That window behind the tank might cause too much light hitting the tank, which can cause algae. I think you should move more rocks to the front of the tank so that they aren't on the same "plane". It might make it look more natural too.

I started a low-tech tank with aquasoil about a week and a half ago. Changing 25% of the water every day stopped the plants from burning, which are then sucking up ammonia. It's still at 8 ppm though.

I'll be using water wisteria as a floater to soak up excess nutrients so that should also help with dimming the light. Cheers.

You would think that more fish would increase the level of carbon dioxide in the water because they breathe oxygen and excrete CO2 through their gills.

If you are using fluorescent tubes then there are tinted plastic tubes to put them in, making them dimmer. A more expensive option is getting a dimmable ballast instead of the one you have currently. Or as said above, just use some floaters.

In my terrarium the eleocharis is very slow growing, but it grew quicker when submersed.

If I were you I'd wait. It will be easier to plant the tank without water or fish and will be less stressful with regard to cycling and bacteria.

For my emersed tank I'm using cling film with some holes and spraying every few days. I've started to slowly remove the cover because the plants are established.

If there are holes in the leaves then it sounds like a potassium defiency. What plants are you using? How much light do you have? Are you using ferts or CO2?

I don't know what the bacteria is, but I know you can remove it with more surface agitation and water changes. I subscribed to your blog too. :)

I believe that eleocharis parvula lives in low light/CO2, but spreads and grows really slowly. You could start it off emersed, then flood it when you have a nice carpet. Diana Walstad did this with HC in a low tech bowl.

Saggitaria subulata is a nice carpet plant, but it grows slowly. Moss might be a nice choice too. For helanthium tenellum (echinodorus tenellus) the leaf will simply die if you trim it.

Vallisneria is one hard water plant, but that's the only one I can think of.

I would think that you only had to keep the humidiity up around the moss and keep it wet.
