I went snorkelling off the coast of Scotland last weekend and saw some amazing algae, I was quite stunned at how much life and variations in colour and texture there was in 6 inches of water! So many hermit crabs and an fish!

My question is has anyone setup a cold water macro algae tank? And would it be possible using just two external filters?

I took a video too so once it gets uploaded I'll link it for everyone to see. Think I might rip my scape down and give it a go!

No one have any input?

Re: British Macro-algae tank

Marine nano's are pretty common, marine algae tanks less so, and british marcos are essentially unheard of! I imagine the barr report to be your first port of call, the main issue however will be keeping the tank cool enough!

Re: British Macro-algae tank

Hi johno, cold water reef tanks are stating to catch on around the world now but still pretty much a specialist hobby.

Lots of things to consider but the main issue is temperature, you would need to operate a chiller of some description.

This is not quite as straightforward as it might sound either as the heat exchanging chiller is best sited outside the house to work at its most efficient capacity.
You have to bear in mind we are talking about running a tank around your locale sea temperatures not just stopping a tank from overheating tropical temperatures.

You would need to think about double glazing your tank to as the front glass will be prone to condensation.

If you are still serious about setting up a cold water marine tank I can give plenty of advice.......

Sounds great man keep us updated.

Ive been thinking the same thing. Ive moved to just under the forth bridge so im planning a 1 gallon bowl with just algea snails and perhaps a small hermit later on.

Big plus is free water haha

Are you near the cost ?
Cheers

Re: British Macro-algae tank

thanks for the input guys, I was considering condensation as that would be the main concern, I was thinking about using a Beer Fridge and running the outlet of the filter thought it to cool the tank.

Would love to look into Freediving Foxfish, pity im so bad at holding my breath!

Re: British Macro-algae tank

Beer coolers are ok short term but the stainless steel pipe inside the units soon corrode with the salt water - you really need a chiller with titanium pipe work inside.
However I started out with beer chillers, some last longer than others !

Video Uploaded.

Can someone confirm it works? Mate uploaded it to facebook :/

Bah not sure how i can link to it on FB and get it working

OK try that :/ lower quality but im sure you get the jist!

Great video. Really enjoyed it. I'd love to explore an area like that.
There's definetly something appealing about setting up a native marine tank. Chiller does seem to be a key part though.

Yeah i just wished I could have got it in focus more as it was amazing, fish and crabs everywhere! theres usualy seals too but not that day :(

very cool. I think George did a micro algae tank for PFK as his attempt as aquascaping a marine tank. was "normal" marines thou if i remember right.

Best Regards,
John
