    Fire Extinguisher Co2 killing fish?

Hi all, A quick question/ thought. How clean/ pure is the Co2 coming from my fire extinguisher setup? I ask as despite having prefect tested water quality all round, very low biomass, and text book fish acclimatisation, I seem to always lose a few fish in the weeks after adding them to my...

ADA Solar 1 , 150w halide bulb help needed!

Hi guys! The time has come and I need to replace the ADA NAGreen bulb in my fixture, it’s been in for about 7 years (5.5 more than recommended)🥶. I’ve strayed to note a serious drop off in growth rate. I really like the lamp , so don’t want to spend on a newer LED setup, and also am not...

How soon to dose EI after startup?

Hi all, apologies if this has already been answered somewhere. Tropica state not to start using ferts for 2-4 weeks after planting as they come with a ‘lunch pack’. is this really the case? When am I best to start dosing with EI after planting? ive had my filter circulating the water in...

Mikrogeophagus ramirezi - Where to buy top quality?

Hi all, I'm a few weeks of yet, but am looking to get a pair of German blue rams as title states. I've been doing some reading and am aware that a lot of the fish available at local fish stores are often somewhat diluted in colour/quality from generations of 'not so' selective breeding. Does...

Hi Castle, I made the pipes a couple of years back when i set up my first tank, a smaller 45p, I invested in a decent bender and bought some 12mm stainless 316 pipe, It was very easy once i had the correct tool, and i now have it at the ready should i want to make some new ones for a different...

    Tank Two - DOOA 60P

Thanks very much for the comments. Working towards getting the bark stripped off the wood and securing it down. Having a bit of an issue with the rocks on the right hand side edging forwards under the weight of the substrate. I’m wondering whether the best solution is to silicone the rocks to...

    Tank Two - DOOA 60P

With the setup complete I've been playing with hardscape. The plan is to place river sand in the front section with mosses attached to the overhanging branches, with some buce's in-between . I chucked in a base of ADA powersand and ramped up the substrate pretty high. I had a big gluing session...

Thanks for the advice guys. I will be going about removing the bark soon, and am still pondering the dry start. Where to place an in-line diffuser?

Hey all, I’ve ran an in-line diffuser on both sides of an Ada superjet in the past and both methods work fine. My preferred is on the outlet. Although I can see the minute bubbles in the tank, it’s a trade off I happily make against the additional noise made by the CO2 passing through the filter. ;)

A couple shots of the wood I collected from a freshwater lake a few years back. The problem I have is that I want to dry start. I don't therefore want to wait until after to see if they float. i'm thinking its best to flood for a while first with them submerged, and then glue/ tie down to the...

Quick update. No scaping as of yet, but a few hardware changes. I swapped out the wooden stand for a metal one that I welded up and got powder coated in white. Thanks for this Alto! I've had crack at both the yoghurt and twine methods in the past and had good success when used with the dry start method (never tried moss pad method). I always find however that even with a very strong emmersed growth, without the twine the moss gets leggy after...

The latest on the plumbing front are these Stainless hose couplings that I've been putting together (these will do exactly the same as the plastic Eheim ones on sale). It's a little bit deceiving. They aren't plumbed into the skirts, just currently resting on it. Lagoa Verde - 45P

Update Not much to report with the dry start. HC is doing particularly well in some areas, not so in others. The water in the tank from misting is beginning to appear at the level of the substrate, this seems to be sending it brown in places. The mosses are also doing well and seem to be...

    Lagoa Verde - 45P

Hi Ian, No your right, the mat doesn't cover 100% of the base of the tank (see photo). This is because the door on the cabinet is full height. The tank is therefore 'raised' the height of the mat above the door (3-4mm) as I have cut it back the depth of the door. I definately agree that...

Hi Rahms, thanks for the brownie points :) The 12mm pipe has proven great for me. The weight of the fixture initially wants to make the fixture sag. With a little persuasion upon first setting up I got it perfectly perpendicular and its been perfect ever since, no flex. Rather luckily I...

Hi folks, I've been running a low tech tank for a few months now. The lighting was never meant to be permenant as it is intended for a high tech setup I'm working towards. Hi guys, Thanks for getting back to me. Great to hear of your experience! I'm actually not creating my own pipes to cut costs though, more just to get exactly what I want. I'm going to require a sprayer design to reduce the velocity at which my filtered water re-enters the tank, as well as a...
