    FX5 or 2080 pro?

you can just use a powerhead to bring the 10x turnover up. I use a Tetratec EX1200 (1200l/ph) & a 2300l/ph koralia on my 216l. Much cheaper option.

Bio Chem Zorb in planted tank

carbon only removes small amounts of nutrients, so you will be safe to use it
  3. A

    Carbon??

It takes minimal amounts of nutrients out of the water column, but not enough to do any damage. Most just use it for bateria to colonise on due to a large surface area.

    Smallest Circulation pump

what size tank is it for? it is reccomended you aim for 10x turnover as a minimum.
  5. A

How much L/H would I aim for?

The 10x guideline takes into account the filter reduction. I find for small tanks such as yours, i go for 10x, but on larger tanks where it is harder to distribute the flow evenly, aiming for 15-20x is more efficient.

    High output filter

no, it comes with standard out puts but you can buy spray bars. I think Clive just bought some pond hose and drilled a few holes in here and there. H has posted some pictures up before but i cant find them, if he reads this he may repost them again  George used something like a 305, so...

    High output filter

in large tanks it gets harder to disperse the flow evenly. imagine 300lph on a 30litre tank, thats easy, but blasting 4000lph across a 400l tank gets hard. i would get 2 filters, so you have 1 intake either end for maximum efficiency in debris uptake, then get a koralia for extra flow needed...

External Filters- buying cheap any pitfalls?

what is your budget? There are some pretty cheap filters about. I have bought 2nd hand twice. I had heard of their good customer service so i decided to...

Aeration - Please help to clarify

    1) BGA is caused by low nitrates, ammonia spikes, organic waste, dirty filters, poor flow, and poor maintenance UV sterilisers only stop free floating algae cells, BGA doesnt pass through the UV, hence why it doesnt make a difference ;) 2) normal, if you want to stop this then run it 24/7 3)...

    tetratec ex600- reviews please

yeah, all tetratec EX models get excellent reviews except the EX2400.
  25. A

    where can i buy these

buy a large sponge and make one yourself, or wrap some netting around the intake which IMO would be better as it wont slow the flow rate down too much. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Filter-Guard-Aqua ... 1|294%3A50

    Tetratec EX1200 Media question

the water is taken to the bottom, the pulled up though the media, back to the top, so ideally you want purigen last (at the top), where the water will be the cleanest (of waste) so it doesnt get clogged up.

Hi, I have bought a 2nd hand EX1200 but it comes with no media or handbook, i have downloaded the PDF version off the website and it shows 2 foam sponges being able to fit into 1 tray, although they dont look that deep IMO :?: So how many sponges can 1 basket hold? Thanks.

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

Yes it is 1ppm, you could try raising it to 22ml, It should work, if you get a powerhead then point it towards the front glass, or currently, point your filter to the front so it hits the glass and runs down.
  33. A

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

low levels of phosphate can cause GDA, many people have success when raising to 2-3ppm What fert are you using and when are you dosing? If it is dry powders then please state the quantities mixed up. Thanks.
  34. A

    Koralia 3, in a 4' tank?

koralia's are much better due to them having a large grill which dissipates the flow over a larger area, It will be fine IMO, you could get away with a K2 which is 2300l/ph if you wish.

Setting up a “higher” tech planted tank

the affects are minimal, you probably wont even notice them. you may kill a few, but there are millions of bacteria which are fully cpable of carrying out their job, and they are quick at multiplying if anything does go wrong. :)
  37. A

Setting up a “higher” tech planted tank

you are changing water, the bacteria is in the filter like you said and the only time this is affected is when you clean the media (which you dont need to do every day)

    doing away with filters.

It depends on the stocking, lightly stocking the tank will mean less ammonia being produced so the beacteria in the filter along with the plants will be able to help keep the levels down.

    Super flow!

    1) get a 1 litre jug, 2) time it how long it takes to fill (usually seconds) 3) 3600 (total seconds in 1hr) / seconds taken to fill up eg. 3600/ 30 = 120l/ph
  65. A

    Super flow!

i dont, that is what i think the maximum that I would go ;) (see below quote), as i dont see the point, all i am bothered about is for my plants to grow, which they do well enough with just 10x, 32x is just over the top IMO  Each to their own though...
  66. A

    Super flow!

do you really need need 32x turnove your tank though? I think George with 25x is the max i would go and on the edge of being pointless, IMO 20x is plenty, i only have 10x and my plants are doing great.

    Lily pipe compatability (sp)

by the looks of it i think you just want the dont you  you will need 17mm clear pipe, then get some hose reducers and bring the size down although i have not seen 16mm? Maybe you could heat the pipe so it melts a bit and forms a tight seal.
