    First timer's first journey...

That window behind the tank might cause too much light hitting the tank, which can cause algae. I think you should move more rocks to the front of the tank so that they aren't on the same "plane". It might make it look more natural too.

    Cycling 35l tank with AquaSoil

I started a low-tech tank with aquasoil about a week and a half ago. Changing 25% of the water every day stopped the plants from burning, which are then sucking up ammonia. It's still at 8 ppm though.

    Iwagumi Jungle

I'll be using water wisteria as a floater to soak up excess nutrients so that should also help with dimming the light. Cheers.

I thought one 24W bulb would be fine. I forgot to mention I'll be dosing Easy Carbo.

    Iwagumi Jungle

This is my first journal and also the first tank I've set up with the intention of keeping plants. I just got the tank today because the first one smashed in transit. Here are the specs: Tank- 60x30x30cm Lights- Allpondsolutions 2x 24W T5 using 1 6500K bulb Filter- Fluval U2 Heater- Hydor 50W...

Relationship between fish stocking levels and plant development with CO2

You would think that more fish would increase the level of carbon dioxide in the water because they breathe oxygen and excrete CO2 through their gills.

    Reduce Light intensity

If you are using fluorescent tubes then there are tinted plastic tubes to put them in, making them dimmer. A more expensive option is getting a dimmable ballast instead of the one you have currently. Or as said above, just use some floaters.

    DIY Water Changer Using Filter

That's along the lines of what I'm hoping to do. I might try a 10/13 mm hose and see if it fits on the outflow of the filter.

    Layout, planting, pruning etc

I always had to do that when I had some sort of myriophyllum species. It's a bit of a pain but ultimately it looks much better. Here's a link to an article on the subject: http://www.ukaps.org/index.php?page=a-general-guide-to-plant-maintenance

    DIY Water Changer Using Filter

Hi, I've read a bit about the python and it's probably the easiest and best thing to use, except that it's pretty expensive. If what I'm planning on doing works then I'm pretty sure I'll be able to attach it to the sink somehow instead of putting the system in a bucket. Thanks for posting.

    DIY Water Changer Using Filter

Hi everyone, I'm tired of having to lift buckets to shoulder height and spilling it everywhere so I decided to use an old Fluval 2 to pump water through an airline. I don't have any airline yet as I'm not sure what fitting to use on a square 9/12mm outflow. I tried attaching a 9/12mm circular...

    Low-Tech Iwagumi

Thanks for your reply Troi. I'm thinking of doing a hybrid of both an iwagumi and jungle, using large rocks but more natural and wild planting. I'm using ADA aquasoil and low/medium lighting with EasyCarbo. My tank hasn't arrived yet because I had to choose a different supplier as my original...

    Low-Tech Iwagumi

Hi all, Couldn't decide whether to make a jungle or iwagumi so I decided to do sort of a mixture of both. It's my first time making an iwagumi and this was after a few attempts. Sorry for the low DOF, the room was pretty dark. Please let me know what you think. Cheers

    Arcadia Classica Stretch vs 15 W T8

Ooft Ian those lights look a bit out of budget. Ryan, do you think for a 60x30x30cm aquarium that one would suffice? Bit cheeky that the dimmer comes seperately. EDIT: These lights look to be for hooded aquariums, which mine won't be.

    Arcadia Classica Stretch vs 15 W T8

Thanks for the replies folks. That's sort of disappointing to see. I was hoping that these lights would be a least medium height. I guess I'll be better off looking at other alternatives such as T5s, as I'm not really willing to spend over £70...

Hi all, I'm planning on setting up a new 60cm tank using medium light, Easycarbo and aquasoil. On my current 60cm, I have an old 15 W T8, which seems like low light to me. http://www.charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk/classica-led-stretch-freshwater-500mm-p-16082.html Has anyone had experience with...

That looks like it could be my moss Darrel, thanks for the reply. I forgot to point out that I never actually bought this moss, it just appeared and has become a problem for me. I have a small vivarium that has been set up for a few months, which had died back when I went on holiday in July, but it has been recovering nicely. Bridge Cameras for macro pictures

I'd go for a DSLR. I just bought a nikon d3100 with 18-55 lens for £300. You can't get really close but the detail is great when you crop the photos. If you went to spend less you can get an older camera d60 or d80. Any reputable DLSR you buy from a reputable company will take really nice...

The Green Machine- a bit disappointed.

I think what he means is that a local would have the benefit of visiting often, and therefore knows what the store is usually like. That's a shame about TGM though, I heard great things. Was Nature's Chaos any good?

I don't know what the bacteria is, but I know you can remove it with more surface agitation and water changes. I subscribed to your blog too. :)

    What carpet plant to use...

I believe that eleocharis parvula lives in low light/CO2, but spreads and grows really slowly. You could start it off emersed, then flood it when you have a nice carpet. Diana Walstad did this with HC in a low tech bowl.
  47. Lewis G

    What carpet plant to use...

Saggitaria subulata is a nice carpet plant, but it grows slowly. Moss might be a nice choice too. For helanthium tenellum (echinodorus tenellus) the leaf will simply die if you trim it.

After seeing some really nice emersed tanks recently, I decided to give it a go. I had an old 25 litre tank kicking about and set it up in front of my bed on top of a hamster cage stand. Lamp for Growing HC in a 14cm cube?

The only thing I am concerned about is the kelvin rating of the bulb. At 2700k it doesn't seem very efficient for plants. Although I think I'm giving more than enough light anyway, so it should be fine. I'm thinking about using 2 of these lamps for a 25 litre emersed setup. Is that OK for...

Hi all. I'm looking for a source of lighting to grow some emersed HC in a 14cm cube as a little house decoration. I've never grown HC before, and have never grown any aquatic plants emersed so this is pretty new to me. I'm looking for a source of lighting for my project and I think a...
