the...
Small tanks full of plastic, birds in cages, dogs and cats waddling at a snail's pace with a long list of health issues at age 7-8 because they've been raised on corn, it's all sad.
Parents are to blame. Quite a few animals suffered under my rule when I was a child. I shudder at the way some of...
I have a cat but I wanted open top. So I got an ADA tank and ADA stand together. The reason for this is the cat can't access the tank in this situation as there is nothing to stand on because it's all fitted. His only option would be to actually jump into the tank and go swimming.
In the end it...
They both get hot but I have them staggered so only one gets hot at a time. Both panels are on for four hours with one hour overlap.
The heat might not be a problem as the heatsink is just doing it's job. Were any of the lights you checked at your LFS the ADA Aquasky? I've heard they get hot...
Does anyone know if the Chihiros aquaskys run hotter than the ADA aquaskys? My Chihiros Aquasky 452 gets super hot, too hot to touch. I'm worried about the frame being affected. Especially in summer when its 40 degrees outside...
