thanks for the advice! there is soil under the gravel but I suppose I don't really need it. I'll take it out.

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

thanks that's very kind of you. I will see if a can fix this one. it's new so I might return it and see if I can get a new one.

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

OK, removed the white washer and the pressure is now at 45psi but the solenoid is still not shutting off properly....sigh
  6. BexM

    Something in between.

òTank update: Everything seems to be growing well apart from the Bruce deep purple. The apple snails seem to have developed a taste for it and keep shaving the rhizome smaller and smaller. They may have stated taking a nibble at the others too. I've removed what's left of the deep purple and...

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

From what I've read if the working pressure is too high it can stop the solenoid closing properly and I think that might be happening. when I get a chance tomorrow I will have another look. It may just be a faulty solenoid but I found a good check list so I will go though and see if it is...

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

Bugger, this is starting to become a pita. I just wanted to add a little co2 to give my new set up a boost. I bought the regulator over a year ago but haven't really used it because the solenoid that it came with was broken and the fire extiguisher was over ten years old. Seems like I got...
  9. BexM

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

yes I think it does, I could add another washer and I think that might work, would it have to be nylon or could a metal one be used?
  10. BexM

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

I think you might be right :( guess I've wasted my cash. I wish I had just forked out for something new.
  11. BexM

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

it's not looking too hopeful, not quite what I expected. I can't really work out if there is any way of adjusting it. Any thoughts?
  12. BexM

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

I will have a look. It doubt it's too complicated, from what I imagine it will be a spring pushing on some sort of diaphragm or something similar. :nailbiting: Can't seem to email them at the moment but I will send them a message on the old Facebook

    thanks I will try.

    Co2Art working pressure too high?!

I have recently set up a fire extinguisher co2 set with a second hand regulator from Co2art and a new solenoid that arrived today. The solenoid is not switching off properly and I think it's because the pressure is 80psi. Unfortunately the pressure is set and I don't know how to adjust it. an...

    Dead Bucephalandra??

Thanks for the tip. I will move them all into the shade and see how they do. I may get some fully grown plants to replace them for now. I am dosing a small amount and adding a little co2 but I don't want to go too mad with that until my solenoid comes. There are so many different types! I'm...

    Something in between.

ooooh! I noticed this morning that the pinnatifida on the wood has little plants coming out the side. I'm very excited to see how it will grow. I also noticed that I scratched my glass quite a lot while cleaning the tank  they are very light scratches though so they can be polished...
  17. BexM

    Dead Bucephalandra??

I bought some in vitro bucephalandra "deep purple" and super glued it to some small stones. All the leaves have fallen off and my snails have removed all the dead matter. The rhizome is still green but they don't seem to be doing much. Is this just the plants adjusting to submerged conditions...

    Something in between.

Thank you, the fish don't seem keen on the lack of plants and light coloured substrate, it was overgrown before. Hopefully the dwarf sword should cover it up and the crypt balansae should grow longer and give them a little shade.

    Is my windowsill vase doomed?

I think Ludwigia polysperma would be OK too.
  20. BexM

    Is my windowsill vase doomed?

It looked good, shame about the algae. I think hydrocotyle tripartita would do well in there. I used to have Ludwigia repens "mini super red" in mine and that used do grow well and looked lovely, I got if from eBay so I don't know if that's the proper name for it.

Tank update: The Co2 is running quite low at the moment until I can afford a solenoid but it works just fine at the moment. I will do a video soon because I have no idea how to do macro photography. There is some new growth on a few plants and some crypt melt going down. The buce "deep purple"...

    Something in between.

I changed the title because this is no longer low tech. I've found in the past this tank always does much better with a little Co2. I have quite a few in vitro plants and two that prefer medium lighting so I really want them to have the best start. I'm hoping I can always adjust and slow things...

    Is my windowsill vase doomed?

+1 for the desk lamp because you can adjust the light. I had a large cylinder vase set up with an led daylight desk lamp and it was my most successfull tank...I miss it! I suppose you could do a mild bleach dip for the plants if you are worried but you may find the water changes and lower light...

I've come to realise that I'm a fickle and impatient human being :bored: I haven't had much luck with my tanks so far and I've spent quite a lot of cash redoing them now and then. All planted, I'm going to order more crypt lucens, C. walkeri and E. tenellus because it's looking very sparse at the the moment. Please excuse the mass of floating plants. I need to take them to my Nan's. I also need to learn how to take better photos with my phone.

    Something in between.

