Change the filter in a tank

Have to agree with the others, the media you already have already has the sufficient amount of bacteria to digest the ammonia nitrites etc, so all your doing is moving it over to the new filter :)

    New nano vivarium

Looks sweet pal! The moss will take ages to start growing, it did on mine, and still hasnt grown much, but it should grow much faster in yours once it gets going because of the higher humidity! Good luck with it!
  3. Dominic

Plant ID for my lovely plants. :-)

Ah man, gutted! Haha, sweet man they should nibble on it as it starts to rot away :) nice healthy snack!

Looks sweet man, i love your driftwood! Perfect for some apistos to hide in or some sort of dwarf cichlid ;)

    Dom's First Vivarium! 24x18x13

Are they computer fans!? Damn i didnt realise that! Haha, wouldnt they break from the excess water? Do you have any links to tutorials on how to make fans? I am planning on having an automatic fog machine/humidifier (not quite a misting system, right?) and i will be spraying manually too...

    Dom's First Vivarium! 24x18x13

So you think fans will be needed too? I will put up a post on dendroboard asking lol :P Just to make sure! Fans can't cost that much anyway... can they? And if i drilled the bottom, it would be under the false bottom, with a piece of pvc siliconed over the hole. This means that once the water...

    Dom's First Vivarium! 24x18x13

I've already thought most of it out guys! I am planning on getting -ADA style light frame going around the tank to suspend the light- I don't want the light in the actual tank, it would probably fry the frogs! Haha -12mm Perspex/acrylic lid made a few inches shorter than needed so I can fit in...

    My shallow tank.

All sounds normal to me, nothing to worry about! It will clear up as you go on :) As for the plants, I found with my tank it was a lot of trial and error. Some didn't work, some worked better than others! Good job with the eleocharis btw, i've noticed that at my MA but they always seem to be...

    Dom's First Vivarium! 24x18x13

Haha cheers man! At first i was contemplating whether to post it or not, but after seeing a couple more vivarium builds on here.... whats one more ;) And yes, i've always loved the idea of recreating nature in a 'glass box'. Something that's stuck with me ever since being small. I am still in...

    Dom's First Vivarium! 24x18x13

Right, after a few months of thinking and considering getting a vivarium for some dart frogs, I've made the decision- I'M GONNA DO IT! I am beyond excited about this vivarium, and this will be documented from the very beginning stages. Right now, it's just an ordinary ROMA 90 aquarium and...

Sweet vivarium man! Haha i'll take it off of zak if he's offering? :P
  13. Dominic

    New nano vivarium

I noticed this on dendroboard! It looks sweet mate! I have started a journal for a vivarium myself but wasnt sure whether to post on here considering this is an 'aquatic plant society' lol :P
  14. Dominic

Plant ID for my lovely plants. :-)

Haha sorry I don't know much about selaginellas but enough to recognise it! Haha! I have considered getting it before, it does look really good. Got any pictures of your nano vivarium parotet?

    Re mineralising Ro water.

Ohhh you lucky guy, you got a fixed water bill :L run the RO unit too just for kicks hahaha
  16. Dominic

    Re mineralising Ro water.

Oh man, you already have a tds unit? :/ you could probably sell it on if you wanted to, but we probably saved you a lot of money in terms of your water bill ;) And yeah man, whenever i go up to (south) wales, water always tastes so much nicer up there haha tastes fresher, it's soft water up...

    Re mineralising Ro water.

Sounds perfect to me mate! I wish i had your water -_- haha!
  18. Dominic

Plant ID for my lovely plants. :-)

The last one looks like a selaginella erythropus 'ruby red'. It is a terrestrial spike moss which cant grow underwater i'm afraid, there is a species of selaginella that can, but they are rare as hell and i dont think that it is this type. If you still want to keep it it'd do better in a humid...
  19. Dominic

    Re mineralising Ro water.

I'd have to agree with sacha, it doesn't sound like you need it. I'd assume the TDS was low and that you have soft water. I use tap water (based in high wycombe) and the pH is around 8.4 and the tds is off the scale (300dh +) and my tank has been fine. I think it matters more as to whatever fish...

