    tmc signature 60 planted

If you're only planting the gavel surface you're missing a trick George. You seem to be planting a field. Get some wood in there to create height and shadow, some Anubias, mosses and Java fern on the wood. Crypts in the shadows...etc etc. After all your tank is 45cm high as well as deep...

Do all aquarium LED lights work ?

Said 'aquatic gardener' obviously had a very tenuous grasp on how light works and more worryingly, how the plants he flogs grew. He seems to no longer be under that delusion as he now sells LEDs. His plants are none the worse. Light is light, sun, T5, T8, compact fluorescent, metal halide...

    Handmade wood furniture

The main thing is to check that the top is absolutely flat. Side to side or front to back isn't really a problem. Its when one corner, or diagonally opposite corners are out that you get twisting stress. Your tank will hold approximatly 250l of water. That's 250kg. If there is a twist or a...

    Power head, type and position...

Looking good! Many use a piece of not too dense foam wrapped around the pipe that flows into the filter. It works as a mechanical prefilter, is very easy to remove and clean and hugely increases the time between filter cleans. Just make sure it doesn't restrict the flow as its only there to...

  39. James O

    Power head, type and position...

First off, all that media is killing your flow. The polishing pads can go, unless you have large amounts of particulate matter in the water column. They REALLY strangle the flow. The rest is questionable. All bacteria require is a surface area. They don't give a monkeys about fancy names...
  40. James O

    Power head, type and position...

What media is in your filters? You might be able to up the flow with no loss in filtration. Also you're not looking for a washing machine. Just a gentle mix so there's no need to go mad. I think you could achieve this with the two filters.

    A Very Lazy Man....

Planning on using a single Kessil 160 with programmer over a 60cm tank. I can be lazy on the light at the touch of a button :D
  42. James O

    Power head, type and position...

Sorry, meant to add 'angle the jets diagonally so they hit the front glass at different places'. When the jet hits the glass it will explode in all directions but because it is an oblique angle it shouldn't mess up your substrate too much.
  43. James O

    A Very Lazy Man....

Thanks guys :) Lazy EI here I come! I was thinking of applying the 'lazy man' effort to co2 as well. More than nothing but less than maximum should still have better results that nowt. Yay! Go team lazy
  44. James O

    A Very Lazy Man....

All my tanks are pretty much lo tech planted holding tanks at the moment. Places to squirrel away plants and a few fish until my grand design comes to fruition. They are probably all about 1/3 plants, extremely dense planting (obviously not 1/3!solid mass but you know what I mean)...
  45. James O

    Power head, type and position...

Spray bars are great for a general mix but when you have large pieces of hard scape they fall down. Amano never uses them after all..... Maybe try putting both outlets in the rear right. The speed should be enough to mix the entire tank. It'll probably be a little brutal, in which case try...

Best way to cycle a second filter

Bacteria will move in on day one. To get a second filter going simply run it in a cycled tank or add some existing media to it. When moving to a new tank, move the existing one over and just add the new one. Bacteria will do the rest. Bacteria colonies will only grow as large as food source...

  69. James O

    Wavemaker Placement

We're not talking about running them empty :D The stuff that comes with the filters is usually far more flow restrictive than necissary and is far more expensive than necissary. Filter bacteria have no idea what they grow on. Little plastic army figures, Lego bricks, pot scrubbers etc etc...
  70. James O

    Wavemaker Placement

The APS is probably giving you around 1500lph or less depending on head height, spraybar and media. Stuffing filters with densely packed media is counter productive and reduces flow. What's in yours filters? The 2229 quotes 550lph actual output. Wrapping foam around the feed too the filters...

You can. But you won't have cycled tanks. The dirty water will help jump start bacteria in the media but you won't be doing a fishless cycle. You'll be doing a fish in cycle and that's not really ideal. If your looking at breeding that might not be a great start  Just be patient. Cycle...
