Thanks. So lookung them up further, all like lots of light and heat. I'm moved some salvinia into one of my tanks also. This is the problem tank with a crayfish that loves plants so let's see if they survive in there.

I'm seeing patches of hair algae form now. Haven't bought any fert tabs, think I'll just add trace and allow plants to be fed by fish/food and see how that goes. This is the plant with bulb like things which is suspect is a water hyacinth. No idea what this plant is. This is a much...

Free pond, then real work starts...

As said, I have ferts left over from when I did EI, and even more potential sources from marine keeping. What I don't know is, do I really need to use it? I think there is some kind of algae growth particularly around the filter exit, but my hope was more that surface plants will help restrict...

I forgot to say, I also got a pack of 3 floating plants which I've also added. I have yet to identify what they are. One has a large round structure at its core, another is leafy which sticks out of water, and the last one is fairly small (1cm) leafed. I need to take a picture of them some time...

This pond started about a couple months ago... I saw a free pond going in local facebook group, and grabbed it. It is about 6ft long, 3ft wide kidney shape. Estimated volume around 300L, so pretty small. It is dug about 6in into the ground in the hopes of giving it a little winter resistance. It...

I've neglected the tank further and the BBA is fighting back. Filter To Remove The Need For 'Prime'?

Well, running both pipes means you're using the RO unit as if it were a HMA filter after all. Just skip the membrane altogether, as the filtration will only be provided by the pre-filter stages.

Filter To Remove The Need For 'Prime'?

Both pipes? What does that mean? I used to run HMA when I had an Oscar tank so I could fill it directly, although I still used dechlorinator "just in case". A HMA filter is in essence an RO unit without the RO. In both cases it relies on you changing them at an appropriate interval so they keep...

Unknown problem with ember tetras. No one can identify it?

Just catching up from some time away. From the photos of the test results, there doesn't appear to be any major problem there. Unknown problem with ember tetras. No one can identify it?

In a mature tank ammonia and nitrites should be undetectable to any significant level as the filter and/or plants should process it into less harmful compounds. Also, as hard as the API test kit is, you should be able to narrow down the ball park better than "below 5ppm". For the ammonia test...

Unknown problem with ember tetras. No one can identify it?

Is this a new tank? That ammonia and nitrite shouldn't be there and is likely a major factor. Do a big water change as soon as you can (like 50%+), being careful to match temperatures. Trying medications is secondary to getting the water cleaned up!

I might start the question here then, but I was under the impression that extra CO2 can still benefit a low(er) light tank? Or am I going the wrong way once again by thinking, I've got the kit, might as well use it somewhere? I'll have to rummage around the invert subforum for ideas later. I've...

    Starting again...

After some thought I've decided to remove CO2 from my biggest freshwater tank, and set up a new tank instead. For a planted tank, I did everything backwards. It was fish first, plants where they would fit, but in no particular scheme. The fish liked to pull up any new plants which doesn't help...

    Fish flakes...do they expire?

Agreed with above. I do have a lot of tanks so most foods wont last in my house anyway. There will still be value provided by the food, but it may start to lack some of their nutritional value over time. I also like to mix types to help increase the possible coverage by different foods, as well...

Nutrient problems on a bigger scale

    Thinking about a reef tank

Of those corals I believe the hammer is the one that would be most sensitive to water parameters. I don't have one myself, but believe they don't need the highest of light levels. Softies tend to be pretty tolerant, although not all are. Test kit wise, at a minimum you need a way to measure...

    Thinking about a reef tank

I also hang about on Ultimatereef, although it is quite big so easier to get lost in the crowd there. It certainly doesn't have the small forum feel. Lighting wise, it also depends in part on what sort of corals you're after. I never used T5s on marine for much but two T5s didn't seem quite...
