Adding extra light to my aquarium

why do you want to add more? i wouldnt go with more otherwise you will need to start injecting CO2. If you want to grow 'harder' plants then add CO2 and dose all the nutrients required and you will be able to grow any plant anyway.

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

That si "full" EI mixture then, so you wont need to change it. The tubes are high output then, from what i have read, FQ is just how the code their tubes.

*goes to dig up old PM's* lol I think i gave you half doses, but for a 30g tank: 1/4 tsp KNO3 x3 per week 1/16 tsp KH2PO4 x3 per week 1/32 tsp trace x3 per week That is "full" EI so you wont (or shouldnt) need more than that, CO2 will probably need to be raised slightly, I dont think the...

If you do upgrade, i would only run the 2 x 24w T5 (1.5wpg). if you run CO2 and dose sufficient amounts of nutrients then you will be able to grow any plant. The deeper penetration will help with the cabomba too.

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

same, i am not sure if it is one of those things that just gets spread around and then becomes stuck like nutrients cause algae, i havent found a definitive answer on here or the barr report which is the first 2 places i look lol.
  17. A

    actinic lighting vs algae growth

Is it fact or myth that actinic lighting promotes algae growth? I know plants can use blue wavelengths, but from what i have read "they can only use so much of the light, because they also need red wavelengths to grow/ photosynthesise efficiently, so this gives algae the edge" from that, it...

How do I know if my tank is a Low Light Tank

as a very basic rule we use Watts per gallon (WPG) anything at, or under 1wpg is classed as low light, 1.5wpg medium, and 2wpg is high. It is hard to calculate as there is different diameter tubes, whic throws it off by quite a lot. To get an accurate measurment you really need to use a PAR...

    Lighting...Your thoughts/suggestions

Hi, there isnt noticeable advantages using specific plant growth tubes, so go for what you want. Seeing as you have 3 tubes (lot of light!) then i would use a different kelvin, to balance the colour out a bit more. Take a look at the sticky at the top of this page for some examples.
  21. A

What would you do? Thanks for the help. With update.

Re: What would you do? Plan A or B, simplified WPG is calculated providing you have reflectors. If you dont have reflectors then it will be lower. You can just simply add a reflector then say the tube will have 10% higher output - it doesnt work like that unless i am missing something? The...

    reflectors

1.1wpg T5 is fine for most plants providing CO2 & nutrients are up to scratch, this iw the way more people are goin gthese days, and some even having success with plants such as HC. high CO2 is the key.
  26. A

    reflectors

The WPG is calculated with reflectors added. SO you will only get 0.7wpg if you use reflectors, dont use them and it will be less.

I take it you are using a pressurized system? the DC changes colour as CO2 gasses from the water, and into the DC. Overtime the DC solution pH lowers and changes colour. If it changes to yellow over the course of the day, this is because the levels are slowly rising, and it is normal. Mine...

    Tube Identification!

It is a powercompact T5 light (PC T5) Have you tried lampspecs for cheap tubes? If by 'higher' you mean higher wattage then you can only go to what the ballast says which from the 2nd pic is 18w. If you buy a higher rated tube you will still only get 18watts of light out of it.

    WPG? T5's V T8's and/or T12's ?

This might help a bit: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=2271&p=23845#p23845 16hrs is to long, most people use an 8-10hr photperiod, 12hours being the absoloute max. You can see when a plant has had enough light because some species close their leaves to stop recieving extra light.
  52. A

    WPG? T5's V T8's and/or T12's ?

The shop was right, T5's are 80% more efficient, if you want you can work out the correct sum like you have done or most people just double their answer then take a bit off for quick.

yes it is overkill, unless you can provide sufficient CO2, nutrients & turnover which i doubt you can.
  56. A

how many hours of illumination is too many?

plants need a rest aswell as fish. There will become a point at which the plant can do no more and it wont be able to carry salts around and it will die. 8-10hrs is fine. EDIT: typing error - I mean salts not slats lol
  57. A

    39w T5's

it depends on the colour you are after: pink/ red - <4000k green - 4000-8000k white - 10 000-12 000k blue - 12 000k> I am just generalising with those figures, so choose a combination which will show off the fishes & plants colours off best.
  58. A

    39w T5's

    Have you tried Lampspecs?
  59. A

    39w T5's

You could still add 1 or 2 more tubes on if you wish, take a look at this thread here: Setting up a higher tech tank
  60. A

    39w T5's

i would stick with just 2 x 39w tubes then (1wpg), and T5's give almost double the output to T8's so it will still be higher than this.
  61. A

    39w T5's
