Thank you Fred, I will try to take as many pics as possible. Fargesia rufa looks nice. I'm more inclined to one of the Fargesia nitida varieties (probably 'Winter Joy'), as it still looks nice and plump and will grow at least a few more inches high to give me a bit more privacy in the garden.

This is the side of the house: In terms of length, the ground floor only goes pretty much to the first tree. At that point there's a retaining wall for the ground, which goes up to the first floor. So kinda like if the house was built in a slope.

So, if I'm understanding it correctly, that means you don't actually need the "syphon stop hole", as you will never have an actual syphon (vacuum suction), as air will enter from the top section never allowing a syphon to start and it will work as you intend it to.

A small update

Thought I'd do an update here... since I added the planters with Photos plants I never cleaned the plastic plants again... so even lower maintenance. I haven't cleaned this tank in a month (just the regular water changes and filter cleaning). This is how it looks after a month without cleaning...

I managed to block some sunlight using a parasol, so things are getting better. Also using Easy Life AlgExit and Blue Exit, and it seems to help a lot.

I finally figured out what the problem is. And it's water temperature. I realised I was moving the plants from water between 30-35ºC to water at lower 20ºC.

Also managing the sun in this one. Trying Easy Life AlgExit and Blue Exit with some success as I'm fighting some BBA at the moment. I was actually able to eradicate BBA from my goldfish tank by adding a few Photos plants to it.

Managing to fight the sun. Also trying Easy Life AlgExit and Blue Exit with good results. The puffers were asleep.

Just thought I'd share how this tank is right now, just 6 months after going salty!

Great project! I achieved the same results in my Juwel Rio 240 with a big filter (EHEIM Pro4 600) and an air curtain on the background for a bare bottom tank. I have the air pump on a timer, so the flow gets reduced and the fish can sleep at night. This is what the bottom looks like in...

I've used the same for a couple of my tanks. I believe the UV coating needs to be on top to work properly, so I used it upside down just in case. With a lid you're always going to loose at least a small percentage of light, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Not sure if carbon removes tannins... you'd surely be better off with some Purigen instead. As for removing medication, I've never used activated carbon, so can't help much, but if it was me I'd probably go for Seachem. I believe activated carbon is all about surface area, so if in doubt try to...

@mort is pretty much spot on. If it's fish only, it's pretty much up to salinity and temperature, if there are corals in there, it gets a bit more tricky. I recommend using the Ultimate Reef Forum if you need some more help with this.

More plants, less water, and a heat mat under the tank will do wonders. With the substrate so wet, you'll probably end up having mould and/or algae in the substrate before you even flooded. I would also leave 1 corner of the top a bit open to allow the tank to aerate a bit more.

Remember that if the sump pump shuts down, the main tank will drain down to the lowest pipe... so if you have the spraybar lower than the weir, the water will drain down to the spraybar level, and the sump needs to have enough extra room to hold all that water. And the same goes to the sump...

Seems like columnaris to me. I can see fin and tail rot starting in a couple of them.... it's all downhill (very slowly) from there. From my experience, the fish will keep behaving and eating normally, until they can no longer swim properly (fin rot), or can no longer eat (cotton mouth).

I believe you can "calibrate" that heater by moving the red pointer thingy. In my experience it is quite normal to have to adjust heaters to a different temperature to get what you want. My cheap inline heater is set to 30ºC, but the aquarium stays at 25ºC (and it's a 300W heater in a 20L tank).

Just bear in mind that the report gives you a max, min, and an average of results throughout the year. So, don't be amazed if the numbers from your tap don't match.
