    T8 v T8 LED retrofit v something else

I think I might just go for the replacement for now at those prices. Is there any difference between them other than the brand name stamped on? T8 1 Inch Diameter

I was looking at aquarium specific ones - probably the same thing in branded packaging!

    T8 v T8 LED retrofit v something else

I have a Tropiquarium 55 - it's probably 20 years old. It's got a single 15w T8 tube in and I remember it growing basic stems really well with that. It's currently growing algae - I'm guessing that may be related to the fact that tube (along with the tank) has been sat in a shed 5+ years and the...

Looking for a light for 30L Nano Cube. £50-100…

I'd be inclined to recommend to the Leddy too - maybe see if you can find a second hand one to try and then you'll have only spent £15/20. They aren't super flexible ie. no controller but they are neat looking and designed for that size tank. I really like mine.

whats the tank brand? sometimes if you google the brand and retrofit led or similar you'll find someone that's done it.

    Pond-style Tanks & Window Lighting

I wonder if you could use frosted window film that blocks some of the light so helps with algae issues and would also give you a better view of the fish rather than looking all the way through?

    Fluval Plant 3.0 Hanging Height

What have you used for mounting it? Looks very neat. I have mine on the tank rim, but I think it needs to come up a bit as I tend to get algae growing around the floating plant roots but not further down in the tank.

    Questions for Fluval 3.0 owners

I think shimmer depends on surface movement - if there is good movement you get shimmer - if it's pretty still or lots of floating plants you don't. I would imagine not quite as much as the spot light styles. My tank is 45 wide/tall and with the light resting in the centre on the top rim I get...

Light for 20 inch deep tank. Fluval plant 3.0?

My tank is 18"x18"x36" low tech and the 3.0 sat on the top rim does leave a triangle shadow about 3-4" down/in on the top edge but otherwise has enough spread for the width - would disappear raising it a couple of inches. I only run it at around 30%, so I think it would easily cope with a 20"...

Juwel Helialux Spectrum Vs Fluval Plant 3.0

Not sure about the Jewel controller but the fluval is limited in someways. You can only have one light period and that is ramp up, on, ramp down, off. So can't can't split it if you want it on before and after work, or set a specific colour/length dim period in the evening etc. so do compare...

Underwater Spotlight for Plants in a Shaded Area?

You can get underwater LEDs but they are either big or dim. I would go for the sideways option... although if it's dry start placing it in a sunny location would be easiest sideways light.

    Fluval Plant 3.0 32w

The lights nice, the app is a bit limited. If you just want it to do the options it has - ramp up, light period, ramp down, off - then it's perfect, if you want more customisation for time periods you're stuck.

    Fluval 3.0- any good

Would depend on the height and width of the tank, the spread is 120 degrees.
  18. tam

    Fluval 3.0- any good

I have one and it seems to work great. The only draw back is the lack of customisation in the light periods - you basically have ramp up, day, ramp down, night. You can set the time/duration and colour for those - which is great the app works well, but you can't, for example, have a split light...

    Juwel led dimming and algae

I'd just go for something like: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LZBVUM4/ no need for anything expensive and they give you colour options and brightness - just watch the brand variations as the reviews for some say they lose the settings when switched off. I brought my brother one at Christmas for...

    Juwel led dimming and algae

You could use a low powered LED from the side/back (if there is no room in the hood) set with a timer that comes on before the main light. Not quite the gradual on/off but a very cheap option.

    Juwel led dimming and algae

Does it have a cover you could add some window frosting to? Same idea as people use on the back of the tank - you can get them in various % light blocking/patterns.

Fluval Plant 3.0 - will it fit under Roma LED canopy?

They do sell a mounting kit for use with a hood - there is a video on youtube. I think it mentioned the bracket allows for space above but it looked like it would only create about 5mm clearance. Certainly doesn't hurt to ask them though.

Fluval Plant 3.0 - will it fit under Roma LED canopy?

You're welcome :) That's how I'm planning to use it, over a low tech 90x45x45cm. I'm still waiting on the tank itself to arrive though so I've just held it over another tank/played with the settings so far - which all looks good. I haven't had it running to see how plants grow but no reason...