The Bucephalandra deep purple came!! it's in vitro grown so it's really tiny! I've glued them to some small pieces of slate so I can arrange then when I get round to rescaping the tank. The echinodorus tenellus also came in, it's been separated and popped in the gravel. It will have to be...

    Something in between.

I would love to try a dry start but the fish and plants will have to go into a big tub in the living room so the actual task of tearing down the tank and rescaping will need to be done ASAP or my three year old will be trying to get in there with them, but I am planning and researching this time...
  42. BexM

    Something in between.

plants have been ordered and the wood is soaking. I'm really taking my time instead of rushing it. I may try to mock up the hardscape outside of the tank so I know where to put everything when it comes especially to it so the fish will have minimal time in the holding tub.

nice! can't wait to see it planted. Do you know what type of rock you are using? lava rock?
  46. BexM

    Something in between.

Thank you, yes I was wondering about that. I was worried the light wouldn't reach the bottom because it's 29" deep. I will remove them and get some duck weed then. I'm hoping to avoid adding liquid carbon or co2 if I can help it. Been down that road already and I'd like to keep it simple this time.

HI, I've not been on the forum for a while. My 49 gallon planted tank has been sucking for quite some time now. I've put in 5 peppered corydora. They have been in for a couple of weeks now. I did two 90% water changes yesterday and cleaned the filter. I was shocked at how much dirt was in there. Really happy with how my nano cube is looking. It's funny because I try so hard with my big tank and it keeps going wrong but this nano is so easy!. Dirt Disaster!

I may have to get new gravel. I bleached it before and poured boiling water over it. I'm wondering If I should have use something on the plants like potassium permanganate. All I did was soak them in tap water and cut off some of the roots. Catching the fish is a real PITA.

Hello. I a while back I started having dirty water issues with my tank, worm casts on the gravel, dirt getting into the water colum and all over the plants. Signs of deficiency , E.I, floating plants.

Thanks Darrel That makes sense, i could always add the reflectors back if lower level plants look like they are struggling. Part of the reason i upped my lighting to t5 was because i was having trouble growing carpet plants like lilaeopsis mauritiana and i was told the t8s wouldn't penetrate...

Thanks for the reply sciencefiction. I'm hoping that any imbalances will be non existent now the tank is low tech and the growth is slow. I suppose i just need to be patient, stay consistent and give the plants time to recover. I really like the crypt undulata, hopefully they will grow new leaves.

Just thought i would update. I think Darrel may have been right but i really did not fancy messing around too much with the dosing and upgrading co2 to find out. Ok, let the water stand so it contains less co2? I do have a 5 gallon bucket I could use for that. I don't think I'm lightly stocked but I could probably skip a day or two feeding or feed smaller amounts.

Dosing half makes sense. I would like to ditch the diy but it's the only thing I've found to keep the bba under control.
  71. BexM

  72. BexM

Signs of deficiency , E.I, floating plants.

I was just thinking. If my lighting is now lower, do I still need to be dosing e.I at all? The only reason I tried t5s was I was told on another forum by quite a few people that t8s were not powerful enough my tank. All of these problems came about when I started adding ferts afters I removed...

Signs of deficiency , E.I, floating plants.

I suppose they could be burns but a lot of the leaves remain some distance from the lamps because of the flow, they get pushed to the front of the tank which has a thick glass brace. I will try an increase in potassium nitrate first for a few weeks and see how it goes. Thank you all for the help.

Thanks :) you're right. I might just stick to lowering the light. I'm fed up with the messing around . Would be nice just to do a low tech and just dose once every couple of weeks. I do think some people are missing the point though. The floating plants are not limited by co2 and they are...

I just can't seem to get the balance right :( Without the co2 I got bba, I read that that was due to fluctuating co2 levels when changing water. I tried less water changes, lots of smaller, water changes, Dirt. I really want to keep the tank stable but stuff keeps going wrong, I'm always...

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a drop checker and I have relied so far on ph/kh tests (not very accurate I know) I know that gas cylinders are safe, as I said I have done welding and brazing and have used them often. Well, what your saying makes sense but I found that I kept getting really bad bba and poor growth. I've lost a lot of plant so I tried excel for a while. It's too expensive along with the prime and food. I thought the diy method would be easier, one less thing to dose, cheaper and supposedly...

Signs of deficiency , E.I, floating plants.

Oh no :( it is mostly the new stuff and I just added a little to bulk it up because I couldn't afford another bag of porous stuff. Like I said our water is from limestone aquifers round here so that is most likely the cause.