    Dom's Jar of Honey

Some underwater and full tank shots! Sorry some of them are rubbish, i'm having a real tough time getting decent pictures of the fish, but you should see some photos of my group of honey gouramis together if you look real close! Haha! Hope you all like it!
  21. Dominic

    Dom's Jar of Honey

Oh i see mate, I would honestly own a zoo if i had the time money or space! Haha! But cheers man its good to know you like my tank :)
  22. Dominic

    Dom's Jar of Honey

You totally should, man! And thank you, i really appreciate it! I still need to get some pictures of those damn honey gourami! Cheers!

    Hardscaping materials

Hello, i'm probably no help here but i just wanted to say that sketch follows the rule of thirds well and would for sure make a great scape! I have to second you on the dragon stone, truly one of the best textures to work with.
  25. Dominic

    My shallow tank.

haha ace man! Theres loads of types of bromeliads mate, some dont even like to touch water, so i have no idea what exact species it is! Haha! Yeah man same, all the fish that do draw me need some sort of specific care requirement or exact water parameters, which is too difficult for me, lol...
  26. Dominic

    My shallow tank.

CPD's sound sweet man! What about some sort of centerpiece fish? Tom had a peacock goby, but that's assuming you dont have any shrimp apart from large amanos? What about some sort of apistogramma? I have a group of honey gourami in mine, but they just dont feel 'prominent' enough, to me. Have...

    Dom's Jar of Honey

Since the previous update, i have made a number of changes. The circulation pumps have been unclogged and are running fine now. No more fish losses ever since, apart from a pencilfish that decided to jump out of the tank! -_- i think the honey gouramis may have just been a dodgy batch. I have...

    Tom Barr Buce tank!

This is awesome, one of the most unique tanks i have seen, and has really made me want to give buces a try in a similar fashion. Everything, in terms of hardscape, plants, livestock and locations mingle and suit each other perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
  32. Dominic

    Growing glosso

Your telling me! How i long for one of those beautiful, perfect, cleanly cut iwagumis, and some space for one -_- haha
  33. Dominic

    Growing glosso

ahh i see man fair enough, i'm just chucking together a few low-maintenance 'storage crate planters' together and leaving them outside and placing a few of my spare trimmings in there to see how things get on! :) hoping to grow one full of HC or glosso!
  34. Dominic

    Growing glosso

I use natural sunlight though legytt, isnt that the strongest you can get? However it is on the windowsill so is probably getting that effect from trying to grow towards the window...

Got my shipment of plants in the other day, the utricularia Livida looks fricking awesome and with flowers! I'm glad I bought it, I might keep it in the cling film cover it came in, and just conceal the cling film in the tank to keep the nutritious substrate separate from the nutrient-hating...

    Adding nitrate to stocked aquarium

Does this mean, in terms of fish more sensitive to nitrate, i.e marine fish and corals etc (sorry, unrelated topic) are they more sensitive to the conversion of ammonia to nitrite to nitrate?
  38. Dominic

    Adding nitrate to stocked aquarium

Hello mate, just wanted to add that i do not trust nitrate test kits much, I usually rely more on observing the health of both fish and plants. Just my opinion! Hope everything pans out :)

  41. Dominic

    Above Ground pond

hello mate, me and my dad built a pond some 12 years ago, i was around 5 at the time and my dad has now passed and i cannot remember how he built it, but it is raised roughly 3ft and built in a corner. It has what i can only describe as wooden 'fencing' around the edges, and i know we dug a hole...

    Tom's Poco Pozo

Exactly the same happened to me tom- a day or so after adding my beckfordi pencils, they began spawning! Never saw any fry though, probably got eaten. But since theres only four fish in your tank, which is massive, you should see some survivors! They are absolutely awesome looking fish, very...

Doubts regarding the transition between two planted tank projects

I've done things like this numerous amounts of times before. What I did (if fish are moved too) is- -grabbed a bucket, and then i bagged the fish up (allow plenty of space for the fish so the water doesn't foul too quickly, 1 part water to 2 parts air for good oxygen supply) -Put the filter...

