Where to buy in Wales.

Posted: 07 Jul 2007 10:18 am Post subject: Rhyl Aquaria
Shop Name: Rhyl Aquaria.

Location: Abbey Street, Rhyl.

Directions: Just off the promenade, towards the western end.

Specialise in: Nothing in particular, but when I visit they usually have some nice rasbora, Boraras etc. species, great for nanos.

Overall Verdict: The guy who runs the shop has never heard of EI et al, but has very nice planted tanks and nanos on display, and seems to know his plants pretty well.

Anywhere good near Cardiff & Bridgend? I'm going there this weekend.
Maidenhead Aquatics are on the main industrial estate just behind the Police Headquarters in Bridgend.

HC, Glosso, etc. 5 pots for £10.

Aquatics-Online are located in Bridgend, on Brackla inductrial estate. They don't have anything to display though... except for lots of wild rats.

Leeks of Llantrisant used to have an amazing selection of everything, but when I went there two weeks ago it was a dive :(

Maidenhead Cardiff are meant to be good, but I've never been there.

The Cardiff store is absolutely HUGE! Far and away the biggest LFS I've ever been to (about 7000sq.ft indoors i believe). They do have a decent selection of plants, and a nice planted display tank also
Mill Aquatics in Swansea (where I currently work) also have a good variety of very healthy looking fish that are very reasonably priced, not so hot on the plants tho

Aqua Tech

109 New Road, Porthcawl, CF36 5DD, Tel: 01656 784646

Aqua Tech is a small business run by one person, who is extremely knowledgeable (although not so much on planted tanks). There is a good selection of 'bread and butter' fish which are always in good health and at a good price with the odd oddball :D and marines. There is also an excellent selection of dry goods at extremely good prices, although the planted tank is not really catered for.

Overall, a lovely place to visit if you're passing, and willing to spend a few hours chatting. (The fish and chip shop down the road has also won Best Regional Fish & Chip Shop, and the beach offers a lovely view :D)

I always thought Aquatech was marine only. Its certainly a marine specialising shop

It's not marine only but there is a good selection of marine fish and he will order fish in aswell. There's more freshwater tanks than marines though.

Maidenhead aquatics,
Wyevale garden centre,
Siemens way,
Swansea enterprise park,
Llansamlet.

Recently visited for the first time - small , but very enthusiastic work force. Three small'ish but nicely presented planted tanks. Made the most of the small space they've got.

tht is a better one IMO, the one in wyvale was rather cramped when I was there, so now I only go to that one. last time I went they had 1 large cascade type tank full of plants, and at least 1 planted tank set up.

I went to both the same day - Pontardulais was MUCH bigger but didn't seem as well kept or have as many planted tanks as Llansamlet - I felt they didn't make the most of the huge space they had !! :(

they do have a much bigger selection of bogwood however.

I'll have to wonder down there to see what the other Swansea one is like. they had a few rays there when I went last time.

hopefully I'll be headed up to the green Machine in the not to distant future.

Maidenhead Aquatics at Pugh's Garden Centre, Morganstown, Cardiff.

Worth a visit just to see their mega-sized Marine 'Swimming Pool' which you can view from the sides and top - via a viewing station :)

Also various set-ups Planted, Mbuna, Goldfish.... I loved their Piranha tank complete with skeleton
always a good stock of fish, plants (on the right day - they seem to sell really quickly!) and enthusiastic staff.

This shop is moving. Not very far, in the same compound but bigger and better I am told. When I visited on Sunday 12th December 2010 they were part way through so should be done by now.

The shop in Bridgend (Industrial Estate) is also good but smaller. Very helpful staff I found, clean and tidy tanks, no fish problems.

Hi does anyone know of any decent places down Pembrokeshire /Carmarthen way please.

Hi all,
There is a new aquatic shop opening in Newport, "Newport Aquatics", they are opening on 22nd September 2018, and will have an aquascaping room. The owner used to be the MD of the <"Aquatic Store"> in Bristol, so he understands the business.

So that's where Steve went! I wondered why he had disappeared lol.

I think he has been over in Newport for 18 months. He was selling fish from home via Facebook, but must think there is enough trade to make a shop viable.

Particularly once the toll is off the Severn Bridge I expect a few ex-customers will make their way over from Bristol.

cheers Darrel
