Come on, mister, if you want to grow plants, get some plants in the tank! Fill up all that empty space with a keen growing plant, perhaps Hygrophilia polsperma? Keep whacking in the ferts at at least the recommended doses, make sure you've got plenty of co2, change 50% of the water per week...

Topping up with ro would be ideal. Topping up with tap (or whatever you use to fill the tank) shouldn't do any damage if you are doing a 50% change weekly. Vinegar on a kitchen towel will also get rid of the limescale - I use it for the acrylic lens of my Arcadia luminaire. I think your tank is...

Do you mean you thought they ate plants? Angelfish are carnivores, they eat invertebrates and fish. So they're very plant safe. The rivers they come from generally don't contain plants, and they're not evolved to eat them. They will eat any animal that's small enough for them to do so though...
