If you want a pristine sand soil tank then no. Anything else they are great for aeration in substrate.

have you tried dosing your liquid carbon directly to the algae with a syringe and your filter off
iaquatics does a nice suspension kit or allpondsolutions do good price t5 units with legs to sit on aquarium (this is what I use on my 4ft)
