    Congo Swamp Monster (750l biotope)

I would advise against hemichromis if you want a community. My pair dug like no tomorrow, were highly aggressive and were actively predatory. I busted the 3" female happily eating adult guppies. The X. nigri on the other hand were peaceful, quite active, kept them with fish as small as...

    Air Driven Filters

Another vote for the superfish. They're probably the quietest internal I've ever used. Aeration via air pump/high surface agitation/filter venturi will ensure all gases (including co2) remain in equilibrium with the atmosphere. There seems to be a couple of schools of thought on this..... No...

    Stainless steel

You forgot the the chrome and nickel ;) The reason stainless doesn't rust is down to the chrome content. When chrome "rusts" it forms a very hard and non reactive chromium oxide layer. It's this property that protects the steel against rusting. The higher the chrome content the more resistant...

    Juwel heliolux

I may be misunderstanding here, apologies if so. The problem is with the manufacturers of the light units themselves not the led industry as a whole. Led chips are produced in batches known as bins, the specs for a led are documented in detail and the bin number will get you the specs. This is...

Are the multilux controllable or just on/off? Replacing burnt out smd leds is doable but not the most straightforward process. Acrylic aquariums

Unfortunately you'd have to disassemble the tank to run it through the machine that bevels/polishes but the machine could easily take a couple of mm (or more as needed) off the each side so you didn't end up with a massive bevel and all sides remain the same height.

You'd need to look into the import laws as I believe there is an approved list of species allowed in and if it's not on the list then no chance, not to mention you will be fined heavily or even imprisoned for breaching them. Eheim Pro 3 - worst Eheim ever?

I'd try plastic cement rather than hot glue, and as suggested silicone grease will be better for the seals. If you can get your hands on dow corning dc4 or equivalent would be good as I've found a lot of the cheaper stuff tends to be very runny

You'll struggle to get enough grip with normal needle nose pliers, if you haven't got vise-grips I'd try a set of normal pliers as they will grip better. If they are directly into the plastic then they should come out fairly easily without wd40, all the wd40 will do is make the screw more...
  70. OllieNZ

Eheim Pro 3 - worst Eheim ever?

You won't drill those out easily. The drill will want to wander off into the plastic, you'd have to use a very short drill and a drill press. There should be just enough sticking out to get a set of needle nose vise-grips on there and wind them out.

    What exactly causes BBA?

Try upping your phosphate dosing a touch, that should take care of the gsa.
  86. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

I don't bother either, syphon into the back garden and fill up straight from the hose. The theory is that unstable co2 = BBA. I'm not sure I agree with this in a low tech tank mainly due the fact the plants aren't adapted to higher co2 so the fluctuation caused by a water change has nil effect...
  87. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

Exactly the above. I know it will be some serious work (been there got the T-Shirt) but bulking it out with some fast growing plants and adding soil will definitely help. I think with the size of the tank and given sufficient plant mass two tubes would be acceptable. This was single t5 no...
  88. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

Just the basics: Size, lighting, filtration, wc schedule, stocking etc. If you're no longer getting new bba growth something you've done must be working. Also an FTS would be nice.
  89. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

I do recall the tank and very nice it was, sorry to hear about the light unit failure:(. How ever I would still suggest that both your tank and Darrel's are med-low light despite the actual intensity being provided due to the use of floating plants and in the case of your led unit the height...
  90. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

First of all please define high light(our opinions may differ). If you can please post par values from your tank. Also I'd like to see some pictures of the tank. (I'm a low tech guy too and love to see others work)
  91. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

They didn't attempt to lower the co2 compensation point, they found the minimum of both light and co2 and increased them from there. I'm not saying high co2 and low light will give you better growth than low co2 and higher light. Their experiment shows it doesn't. They don't state about any...
  92. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

I'll let him answer for himself but from what I've seen he uses alot of floating plants and very thick growth to keep the light levels low for his fish and is accepting of a certain amount of algae.
  93. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

Keyword.... May. Also it seems to suggest it's limited to certain species of plants. Assuming it's possible(I'm not say it isn't), I don't see why this would be a desirable condition to attempt to achieve in the aquarium as it would result in too little wiggle room.
  94. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

Not my understanding of it sorry. Light is always the accelerator, plants have a coping mechanism for dealing with lower levels of co2 and adding more light will just get you closer to the point where the plants won't cope but just before you get there your plants will grow well. Adding co2...
  95. OllieNZ

    What exactly causes BBA?

Not quite correct, addition of co2 lowers the light compensation point of the plants allowing them to grow with less light.
