Has anyone any advice about this. Plants are a week old. 3 wpg. Dosing tropica specialist two squirts per day. 5 hour lighting and up inline diffuser going at about 5 bps. Co2 on 2 hours before lights on and off 1 hour before lights off.

I appear to be getting really good growth, but I don't like the staurogyne loosing colour in the middle of the picture.

Have you just recently planted tank?If the Staurogyne has become a bit pale in colour(transparent/grey)then it is melting. How is your flow in this area of the tank? And colour of drop checker throughout your lighting period?Cheers Mark

I saw in your 1st post they are a week old.I had an up and down start myself with this plant and have to say that it does bounce back well when established,so would give it a bit more time.I had a problem with my Staurogyne that under direct light was melting and not under direct light were super healthy. After slightly changing the flow and increasing the co2 the melting plants recovered in no time. But would give it a bit of time the plants were probably used to be out of the water.Cheers Mark

I think that's a good idea.A change of flow might be the game changer! The plants under the direct light need a very good co2 supply. If you have no melt on other Staurogyne or indeed other plants in different areas of the tank you have the answer.Cheers Mark

The drop checker starts off dark green and is yellowie green by the time the lights go out.
Just before lights out. 6.5 hours of co2. 5 hour lighting period.

Hi Planty,
id guess c02 deficiency, it also looks to me like the plants are melting.
Ideally you want your dc to show the above colour at lights on and maintain it throughout the photoperiod. Dark green dc at lights on could be illustrating a c02 shortfall at the most important time for the plants.
Plants are a week old. 3 wpg.
is that .3wpg or 3wpg? if its 3wpg then you may need to reduce lighting intensity also.
Cheerio,
Ady.

OK, well I am guessing that you have twin T5s?
5bps sounds like a lot but it depends on your bubble counter, if you have healthy shrimps there cant be to much gas going in!
The best solution would be to remove the livestock & turn up the gas, if that is not to your liking than reduce the light, or increase the light unit height above the tank.

I think the problem I have with the gas is that there is about 20cm of pipe after the up atomiser before the bubbles are in the aquarium. I can't change that because the aquarium is on a low slung cabinet.

The aquarium is very misty when the co2 is on, so I don't think the co2 is getting enough contact time before it floats up. I have dulled down the lighting by adding some white Perspex, which has decreased the lighting.

I'm thinking I might put the atomiser before the filter, so it gets more contact time with water before it's expelled in to the aquarium.

UPs do add a lot of mist, that is supposed to be the most efferent method for the plants to absorb the gas!
20cm of pipe will have no detrimental effect in fact that is a lot shorted than most peoples set up would be.
It can be a very frustrating game, getting the perfect combination of light, Co2 & happy fish.... keep on top of it with small changes, you will get there in the end.

I've just got home. It's like autumn in the aquarium. Stauro leaves everywhere. Luckily though, the drop checker is yellow with a 3 hour gas run before lights on. Everything else is growing so well.

To attack the dead spot I have received a new spray bar that I will run back to front. That should tackle that issue. Courtesy of gush.

They were probably on the way out.But I have seen this with Staurogyne repens and there is every chance if you have altered the conditions they will grow back perfectly. When they start to melt the leaves are lost but just stick with it and monitor the Co2 delivery.Cheers Mark
