Frogbit leaves turning brown and mushy?

Hi,

I am having trouble with my Amazon frogbit. I’ve had it just under 2 weeks and it was doing amazing, growing loads and I had nearly double the pot (Tropica) it came in. Now it is browning, leaves turning mushy and I’ve removed these leaves and I’m left with less than the original pot, and continuing to still brown.

I have a Fluval light, dose Tropica ferts in my 50% weekly water change, temperature at 26°C, very low flow as they are restricted into the corner by a feeding ring to prevent them getting blown about, and no lid on the tank.

What am I doing wrong?!

Hi, Thankyou!

I am dosing both specialised and premium... think that’s their names? The green and brown ones!

Can you upload a picture here so we can get a better look at what’s going on.

If you have a fish bio load in the Tank just use the Brown Tropica, maybe use the Green once a week if the bio load is low. If there is no fish bio load then dose the Green. You don’t need to be doing both at the same time (unless you are mixing using reduced doses between the two to reach the target for one set of bottle dosing instructions).

:)

Hi @cathrynov

Firstly, welcome to UKAPS!

Secondly, your Frogbit. Which Tropica ferts are you using?

Hi, hope this photo helps.
Oh Thankyou, that’s really helpful. I’m just not sure what I’m doing wrong! Could it be because I don’t have fish in there? Is it just going through transitional melt?

Hi
Unfortunately, you need to remove them as they are beyond saving!
Looks as though there is some sort of trailing root infection.
Darrel may be able to help diagnose what's causing the dieback.

Yeah to be honest, I had sort of admitted defeat, I have been removing the brown leaves each day but like you say it’s got to the point of being past saving. Sometimes this hobby is difficult, spending all this money on plants just for them to die.

feeling very disheartened!

Yes, it can be like that at times!
We all go through certain fails, so don't get too disheartened!
A couple of weeks ago we had a cold snap of weather....that could have compromised the Frogbit!

For whatever reason and your throwing it why not try tissue culture Salvinia auriculata it should spread pretty quick and soon lets you know if its a nutrient issue

In the background, which plant is this, is it a Variegated type, did you get the plant like this or is this growth in the tank while you have kept it.

If it’s not variegated and this is in tank growth it appears to be suffering from a major Iron deficiency.

I am going to assume Variegated.

:)

Following this thread. I had this happen to me once too, with all the other stem plants still growling nicely with red colours and all
