Just like to add i had a 4x2x2 build by ND aquatics about 5 years ago. Really wasnt impressed with the build quality, lead times and the tank was built incorrectly according to the specs i supplied. HOPEFULLY they are alot better now.

egg crate is the best thing. its sppreads the weight really well and wont affect yoour substrate level anyway, becuase the extra you will need to cover it, is the stuff you save from the space it takes up in the first place! plus, plants love it as the roots can grip onto it and really take hold. :)

how big is the cube? (dimensions, litres) if its only a short holiday like xmas you will probably be fine (could as if you can nip in once to feed them or something.. but over the summer when its 5+ weeks, if the tank is small enough, why not take it home?

have you tried bleach? i use an old mug and bleach everything inc my DC. then i leave it to soak for a day or two with clean water. (plus a good rinsing) in that time i have a cheap DC in my tank just to allow me to keep an eye.