Fluval Plant 3.0 - will it fit under Roma LED canopy?

Here is the profile. That section on the end is the support bracket which pulls out horizontally. That piece is plastic, so you could probably smash it off reasonably easily to get more clearance but I would guess that will effect the warranty.

How long do lights *need* to be on?

The Fluval looks good doesn't it, I've been considering it recently. The benefit over your current light is you can control the intensity. So you can have it on for a long period with low light or a short period with higher light.
  27. tam

How long do lights *need* to be on?

If it was me, I'd look at reducing the amount of light, rather than shortening the period it's on. Otherwise you are going to end up not being able to look at the tank as the lights are always off! Have you had the frogbit long? As that grows across the surface it will reduce the intensity of...

    Dimming without dimmer

A couple of sticks across it would give you something to balance a sheet of paper or similar on if its not got a cover :) Or you could use clothes pegs to hold something long enough to span the tank by itself.
  29. tam

    Dimming without dimmer

Do you have cover glass under it - just pop a piece of paper or similar underneath on that - I've the back of a sheet of stamps on the top of one of my tanks at the moment, where I thinned out the floaters and trimmed a bit dramatically and wanted to cut the light. Try different materials until...

Anyone had good success with TMC Grobeam 600's?

Sorry, just double checked my controller & instructions, what I've actually got set is ramp up for 4 hours, on for 5 hours at 90% and then ramp down 4 hours. They count ramp up inside the time set, but ramp off is afterwards. Thought that didn't seem like enough hours.

Anyone had good success with TMC Grobeam 600's?

I think so. It's slow and steady, but healthy. I don't have them at the moment, but red root floaters really coloured up nicely under it - you could see the outline of the light bar in the green to red colour change so I don't think they limit growth in any way. No issues with melting. I've a...

Anyone had good success with TMC Grobeam 600's?

I use one over my 70L low tech. I use it with the controller and ramp up and down (4 hours each side) - it hits 90% at the peak but then starts ramping down again. Plus floating plants reduce the light further. Brought a pair and my brother has the other one over his 100L without a controller...

    Moonlight....(Garish)

I prefer dim white light over bright blue too. You'll find you don't actually need a lot of light to make the tank viewable. If you can with your lights, one option is to ramp up/down gradually. So you could have a ramp up in the morning and then start lowering your lights at say 7pm and have...

    Long photoperiod

We do have a fair amount of bog plants, marsh marigold, iris, I think there is forget-met-not in there, primulas, some of it gets started later than others though. I've some hair grass (parvula) in a tray in the green house, that's been growing out all summer. I'm presuming it will survive...

    Long photoperiod

We run a uv filter on our pond in the summer, once switched on you can see it slowly clear from greenish to you can see to the bottom 4' down. I imagine part of the difference is the plant mass. We just have lilies in the main section and they only cover 30% ish. I'm very tempted to try a tank...

Propagators with emersed growth in soil I have on the window sill. Actually I have some dwarf hairgrass in the greenhouse outside I should probably bring in, not sure if it will like winter? I'm guessing jars of water might get algae in sunlight? Anyone grow those on window sills?

LEDDY SMART Aquael plant light - anyone tried these?

It's quite an even spread at that height, the arm length positions the light slightly back from from centre, but the front corners seem as well lit as the back. I can take a current pic if you'd like to see with plants/substrate in.

Not in that hood, but I've mine in an AquaOne hood, I unscrewed what I could and removed the existing electronics (taking a pic first in case I ever want to put them back) then I've just held the grobeam in with a couple of cable ties through existing holes in the metal work. It's tough without...

    LED options

That's really bad customer service. We've had LEDs out on the tmc marine strips, and a duff controller but not had any trouble getting them replaced quickly. Going to the shop you purchased might work better. If you're lucky they'll just swap them for you.

    Upgrading to LED

Hi, I'd like a little advice on lighting. I've an AquaOne 510 (75l 54cm deep) which comes with two 11w PL lights. I was wondering about swapping to LED and looking at the GroBeam 600? Do you think this would make a difference, and would I need one or two? I don't want super high light...
