Enough said here I think. You get people who dont care about the health and welfare of their fish on any and every forum, thats just the way some people are. How people treat their fish is no reflection on this forum or indeed is it in anyway the result of what this forum promotes. If someone...

    First Iwagumi

Looks good for a first bash, the central pointy rock esp. The only thing I would say is that the smaller, flatter rocks might get hidden by the planting? Just a thought. Sam

lower water levels for comps? legal?

I cant honestly say I know, but quite frankly, you cant tell you have anyway, so I wouldn't worry! given the lengths some of the top aquascapers go to when taking photos, reducing the water level is the least of your worries. Sam

    IAPLC 2010 TOP 27

18 is the most interesting for me, I love the shape and curve of the wood. Some Im not really sure about, but that could also just be the way the photos look. Sam
  13. T

My first 'real' attempt at aquascaping

Yep, the wood is very nice :) How about just having the wood on its own? I think a carpet of hairgrass or something would look cool with that bit of wood emerging out of it. Sam

    local wood?

I wouldn't use 'green' pieces only those that are very dried. Also, might b worth soaking them for a few weeks in a bucket or something just to be sure. Boiling them would probably also be a worthwhile safeguard from any potential nastiest. Sam

Group shipping buy for Manzanita driftwood from Tom Barr

Yeh there is onward postage as well I guess, but that should be too much and I guess overall its cheaper than buying it. Who's gonna stump up for the initial postage? £200 is a fair investment. Sam

    60cm Iwagumi

As its a small tank I'd be tempted to just have three rocks, the three on the left that make the path, they look cool. Also how about a small patch of HC on the front left corner? It looks like it could use a bit of planting just to completed the scape? Hope that helps. Sam
  27. T

Caught the bug, my second tank

Take out the large left rock and just have the three large rocks with two small ;) Sam
  28. T

Caught the bug, my second tank

Thats a quality scape! :) I know what you mean about the HC it can be tricky sometimes. Its just a case of finding the 'sweet spot' in the tank and it takes off like wild fire! BTW is the rock on the left two close together or one? To my eyes it looks like you've got four rocks in there and...

Caught the bug, my second tank

Hi just out of interest, what lighting do you have and how much? Your HC looks a bit sorry, and I've had it looking exactly the same. Reducing the lighting did the trick, either by having it higher or having one less bulb. It was as if it couldn't couple with the amount of the Iight I had...

Please help me improve my tank!

Don't bin the wood, just perhaps reposition it. It'd be better on one side IMHO :) for the time being, try to cultivate the stems, i.e. by cutting the top half off and replanting it, there by doubling the amount you have. That's a free way of getting lots more plants pretty quickly. Sam
  40. T

Please help me improve my tank!

You need more order to things, i.e. the some plants planted close together and the wood does little for the scape at the moment. I would also get a load more plants in there. That way they will have more of an impact and will likely also make it easier to see what works and what doesn't :)...
  41. T

    Critique needed please!

Yeh, for me you need fewer rocks and more variation in size and spacing. I would also try putting one of the smaller pieces of wood on the far right over on the left side to balance it up? Try and see, might not work in reality. Hope that helps :) Sam

  48. T

    Granite.....

Granite is igneous if I remember rightly? So would think it would be fine. Its not a lime or sand stone so should inert and OK in the tank. BTW which Lafarge site do you work at? I've been to quite a few of them with my job! Sam EDIT - could look really nice is a tank. Be different too.

    Scape/planting ideas needed.

Unless you are wiling to keep on top of pruning the leaves, I tend to think Lotus plants are really only for big tanks as they can just get so big they dominate the scape. If you can tame them though, the red is stunning when the plant is healthy. Sam

    help with aquascaping

Yeh I agree re the stones. Think you could use some midground plants to grade it more from front to back. Its a bit stark at the moment i.e. lots of tall plants at the back which gives it height but needs some shorter ones in the front. Sam

Oh crap, thats a real shame Gareth. Think you have two choices. Rip it all apart and start again or battle through and let the plants sort the algae out. Which they can and will in time. If you ever feel like giving up read my nano journal over on TFF, its taken me two years to get that tank...

Love the path way, esp at the back where the really steep adjacent rocks give it a real sense of huge mountains. You'd feel very small walking along that path. Sam
  91. T

    Fred's 80cm tank

That Ech is huge! Re the plants, how about a sag carpet? I find them very hardy, if a little unruly sometimes and you have to keep on top of them re pruning by they make a useful carpet that is probably easier to maintain than riccia. Having said that, with the lighting you have you could...