    Tom's Poco Pozo

Beautiful mate. Absolutely beautiful. You decided what fish are going in yet?
  45. Dominic

    Tom's Poco Pozo

Haha alright man cheers! Don't worry about it haha! I had a feeling it was one of those plants... E. Parvula is labelled 'easy' by tropica, yet i've never completely agreed with that statement haha.
  46. Dominic

    Tom's Poco Pozo

Oh damn thats awesome! I just can't seem to get mine to either live or grow, it just dies back. Any tips? :P :L
  47. Dominic

    Tom's Poco Pozo

Hahaha i kind of like it! Can just imagine something massive like an arowana or something poking it's head out of the darkness! This is looking sweet regardless! What plant is that floating on the top? Thats not eleocharis is it?
  48. Dominic

    Dom's Jar of Honey

Cheers man! That was the sort of look i was hoping for! Hopefully it will look even better further down the line :D

Update time! The other week I bought three Juncus Spiralis to be added to my tank. There are also now 18 ember tetra. I also added a betta today from work that I could NOT resist- he's a beautiful bluey-black and orange colour. Sorry for the crap photo of him- I think i may buy a better camera...

I've been looking for those but couldn't find them anywhere! Mind i think they would be too big for my tank though. They will look great in yours though pal. Tom- i've had a little idea niggling in the back of my head in terms of the sun roof lighting- Wouldn't it be awesome if, instead of...

    Fluval Spec Light transformer

The other day i got two ex-display fluval specs really cheap at work (£35 for the two) with all the bits and bobs. However, one of the specs has the light transformer missing. I thought i'd take them anyway as i was saving over £100 on them. I cannot find any transformers for the fluval spec...

Green Pekoe Pond - 40 litres

I have been keeping an eye on this thread, probably one of my favourite tanks! So natural looking. What type is that fern growing on the emersed twigs?
  58. Dominic

    Dom's Jar of Honey

I made something new for my tank last week, it is a little 'root' feature for the emersed portion that i hope to get some nice pilea involucrata growing on with some nice mosses. I also added an orchid to it- Haraella Retrocalla. Here is a step by step on how i made it- First- i cut off a piece...

    55L Nano Aquascape

I can't i'm afraid mate, however my first thought was monoselenium tenerum when you mentioned a 'lighter' moss. And yeah, stay away from riccia mate, its a nightmare! x_x
  61. Dominic

    55L Nano Aquascape

This looks great mate, i really like the look of the sand. Maybe some more HC or glosso growing in and around the rocks to soften the contrast? Also, stick some moss on those emersed twigs!

Interesting info about mosses for DSM and emersed growing

Great article mate! just went out and grabbed some pleurocarps from the garden for my moss wall, and am now removing the clump of acrocarp moss i put in there a while back- was wondering why it wasnt doing great! Cheers again!
  69. Dominic

    Improvement needed on 250ltr tank

Bristlenoses arent the most 'plant-friendly' fish in the world, large, hungry, and clumsy, meaning plants can easily be eaten and uprooted. have you considered setting up a seperate tank for them or anything?
  70. Dominic

    Improvement needed on 250ltr tank

Trimming the stems often will result in compact, bushy growth, therefore looking a little more organised.

    My nano paludarium

I got a 100x100cm for around 25 quid so thats an extremely good price, i'd go for it mate. And parotet, i think the winter lighting should be fine. I grew a 30x60cm tray of lilaeopsis brasilensis through winter by the windowsill just fine. What i have noticed, though, is too wet conditions and...

This is looking awesome mate, how often do your orchids flower? truly beautiful. Also in regards to xaxim, i've no experience with it, but i use hygrolon and it does stay wet all the time. Okay i shall do that, thanks! As for the humidity- i know people which have kept peppermint in these kinds of setups and they have been fine, as for the oregano- i'm surprised it's doing so well. This is sort of an experiment, and i chucked a couple of plants in, and the oregano seems to be...

It is aquariumplantfood mate. Oh i see mate, wouldnt algae issues arise if i dosed too much? So for example, start with dosage 3x per week, wait for up to 6 days to see any signs of healthy growth. If healthy growth is present, then decrease to say 2.5x per week, and then so on? Am i right here?
  82. Dominic

Awesome, so the guidelines say dose 3x per week 10ml every 50 litres or something like that, should i dose 10ml every 50litres once a week? And should I dose micros too? How do 10 percent water changes work? Surely that removes nutrients from the water column? I normally do around 10-30...
